Kline named new AD at Southern Door

Southern Door School District has announced the appointment of Ben Kline as the new Athletic Director, effective July 1, 2024. Kline has ten years of teaching experience, with the first five years of his career spent teaching in Massachusetts and the last five years at Southern Door, where he has been teaching Physical Education and Health classes.

Kline has coaching experience with three years of varsity head coach of boys’ lacrosse at St. Joseph Central High School in Massachusetts.  He also has 10 years of varsity football coaching experience at various high schools, including St. Joseph Central High School, Pittsfield High School, and Southern Door High School.  He served as the head coach at St. Joseph Central during the 2013 season.

Most recently, at Southern Door, he acted as the interim head coach during the 2021 season and coached for three seasons as the JV/JV2 basketball coach and two seasons as the middle school track coach.

Kline said, “I am excited for the opportunity to serve as Southern Door’s Athletic Director. We have an incredible group of student-athletes and coaches at Southern Door. As an Athletic Director, my goal is to provide them with the support they need to reach their goals, not just athletically but also in the classroom and the community.”

High School Principal Steve Bousley said, “We are excited to tap into Ben’s skillset, and are looking forward to his leadership in this role. He has experience as a coach, teacher, and leader, and I believe he will do a great job supporting our student-athletes and coaches, as well as positively representing the Southern Door athletic program.”

Kline will replace Mark Jonas, who will leave Southern Door at the end of the school year for Preble, becoming the Hornets’ new football coach next fall.

Southern Door's Season Ends on Road to Crusaders 73-29 on U102.1

The Southern Door Eagles girls' tournament run ended on the road Friday night at the hands of the Sheboygan Lutheran Crusaders.  The Eagles offense couldn't get things going at first as the Crusaders press and inside height gave them the early advantage that would prove impossible to overcome.

It would take just over 5 minutes for the Eagles to score their first point, which came via a free throw.  Leading the way in scoring for the Eagles was Payton Gilbertson who finished the game with 14, followed by Isabella Price with 8. Makenna Geyer, Ashlyn Delfosse, and Sophia Counard would all contribute to the score column as well.

The Crusaders had a player hit a milestone that Southern Door fans have seen fairly recently as Sheboygan Lutheran player Alex Stricker would score her 100th point midway through the second half.

Basketball season for the school is not officially over yet as the boys will open their 2024 tournament run next week Friday against either Oconto or Peshtigo.

Veeser won her quarterfinal match before losing in the semifinals to Lomira's Kara Kuge. Nora LeFevre and Sydney Turner both went 1-2 in their second day of action, falling in the second round of the consolation bracket.

Eagles girls visit Sheboygan Lutheran Friday on U-102.1

The Southern Door girls basketball team will try to keep the road wins coming when they head to Sheboygan Lutheran Friday night.

The road trip did not bother the Souther Door Eagles as they traveled to New Holstein and came home with a 47-41 victory Tuesday night. The Eagles fended off a late surge when a pair of 3-pointers by the Huskies Alyssa Schneider made it a single-possession game at one point.  Clutch free throws by Isabella Price and Sophia Counard would tip things back in the Eagles' favor. Leading the scoring for the Eagles was Isabella Price, who had 19, including going 9 of 13 from the free throw line, followed by Ashlyn Delfosse, who added 18 points.

The Crusaders had a bye in the first round but still entered the tournament winners of six of their last eight games en route to a 19-5 record. Taylor Brigham, Alex Stricker, and Addy Verhagen all average approximately 14 points per game, with Stricker approaching double-double territory with nine rebounds per game.

Jacob Nate and Matt Malvitz will have the action from Sheboygan Friday night on U-102.1 and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the opening tip at 7 p.m.

Eagles boys survive to keep perfect Packerland record

The Southern Door Eagles had to fight hard to stay perfect in the Packerland Conference on the final day of the regular season, edging Oconto 76-74.

The game featured two of the conference's most dangerous scorers, the Eagles' Drew Daoust and the Blue Devils' Carter Koch. Both players scored approximately half of their team's points in the opening period, leaving the Eagles up 42-40 at the break. The Eagles would hold onto that advantage in the second half, with Daoust piling up 39 points in the victory. Tyler Neinas complemented Daoust with 19 points in the game, including 14 in the first half. The Eagles also got 10 points from Caden Pierre. In addition to Koch's 29 points, Trenton Hartmann and Daniel Alwin poured in 14 points a piece in the loss for the Blue Devils.

Southern Door girls stay alive in state tournament

Mason Motquin's time in Madison may be over, but Southern Door is still alive in this weekend's WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament.

Hailey Veeser won both of her matches to earn a spot in the semifinal round of the Girls 152 lb. bracket. Veeser will wrestle again on Friday night. Teammates Nora LeFevre and Sydney Turner both registered pins in the first round before they were pinned in the second round. They will wrestle again on Friday morning.

Southern Door outlasts New Holstein on U102.1

The road trip did not seem to bother the Souther Door Eagles as they traveled to New Holstein and came home with a 47-41 victory Tuesday night.  Southern Door would use the absence of one of New Holsteins star players and some impressive defense to capture the victory and advance one game further in the 2024 WIAA Basketball Tournament.

The Eagles fended off a late surge when a pair of 3-pointers by the Huskies Alyssa Schneider made it a single-possession game at one point.  Clutch free throws by both Isabella Price and Sophia Counard would tip things back into the Eagles' favor. Leading the scoring for the Eagles was Isabella Price, who had 19, including going 9 of 13 from the free throw line, followed by Ashlyn Delfosse, who added 18 points.

The Eagles once again hit the road as a Round 2 matchup with #2 seed Sheboygan Lutheran awaits them Friday night, with a 7 pm tipoff and pregame at 6:45 p.m. on U102.1 and streamed on the New Radio Sports Network.

Jonas takes over reins at Green Bay Preble

Just a few weeks after his position as Southern Door Athletic Director was posted online in search of candidates, Mark Jonas found a new job.

Green Bay Preble announced on Tuesday that Jonas would continue his hall-of-fame career at the school after stops at Southern Door, Kaukauna, Oconomowoc, and Hilbert. Jonas led the Eagles to a 20-3 record in his two years on the job, helping his team get to Level 2 of the WIAA Playoffs both seasons.

Southern Door girls open WIAA play at New Holstein on U-102.1

The Southern Door Eagles will head south to New Holstein to take on the Huskies in their WIAA opener.

The tenth-seeded Eagles enter tournament play with an 8-16 mark and a three-game losing streak. They last won on February 6th against Gibraltar, part of a stretch when they won three of their four games. Payton Gilbertson leads the team in scoring with 13.5 ppg while Isabella Price is flirting with a double-double each game with 9.8 ppg and 8.1 rpg.

The Huskies are singling a similar tune to the Eagles as they enter tournament play with a 7-17 mark and a three-game losing streak. They ended their season with a 47-32 loss to Brillion. They are led by Payton Grenzer, who also nearly averages a double-double with 13.6 ppg and 9.4 rpg.

Jacob Nate and Matt Malvitz will have the call on U-102.1 and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the opening tip at 7 p.m.

Eagles boys burns Blazers

The Southern Door Eagles tightened its grip on the Packerland Conference with a 72-52 win over NEW Lutheran Monday night.

The Eagles made the Blazers chase them the whole night, taking a 35-27 lead into the locker room, and only extended that lead more in the second half.

Drew Daoust turned in another vintage performance, scoring 34 points with three three-points and a pair of "and-1s." Caden Pierre knocked down a trio of shots from behind the arc to complement Daoust with 17 points while Matthew Malvitz added six points, and Will Jandrin chipped in another five points. Griffin Steffel scored 21 points and Reid Nelson registered 11 points in the loss for the Blazers.

The Eagles will play at Oconto on Thursday.

Coach reflects on record-breaking day for Southern Door wrestling

Congratulations to Nora LeFevre, Sydney Turner, Hailey Veeser, and Mason Motquin!  Each of the girls won their sectional brackets, and Mason placed third.  All four advanced to the state tournament, which starts this Thursday at the Kohl Center in Madison.  Girls' round #1 starts at 3:00 and boys at 7:00.

For the boys, Mason started the the day with a hard-fought takedown in his first match to get an early 2-0 lead.  After some hard riding and hand fighting, he went into the third period up 3-2 and feeling good with choice of starting position.  Shepard chose to give Mason the escape and a 4-2 lead.  Mason then lost the takedown and gave up a controversial stalling point with only a few seconds left, resulting in a very tough 5-4 loss.  From there he needed a Shepard win to get back in the bracket and have a shot to advance.  Fortunately, Shepard advanced to the final giving Mason a wrestleback chance.  As expected, nothing comes easy at sectionals.  Mason was doing well against Heimke from Lena but then gave up a 5-pointer to close the second period and lose the lead.  In the third, Mason came back and retook the lead, riding out Heimke to end the match, winning 7-6.  In the third-place match, Mason lost the first takedown but quickly escaped.  He then earned a couple of takedowns and a 6-4 lead with only 15 seconds left.  For the final 15 seconds, Mason smartly defended, giving up a stalling point to make the final score 6-5.  Despite all three of his matches being decided by 1 point, Mason controlled the majority of each match.  He was in on single legs all day and finishing well.  We had hoped for a rematch with Carpenter from Oshkosh, but that will have to wait another week.

At state, Mason will start Thursday night against Gabe Gerber from Ladysmith.  Gerber is a 44-6 sophomore who won the Edgar Sectional.  The state brackets are now seeded, so the sectional champions are no longer guaranteed a first-round bye.  On paper, I like the draw and Mason's placement on the bracket.

The girls got started after the boys ' finals, and the SD girls didn't disappoint.  Hailey and Kailyn had byes, while Nora, Sydney, and Attyson all earned first-period pins to advance all five girls into the finals.

In the final, Nora faced Lexi Riehl from Shiocton, who was also ranked.  The two had battled earlier in the year, where Nora earned a fall late in the third period.  Nora was in control from the start, but the match was very close until the third period when Nora again showed her mat wrestling skills and earned the fall.  For Nora this is her second state berth in as many attempts.  Nora will be ready this season after not placing at state last year.  She is seeded #3 and will face Maya Kirchner, a 26-10 sophomore from Hartford Union.

Sydney faced Parker Zahn from Gillett Suring in the finals.  Zahn was a state qualifier at 145 last season, but that didn't slow Sydney down.  She came in strong with her ties and a nice firemans leading to a first period fall.  Sydney has been wrestling better and better each week and is peaking at the right time.  Sydney is seeded #11 and will face 24-3 sophomore Kylee Kurszewski from Neenah.

Hailey faced Miriam Alberts from Lena in the finals.  This was a rematch from earlier this year as well.  This time, Alberts was more prepared and worked hard to stay in neutral, avoiding Hailey's mat skills.  Hailey worked her technique, trying a few different shots and pinning techniques in the first two periods, earning a fall in the third period with a very nice power half.  Hailey was our top state finisher last year despite starting the season late.  She finished fourth at state last year and will look to improve next week.  She is seeded #3 and will face Hannah Behrndt, an 8-3 sophomore from Hamilton, in the first round.

For the wrestlers that work so hard and come so close but don't qualify, it is always a difficult end.  For some, it's the end of a career and the end of a dream.  For others, it's a realization of what they can do and hopes for a bright future.  Hopefully, all will recollect with fond memories the hard work they put in and the camaraderie they shared with coaches and teammates.

Trevor Englebert faced Jordan Jahnke from Shioctin for the second time this year.  Trevor started with a flurry this time and jumped to an early lead, almost earning the fall.  Still leading going into the third, things looked good, but Jahnke had other ideas.  Trevor gave up some crucial near-falls in the third period and couldn't climb back.  Jahnke lost his next match, which eliminated Trevor from the tournament.  Jahnke then continued to wrestle back and finish in second place.  For Trevor, this was the end of his wrestling career.  He was a two-time sectional qualifier, falling just short of state trips this year and his sophomore season.  After a crazy freshman COVID year and some injuries along the way, Trevor still managed to earn over 100 wins.  He had a good year, and we wish him the best.

Lance Veeser faced Colin Fischer from Bonduel in the first round.  Lance worked hard and kept the match close at 6-1 in the third period.  In the third period, Lance was taking more chances, hoping to find something, but gave up a near fall to make the final 9-1.  Fischer then lost his next match, eliminating Lance, before earning a tech fall, then a fall to place third.  It was great for Lance to compete with the best and see that he is right there.  He has a bright future if he continues improving like he did this year.

Attyson faced Alisha Berg in the finals.  Attyson gave it her best, but Berg has the experience.  During Attyson's first year in wrestling, she learned a lot and improved steadily.  She is a great person, very coachable, and a competitor.  We look forward to having her back next season.

Kailyn faced Mercedes Kohlmann in the final.  Unfortunately, Kailyn lacks experience and got rolled in the second period.  Kailyn also just started this season and has many natural abilities and potential.  I hope she will be back to keep us laughing and on our toes next season.

Thanks

Coach Englebert

Southern Door Eagles fly past Kewaunee Storm, 82-61 on U-102.1

The Southern Door Eagles earned a share of the Packerland Conference Championship Friday night, where they faced Kewaunee and emerged victorious, 82-61.

Southern Door’s Drew Daoust had 32 points in the contest. Even though  Daoust only had five second-half points, the team rallied from behind the arc, shooting above 50% in the contest.

Thomas Stangel led the Storm with 21 points, followed by Braxton Riha, who had 20 in the contest.

The Eagles still have two conference games against NEW Lutheran Monday and Oconto.

The Storm battle Algoma on Tuesday.

Southern Door boys look to put final stamp on conference title vs. Kewaunee on U-102.1 Friday

The Southern Door boys' basketball team could ensure their Packerland Conference title streak stays intact with a win versus Kewaunee on Friday night.

In their last game, strength, speed, and length were used against the Gibraltar Vikings as the Eagles led wire-to-wire in a 79-51 victory. The Eagles jumped out to a fast start, partly thanks to Caden Pierre knocking down three quick shots from the outside, buying time for Drew Daoust to heat up after a cold start. Daoust was able to penetrate the Vikings' interior defense late in the period, scoring 17 of his game-high 27 points in the first half. Pierre registered 11 first-half points and Lauden Berg collected nine of his 14 points in the frame to help the Eagles enter the locker room with a 53-22 halftime lead. Following the win, head coach Josh Vandenbush talked about the importance of their matchup against Kewaunee.

The Storm's Thomas Stangel scored 24 points while Avery Jerabek and Connor Kilgore each scored 16 points as they routed Sevastopol 82-34 on Tuesday. Their lone Packerland Conference loss came against the Eagles in December. No other conference team is within four games of the Storm, making them the best chance to at least force the Eagles to share the title.

Matt Malvitz and Reece Robillard will have the call on U-102.1 and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com from Brussels beginning at 7:15 p.m., with the pregame show followed by the opening tip at 7:30 p.m.

Eagles girls can't slow down Blue Devils in regular season finale

The Southern Door Eagles girls' basketball faced a motivated Oconto squad on Thursday, dropping the contest 58-40 at home.

The Blue Devils entered the night with an outside chance at a share of the Packerland Conference title but needed Kewaunee and Sevastopol to lose their games to accomplish the feat. Addisyn Viestenz did her part to keep the Blue Devils in the conversation, scoring 18 points in the win over the Eagles. The also had six other players register at least six points.

Eagles boys soar past Vikings on 105.1 The GOAT

Strength, speed, and length were used against the Gibraltar Vikings as the Southern Door boys' basketball team led wire-to-wire in a 79-51 victory.

The Eagles jumped out to a fast start, partly thanks to Caden Pierre knocking down three quick shots from the outside, buying time for Drew Daoust to heat up after a cold start. Will Lecy, Liam Lindenberg, and Marshall Maltby hit their three-point shots to keep the game within single digits until midway through the half.

The Eagles tightened their grip on the game early in the second half with Daoust knocking down a pair of threes and Matthew Malvitz keeping possessions alive with multiple rebounds. The Vikings were also challenged by the Eagles' 1-3-1, which forced long and high passes that ended in turnovers.

Braden Sitte was able to finally crack the Eagles' code in the second half, finishing off the drives to the hoop with baskets or trips to the free throw line where he was a perfect 8-8. Sitte ended his evening with 20 points, with Maltby adding 10 points, Lecy chipping in with nine, and Lindenberg pouring in eight. In addition to Pierre and Berg, Daoust's night was complemented by 10 points from Malvitz in the Eagles' victory.

The Eagles will take on the Storm this Friday night with the Packerland Conference title on the line.

The Vikings will look for its second straight home win and a return to the victory column on Friday when they host Sturgeon Bay. That game will be featured on 105.1 The GOAT and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 7:15 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the opening tip at 7:30 p.m.

Englebert reflects on Southern Door Wrestling's Regional performances

Congratulations to Mason Motquin, Trevor Englebert, and Lance Veeser.  All three qualified for next week's sectional tournament by placing in the top four at yesterday's D3 Regional tournament at Cedar Grove.  Mason and Trevor both finished second, and Lance third.  On the day, Trevor also earned his 100th career win.  A great milestone for him.

At 132, Mason started with a bye, followed by a quick pin.  In the semi-final, it was a second-period pin.   Mason took his time with an unfamiliar opponent just back from injury.  In the finals, Mason wrestled well against Carpenter from Oshkosh Lourdes.  After losing the takedown, Mason quickly earned a reversal and rode Carpenter for the rest of the first period.  In the second, Carpenter caught Mason and earned the fall.  Carpenter's only two losses the season were at 138, and he placed second in last year's state tournament at 126.  Mason beat Race from Cedar Grove for the second time in the wrestle back this season.  Mason controlled the match from start to finish, earning a 7-2 decision.  Next week, Mason will start with senior Brady Shepard (Waubeno Laona Three Lakes), who is 37-10 and finished third in the Crandon Regional.

At 144, Trevor also received a bye in the first round.  In the second round, Trevor did not wrestle his best but was good enough to earn an 8-3 decision and advance.  In the semi-final, Trevor lost to the eventual champion, Schacht from Mishicot. This was one of those matches where I think Trevor would agree he lost focus and was never really in the match.  He could have done much better.  In the third-place match, Trevor bounced back getting a first-period fall and a shot for a wrestle back for second.  To our surprise, Kelly from Oostburg defaulted due to a sore shoulder, conceding the spot to Trevor.  Next week, Trevor will start with junior Jordan Jahnke (Shiocton) 38-6.  This will be a rematch of a very close match Trevor lost 4-0 at Oshkosh.

At 150, Lance followed Mason's lead with a bye and a quick pin.  Unfortunately, in the semi-final, Lance lost to the eventual champion, Stone Pomeroy from Random Lake.  Pomeroy placed at last year's state tournament, which was too much for Lance today.  Lance bounced right back in the third-place match, looking very good getting a first-period pin.  Lance aggregated a knee injury in his wrestle back for second, so we chose to default the match and try to heal up for next week, leaving him in third.  Next week, Lance will start with junior Colin Fischer (Bonduel) 29-7.

Ethan Alexander wrestled well but came up short despite getting three wins, and Spencer Slezewski went 2-2 on the day.

We went into regionals a few wrestlers short due to injuries to sophomore Trevin Veeser, junior Wyatt Wilke, and senior Hayden Jeanquart.  Hayden qualified for sectionals last year and ended with 97 career wins.  Other seniors ending their careers this week were four-year wrestlers Spencer Slezewski and Thomas Jackson, along with newcomers Joe McDonald, Jonathan Alas and Joshua Nachtwey.  It was my privilege to coach all of these seniors, and it was fantastic having the newcomers help the team this year.

Next week, Saturday, the sectional tournament will be hosted by Bonduel but held at Shawano.  In addition to Mason, Trevor, and Lance, the girls will wrestle as well.  For the boys, the top three placers qualify for state.  For the girls, only the champion advances.  We'll look to fix a few small things this week but mainly stay fresh and healthy.

Thanks

Coach Englebert

Eagles girls battle the Storm on U-102.1 Friday

The Southern Door Eagles girls' basketball team will try to continue their winning ways while keeping down a motivated Kewaunee Storm squad on Friday night in Brussels.

The Eagles are coming off a 56-48 victory over the Gibraltar Vikings earlier this week. Payton Gilbertson scored 15 points, Sophia Counard added 14, and Ashlyn Delfosse scored 10 in the win. The score was 29-19 at halftime, and the Eagles managed to hang on for the win. It was their third straight Packerland Conference victory.

In a back-and-forth battle between two Packerland Conference’s top teams, the Sevastopol Pioneers edged out the Storm 38-33 on Monday. Kewaunee’s leading scorer, guard Jade Kroll, was held scoreless in the first, came out with two early 3s, and led the Storm to take the lead back.  Kewaunee would lead by as much as 5 in the second half, led by Demmin and Kroll, who would finish the game with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Henry Annen and Reece Robillard will have the call from Brussels on U-102.1 beginning at 7:15 p.m., with the pregame show followed by the tip-off at 7:30 p.m.

Individual Milestone and Eagle Victory on U-102.1

It may have been an Algoma home game, but the Southern Door fan base traveled well to support Junior Drew Daoust and his quest for 2000 points.  Fans were treated to that 2000-point milestone and a 66-45 Southern Door victory.

It would take Drew nearly nine minutes to reach his newest milestone, but after a short standing ovation from both Southern Door and Algoma fans, he would continue to put on the type of show that got him and his Eagle teammates to this point.  Daoust would be the night's leading scorer, putting 35 points on the board.  Mathew Malvitz would contribute many rebounds and added 12 points of his own.

On the Algoma side, Parker Lischka would struggle in the first half, scoring just two points, but would go on a streak in the second half, ending his night with 19 total points, which led the way for the Wolves.  Grant Vanvdervest and Chase Romdenne would each add 7.

Each team awaits their next games on Tuesday night as the Wolves look to get back in the win column when they travel to Sturgeon Bay and Southern Door continues their quest for the Packerland conference title as they play host to Gibraltar.

Daoust goes for 2,000 points as Eagles boys face Algoma on U-102.1 Thursday

Drew Daoust is expected to build on his Door County and Packerland Conference scoring records while crossing the 2,000-point barrier on Thursday when Southern Door travels to Algoma Thursday night.

The Eagles staved off a Sturgeon Bay upset earlier in the week, winning the game 74-66. The Eagles entered the locker room with a 35-22 lead over their crosstown rivals, thanks to Drew Daoust scoring 21 of his game-high 42 points in the first half. The Eagles got 12 points from Caden Pierre, eight points from Tyler Neinas, and six from Matthew Malvitz. He is only seven points away from crossing the 2,000-point barrier.

It was a tale of two halves for the Wolves in Algoma last Friday, with the hometown team falling short against Peshtigo in a 45-42 loss. The Wolves outscored the Bulldogs 28-16 in the first half and had the favor returned to them when they were outscored 29-14 after the break. A big reason for the split was Parker Lischka, who scored 18 points in the first half thanks to four three-pointers. The Bulldogs' defense turned their focus to the Wolves star, who scored seven of his remaining nine points at the line to end his night with 27 points. The Wolves only made three shots from the field in the second half. Chase Romdenne scored seven points, and Grant Vandevest contributed five points.

Jacob Nate and Reece Robillard will have the call on U-102.1 beginning at 7:15 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the opening tip at 7:30 p.m.

Southern Door Eagles fly by Lady Vikings

The Southern Door Eagle girls won in Packerland Conference action Tuesday with a 56-48 victory over the Gibraltar Vikings. Payton Gilbertson scored 15 points, while Sophia Counard added 14 and Ashlyn Delfosse chipped in 10 points in the win. Score was 29-19 at halftime and the Eagles managed to hang on for the win.

Gibraltar, who outscored the Eagles 29-27 in the second half, was led by Mikala Gorham and Andie Schar with 15 points, respectively.

The Eagles are now 8-13 and 6-7 in the conference.  The Vikings are now 7-13 overall and 4-10 in the Packerland.

Eagles boys outlast Clippers

The Southern Door Eagles boys' basketball team used a big lead at the break to stave off a Sturgeon Bay upset, winning the game 74-66.

The Eagles entered the locker room with a 35-22 lead over their crosstown rivals, thanks to Drew Daoust scoring 21 of his game-high 42 points in the first half. The Clippers would battle back in the second half, outscoring the Eagles by five points and even making it a one-possession game before their visitors could salt the game away in the end. Calvin Richard helped lead the comeback with 15 of his team-high 22 points in the second half.

The Eagles got 12 points from Caden Pierre, eight points from Tyler Neinas, and six from Matthew Malvitz, while the Clippers countered with 12 points from Danny Lodl and 10 points from Garrett Ulberg.

The 42 points from Daoust leaves him all alone at the top of the Packerland Conference scoring list and seven points away from the 2,000-point milestone.

Coach looks ahead to wrestling postseason

On Saturday, our girls competed in the Green Bay Preble Girls Tournament.  This will be the last regular season action for the girls.  Unfortunately, most of our team was sick or had other commitments, but that didn't stop the girls who could make it.

Sydney Turner and Hailey Veeser both finished in second place.  Not where they wanted to finish but good experience for both of them.

Hailey earned two falls and quickly made the finals, facing Tiani LeMieux from Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol.  With one match already going in each girl's favor this season, we expected a great match.  Hailey gave up a takedown, but with a quick escape, she was back on her feet.  Tiani came in with another shot, and Hailey attempted a throw-by but left her head up.  Tiani is always looking for a throw and took Hailey right to her back with a tight head and arm.

In Sydney's first four matches she looked better than she has all year against some good wrestlers.  Her third match was especially nice.  After earning a first-period takedown, she was able to pin top-seeded Triggs in the second period with a cradle.  In the finals, she met up with Olson from Peshtigo.  This was a rematch of the Southern Door tournament finals, where Olson earned a close win.  The two are friends and summer practice partners.  Sydney came out flat and worked to keep up but didn't match Olson's intensity.

Delaney Wilke also competed and won her first match, but in the second match, she butted heads with Gosda from Mauston and was done for the day.  It's disappointing, but more important to be ready for the postseason.  The girls will not have a regional again this year.  All girls will wrestle at sectionals in two weeks.

This coming Saturday will start the postseason with SD Boys competing at Cedar Grove-Belgium in the super-regional format, with 16 teams competing and the top four advancing to sectionals.

Thanks

Coach Englebert

Eagles girls edged in Oshkosh by Wolverines

The Southern Door girls' basketball had a special experience that left a sour taste in their mouths after losing to Crivitz 47-44 at the Oshkosh Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The Oshkosh Arena is the home of the G-League's Wisconsin Herd and Global Women's Basketball Association's Wisconsin GLO in addition to several high school basketball games each year. The Eagles held a three-point lead at the break but could not hold onto the lead against the Wolverines.

Payton Gilbertson led the Eagles with 17 points, while Sophia Counard and Bella Price each had eight points. The Eagles were done in by Kiya Brand, who scored 18 points in the Wolverines' victory.

Veeser, Turner take second in Preble Girls Tournament

Two Southern Door wrestlers were right on the doorstep of individual titles at Green Bay Preble's girls' tournament on Saturday.

Sydney Turner and Hailey Veeser had a combined six pins to their name before falling in their final match of the day. Delaney Wilke's day ended earlier than she would have liked with a medical forfeit, but she still took fourth in the tournament.

Eagles girls snatch win from Wolves

The Southern Door Eagles girls' basketball team jumped to a 21-14 halftime lead and never let go in a 39-33 win over Algoma Thursday night.

Payton Gilbertson led the charge as she knocked down three three-pointers in the opening half to enter the locker room with 11 points and end her night with 14 points. Isabella Price matched her teammate with 14 points, while Sophia Counard added nine points in the Eagles win.

The Wolves dropped their third straight game and their fourth in the last five games despite Ryley Zimmerman leading all scorers with 15 points and Brooke Mattson chipping in 10 points.
