Coach looks ahead to wrestling postseason

On Saturday, our girls competed in the Green Bay Preble Girls Tournament.  This will be the last regular season action for the girls.  Unfortunately, most of our team was sick or had other commitments, but that didn't stop the girls who could make it.

Sydney Turner and Hailey Veeser both finished in second place.  Not where they wanted to finish but good experience for both of them.

Hailey earned two falls and quickly made the finals, facing Tiani LeMieux from Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol.  With one match already going in each girl's favor this season, we expected a great match.  Hailey gave up a takedown, but with a quick escape, she was back on her feet.  Tiani came in with another shot, and Hailey attempted a throw-by but left her head up.  Tiani is always looking for a throw and took Hailey right to her back with a tight head and arm.

In Sydney's first four matches she looked better than she has all year against some good wrestlers.  Her third match was especially nice.  After earning a first-period takedown, she was able to pin top-seeded Triggs in the second period with a cradle.  In the finals, she met up with Olson from Peshtigo.  This was a rematch of the Southern Door tournament finals, where Olson earned a close win.  The two are friends and summer practice partners.  Sydney came out flat and worked to keep up but didn't match Olson's intensity.

Delaney Wilke also competed and won her first match, but in the second match, she butted heads with Gosda from Mauston and was done for the day.  It's disappointing, but more important to be ready for the postseason.  The girls will not have a regional again this year.  All girls will wrestle at sectionals in two weeks.

This coming Saturday will start the postseason with SD Boys competing at Cedar Grove-Belgium in the super-regional format, with 16 teams competing and the top four advancing to sectionals.

Thanks

Coach Englebert
