Englebert reflects on Southern Door Wrestling's Regional performances

Congratulations to Mason Motquin, Trevor Englebert, and Lance Veeser.  All three qualified for next week's sectional tournament by placing in the top four at yesterday's D3 Regional tournament at Cedar Grove.  Mason and Trevor both finished second, and Lance third.  On the day, Trevor also earned his 100th career win.  A great milestone for him.

At 132, Mason started with a bye, followed by a quick pin.  In the semi-final, it was a second-period pin.   Mason took his time with an unfamiliar opponent just back from injury.  In the finals, Mason wrestled well against Carpenter from Oshkosh Lourdes.  After losing the takedown, Mason quickly earned a reversal and rode Carpenter for the rest of the first period.  In the second, Carpenter caught Mason and earned the fall.  Carpenter's only two losses the season were at 138, and he placed second in last year's state tournament at 126.  Mason beat Race from Cedar Grove for the second time in the wrestle back this season.  Mason controlled the match from start to finish, earning a 7-2 decision.  Next week, Mason will start with senior Brady Shepard (Waubeno Laona Three Lakes), who is 37-10 and finished third in the Crandon Regional.

At 144, Trevor also received a bye in the first round.  In the second round, Trevor did not wrestle his best but was good enough to earn an 8-3 decision and advance.  In the semi-final, Trevor lost to the eventual champion, Schacht from Mishicot. This was one of those matches where I think Trevor would agree he lost focus and was never really in the match.  He could have done much better.  In the third-place match, Trevor bounced back getting a first-period fall and a shot for a wrestle back for second.  To our surprise, Kelly from Oostburg defaulted due to a sore shoulder, conceding the spot to Trevor.  Next week, Trevor will start with junior Jordan Jahnke (Shiocton) 38-6.  This will be a rematch of a very close match Trevor lost 4-0 at Oshkosh.

At 150, Lance followed Mason's lead with a bye and a quick pin.  Unfortunately, in the semi-final, Lance lost to the eventual champion, Stone Pomeroy from Random Lake.  Pomeroy placed at last year's state tournament, which was too much for Lance today.  Lance bounced right back in the third-place match, looking very good getting a first-period pin.  Lance aggregated a knee injury in his wrestle back for second, so we chose to default the match and try to heal up for next week, leaving him in third.  Next week, Lance will start with junior Colin Fischer (Bonduel) 29-7.

Ethan Alexander wrestled well but came up short despite getting three wins, and Spencer Slezewski went 2-2 on the day.

We went into regionals a few wrestlers short due to injuries to sophomore Trevin Veeser, junior Wyatt Wilke, and senior Hayden Jeanquart.  Hayden qualified for sectionals last year and ended with 97 career wins.  Other seniors ending their careers this week were four-year wrestlers Spencer Slezewski and Thomas Jackson, along with newcomers Joe McDonald, Jonathan Alas and Joshua Nachtwey.  It was my privilege to coach all of these seniors, and it was fantastic having the newcomers help the team this year.

Next week, Saturday, the sectional tournament will be hosted by Bonduel but held at Shawano.  In addition to Mason, Trevor, and Lance, the girls will wrestle as well.  For the boys, the top three placers qualify for state.  For the girls, only the champion advances.  We'll look to fix a few small things this week but mainly stay fresh and healthy.

Thanks

Coach Englebert
