Southern Door's Claflin named to AP All-State Team

There haven't been high school sports in weeks, but that is not stopping one Southern Door athlete from getting some well-deserved recognition.

Ryan Claflin earned All-State Honorable Mention honors from the Associated Press this week, one of just 20 players in northeast Wisconsin to get the recognition.  Claflin has already earned All-State honors from the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association and was the Packerland Player of the Year. Before he suits up for the Green Bay Phoenix in the fall, Claflin will play in the WBCA All-Star game scheduled for Father's Day weekend.

Claflin gets All-Star nod

Southern Door's Ryan Claflin will see his high school career extended by at least one more game this summer.

The UWGB recruit and Packerland Player of the Year was selected to the Division 4 All Star-Game, playing for the white team. Claflin averaged over 22 points a game during his senior campaign. The Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association hosts the All-Star Game every year from the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. The game will be played on June 20th. You can find Claflin's All-Star game page by clicking here.

Southern Door gives up late lead in regional final loss

A scoring drought bit the Southern Door High School boys’ basketball team at the worst possible time Saturday evening. With four minutes to go, the Eagles had a 59-53 lead at Kohler before the Blue Bombers rattled off the game’s last seven points to steal a victory on their home floor. In his final game at Southern Door, Ryan Claflin netted 24 points to pace the Eagles. Nate Everard added 12, but Southern Door needed just a touch of additional production from the supporting cast. Kohler was able to find that, and it proved the difference.

Eagles bowling qualifies for state

The Southern Door bowling team has more opportunity to add hardware to its collection this season. Over the weekend, the team won its third straight conference tiles and also won the sectional championship. The team is made up of Ben McDonald, Brayden LeMieux, Coach Andy Hartel, Brooke Strege, Dylan Taylor and Kameron Robinson.

The team will head to Dale’s Weston Lanes for the Bowling Centers Association of Wisconsin State Tournament March 6th through 8th. The co-ed team will start bowling Friday at 7 p.m. while Taylor and LeMieux will compete in the individual tourney a couple of hours earlier at 4:30 p.m.

Coach reflects on Southern Door's state wrestling run

Below are the state wrestling results from this past weekend.  Unfortunately we didn't get the results we had hoped for.  Neither Griffin nor Grant were able to get a first round win to advance into their brackets.  Griffin was close on some takedowns but Miess proved to be a good scrambler and solid defensively.  Grant opened up the match giving up a takedown and nearfall to find himself down 5-0 in the first minute of the match.  After earning an escape he continued to battle back and tie the match 7-7 with 30 seconds remaining.  Looking to win, Grant awarded Heiden an escape but he could not get the needed takedown ending the match 7-8.

Each season the State Tournament brings a mix of emotions.  Both Griffin and Grant are juniors and at first it seems easy to say they have next year to look forward to.  Unfortunately, as we know, that isn't always the case.  Griffin had his illness, and Grant an injury that put both their seasons in jeopardy this year.  It is also easy to say "next year" if you don't know the amount of work both wrestlers put into being the best they can be "this year".  I know how hard they have worked.  It's also easy to brush off the losses if you've never had high goals.  I know both of their goals and how badly they both wanted to do better.

After a time I'm hoping both will appreciate the opportunity they have in front of them.  The opportunity to work hard, to improve, to lead their team and to achieve their goals.  Win or lose, I appreciate having such fine young men to coach and mentor.

Thank you to all of the wrestlers, wrestling fans, parents and supporters for making it a great season.
