The DC United girls' swimming team will travel to Ashwaubenon for their second meet of the year on Saturday.

In their last meet, DC United earned a 113 to 63 victory over Pulaski at the Door County YMCA last Thursday. The team finished in first place in nine of the eleven varsity events including both the 200-medley relay and 200 free relay. Sanya Wienke finished first in the 100 freestyle. Ella Wienke has a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke and a third-place finish in the 100 freestyle. Brooke Strege came in second in the 500 freestyle.

DC United will swim against De Pere and host Ashwaubenon when the meet begins at 1:30 p.m.

The top two basketball players in the Packerland Conference call Southern Door home.

Alex Daoust earned top honors on the boys side while Nicole Norton garnered them for the girls. Both were unanimous selections and first-team honorees.

Joining Daoust with All-Packerland Honors includes Nick Baudhuin, Nate Everard, Marcus Marchant, and Devin Schinktgen as honorable mentions.

Norton was a first-team selection while Hailey Shimon was named to the second team and  Natalee Jandrin was an honorable mention.

Earning All-Conference accolades for wrestling include Spencer Slezewski (106); Griffin Slezewski (138); Kyle Conard (152); Grant Englebert (170); Brad Skippon (182); Riley Phillips (220); Brodie Overbeck (285).  

Southern Door's bowling team has at least one more weekend of competition after recently qualifying for the state meet.

The Door County United Swim Team got off to a fast start in its first meet of the year earlier this week.

They earned the 113 to 63 victory over Pulaski at the Door County YMCA on Thursday night. The team finished in first place in nine of the eleven varsity events including both the 200-medley relay and 200 free relay.

Southern Door could not get past a tough Brillion squad in the WIAA Division 3 Regional Final as they fell 52-41.

The defense shined in this game as Southern Door's Alex Daoust and Brillion's Jeremy Lorenz were kept well below their season average. The lead changed hands several times in the first half before the Lions were able to make a run at the end to make it a 24-18 lead. The Eagles would tie the game halfway through the second half, but could never take the lead as the Lions were able to hold off Southern Door's advances to win the regional championship.

Nick Baudhuin led the way for the Eagles with 14 points while Nic Pierre added nine points.  Hunter Krepline led the Lions with 14 points while Lorenz pitched in 10 points.

Southern Door keeps their season alive by beating the Valders Vikings on Friday night 67-65.  Alex Daoust hit the game-winning free-throws to end the game. The Vikings kept a 10 point lead on the Eagles for the majority of the game before the Eagles pulled ahead in the final moments. 

Southern Door will continue their season against Brillion Saturday. Bryan Mazur and Tim Kowols will have the call on 102.1 MORE FM beginning at 6:30 p.m. with the pregame followed by tip at 7 p.m.

The Southern Door Eagles will travel to Valders to face the Vikings Friday night for the second round of the WIAA Division 3 playoffs. The Eagles won against the Clippers on Tuesday 43-32. Valders had a first round bye and they are ranked #2 in the regional. The Eagle/Vikings game will be on 102.1 More FM. Pre game is at 6:30 and tip off is at 7:00. This will be broadcasted by the student-led broadcast team of Reece Robillard and Brady Tooley.

Southern Door ends the game with the final score of 43-32 and advances to the next round of the WIAA playoffs.

Southern Door's Alex Daoust ended the game scoring above his usual average with a total of 21 points. Sturgeon Bay's Jack Schmelzer played stellar defense against the Eagles while also scoring above his average on the season.

The Southern Door will continue their season and play Valders this Friday on 102.1 MORE FM. Reece Robillard and Brady Tooley will have the call beginning at 6:30 p.m. with the pregame followed by the opening tip at 7 p.m.

Saturday 

concluded our 2020-2021 wrestling season.  Before getting into results, I would personally like to thank SD Schools for the opportunity to have a season amidst the pandemic.  I also want to thank the WIAA for making the post season as good as it was for the athletes involved.  Yesterday's state tournament was hosted in three different locations with tight restrictions on the number of spectators.  Despite the challenges, the effort to make the tournament look and feel like it has in the past did not go unnoticed by coaches or athletes.   Weigh-ins, the warm-up area, bull pen area, highlights video, parade of champions, and the awards presentations, among other things, were as good as could be expected.  While there's nothing like competing in front of 15,000 spectators at the Kohl Center in Madison, the effort by many people was greatly appreciated.

Grant Englebert was at Wausau East High School representing Southern Door at the D3 individual state tournament.  Grant made it to state in 2019 at 145 lbs his sophomore season and finished fifth.  In 2020 Grant qualified at 152 lbs, but lost by a point in the opening round and did not place.  This year Grant qualified at 160 lbs by finishing second at last week's sectional tournament in Valders.  Unlike recent years where the top three finishers at sectionals qualified for state, this year only the top two advanced.  

Grant's first-round opponent was the St. Croix Falls sectional champion from Boyceville, Tyler Dormanen.  Dormanen won his sectional with an impressive win over last year's state runner-up.  Dormanen likes to scramble and get his opponents out of position.  Grant came out strong and scored an early takedown.  After a penalty, point made it 2-1 Grant scored a reversal and two near-fall to advance to a 6-1 lead.  Grant stayed in a great position and was in control from start to finish.  Dormanen finished the day in third place.

In the semi-final match, Grant faced the Mineral Point sectional champion, David Malin from LaCrosse Aquinas.  Again, Grant came out strong scoring a quick takedown.  After giving up an escape, Grant got back on the attack and scored a second takedown to end the first period up 4-1.  Malin tried several times to force things, but Grant was able to keep control, earn near fall, and finally the pin late in the third period.  Malin would finish the day in fourth place behind Dormanen.

With the win, Grant advanced to the finals where he faced Aiden Vandenbush from Random Lake.  Vandenbush was a state champion at 152 lbs last year and has been ranked #1 all season long.  Vandenbush won each match at state last year by pin or tech fall.  In both the first and second rounds this year he earned pins early in the second period.  Grant worked hard to avoid tying up with Vandenbush and was able to get in on a few leg attacks but just couldn't finish.  Grant kept it close in the first period and was able to fend off a barrage of moves in the second before Vandenbush chose to go back to neutral and build his lead going into the third period.  In the third period, Grant made a couple of attempts, but Vandenbush was very smooth with his defense and counterattacks.

While no-one dreams of finishing in second place or falling short of a goal, Grant can still be proud of his place in the records of Southern Door Wrestling, his accomplishments, and his improvements.  Grant is only the third three-time state qualifier and amongst a handful of two-time place winners.  With the limited number of matches allowed this season, Grant won't have the statistics to match some of past years.  Grant finished 17-3 this season.  His only losses were to the fourth-place finisher at 170 in D2 when he moved up to get a quality match and in the sectional and state finals.  He didn't get a chance for the big tournament wins which would have been fun, but he did get wins over several highly ranked opponents this season.

Grant has plans to move on to the next level and see what he can do at UW- LaCrosse next fall.  We will be watching and look forward to having Grant come back up to the wrestling room any time he can.

Tuesday night will include the rivalry between the Southern Door Eagles and the Sturgeon Bay clippers Boys Basketball teams for the first round of the regional playoffs. The eagles are 15-4 on the season and are ranked #3 they are coming off of a win against Sevastopol, 100 - 57. The Clippers have an 9-7 on the season and they are ranked #6 in the region. The Clippers are also coming off of a win against Sevastopol 70-51. The Clippers/Eagles game will be on 102.1 More FM. Pre game is at 6:30 and tip off is at 7:00.This game will be broadcasted by the student-led broadcast team of Reece Robillard and Brady Tooley.

Southern Door's Grant Englebert finished his high school career with a little silver in his pocket after finishing second in the WIAA Division 3 State Tournament Saturday at Wausau West.

Englebert opened his day up in the 160-pound weight class with a regular decision before pinning Aquinas' David Malin in the 3rd period to earn his spot in the championship match. He eventually lost to Random Lake's Aidan Vandenbush by major decision. 

It was a season of major accomplishments for Englebert, who in addition to his runner-up finish he also reached 100 wins earlier in the season (pictured).

Southern Door fell to the Brillion Lions Friday night 58-43.

Southern Door’s Nicole Norton scored a total of 25 points at the end of the game but was no match for Brillion's defense. Brillion Lion Aubrey Williams played stellar defense against Natilee Jandrin successfully limiting the Eagles' scoring chances. After the game, Brady Tooley, Bryan Mazur, and Reece Robillard spoke with Southern Door’s head coach Jason Shimon, asking what was said in the locker room was asked. His response? “I thanked the girls for giving me a great season and for sticking with it due to the pandemic. Also thank you to the seniors for great leadership and I encourage the underclass girls to come out next year.”

The Brillion girls will continue the season next week.

The Southern Door Eagles will look to avenge a loss earlier this season when they play top-seeded Brillion Friday night on 102.1 MORE FM.

The Lady Eagles earned their spot in the semi-final with a 77-42 win over rival Sturgeon Bay on Tuesday. Nicole Norton helped solidify the win by bringing 27 points to the board. The Tigers had a bye to the semi-final round after going 20-2 on the season including a 43-32 win over Valders their last time out.

The Tigers won the previous matchup 76-41 in Brussels. Norton scored 22 points in the loss, but only three other Eagles scored and none of them scored more than eight. Meanwhile the Tigers had three players score in double figures including 27 from Megan Schuman.

Bryan Mazur and Annie Dalbis will have the call with the game beginning at 7 p.m.

Southern Door continues to soar through the playoffs after winning against Sturgeon Bay 77-36.

Nicole Norton helped solidify the win by bringing 27 points to the board. Allianna Duffeck played good offense and managed to get under the hoop several times to put up the ball scoring a large portion of the points tonight.

Clipper standout Carley Wodack helped her team by scoring the majority of their points. She was assisted by Jaiden Adams' outstanding defense. Unfortunately, the Clippers season was put to an end but they are having high hopes for next year.

The Eagles will move on to play Brillion in the Regional semifinal. 102.1 MORE FM will carry the game beginning at 6:30 p.m. with the pregame followed by the opening inbound at 7 p.m.

A cross-county rivalry kicks off the WIAA Division 3 playoffs as Southern Door hosts Sturgeon Bay on Tuesday night.

The Eagles have won eight of their last nine including a 62-34 win over Algoma on Saturday. In that game, Nicole Norton continued to make her case for player of the year honors in the Packerland with a 20-point, eight-assist night for the Eagles. 

The Clippers are still without a win this season, falling to Peshtigo its last time out 59-31. Carley Wodack currently leads the Clippers in scoring, rebounding, and assists this season. She was limited to just four points the last time these two teams met in a 67-34 Eagles win.

Brady Tooley and Reece Robillard will have the action on 102.1 MORE FM beginning at 6:30 p.m. with the pregame followed by tip-off at 7 p.m.

There will be no sharing of the Packerland Conference championship after Southern Door toppled Sevastopol 100-59 Monday night.

It was a shootout in the first half as the two team combined to score 90 points as the Eagles went into the break up 10 points. The Eagles' defense would clamp down after that, limiting the Pioneers to just 19 points the rest of the way. 

Alex Daoust and Nate Everard each scored 21 points while three other Eagles registered double-figures. Manav Jandu dropped 13 points while Jack de Young chipped in 11 points in the Pioneers' defeat.

The Eagles officially clinched at least a share of the Packerland title on Saturday, but ensured they would not have to share it with Monday's win.

The Southern Door boys' basketball team is not done yet after clinching its seventh straight Packerland Conference title over the weekend with a game against Sevastopol on Monday.

The Eagles did so by toppling Peshtigo 67-57 on Saturday behind a 21 point night from Devin Schinktgen. Alex Daoust scored 19 and Nate Everard added 10 as the trio knocked down nine threes in the game.

The Pioneers are coming off a 75-67 loss at Algoma where they carried a 12 point lead into the break. If they could have held on, it would have been their first win of the season. The Eagles won the previous matchup 64-42.

Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.

Congratulations to Grant Englebert for finishing second at todays individual wrestling tournament and qualifying for state.  Grant joins an elite group as only the third Southern Door wrestler to earn his third trip to state.  The other two being Kevin Guilette and Michael Bertrand.

Grant was in a very familiar bracket today.  Kolton Tesarik of Mishicot ranked #6, Ryan Roy of Wabeno ranked #3 and Mason Haas of Amherst ranked #4 joined Grant who is currently ranked #5.  Grant beat Tesarik in the regional final last week, lost to Roy in the sectional semi final last year and has beaten Haas in very close matches each of he past three seasons.  The bracket also included two honorable mention wrestlers and the 8th ranked wrestler from Coleman making this a very strong bracket.

Grant started the day with an 8-1 win over honorable mention Colten Schuh of Shiocton to advance to the semi finals.  Grant was able to score two takedowns early to set the pace but couldn't turn Schuh.  Overall a very good controlled match for Grant.  Schuh never mounted any offense and wrestled very defensively.

In the semi final Grant faced Haas.  Haas was the sectional champion last year and advanced to the state semi finals before losing in overtime.  Grant started slow and gave up an early takedown but from there scored a reversal and never looked back earning a 6-3 win and a spot in the finals.  All season long Grant has been very hard to hold down and is very good with the switch.  Another very good match that wasn't as close as the score looked.  Haas is a very good wrestler with a style that Grant likes to wrestle.

In the finals Grant faced Roy.  Unfortunately Roy seemed to be a step ahead of Grant on his feet today and got two takedowns in the first period to go ahead 4-1.  Roy quickly let Grant go every time Grant was close to getting away to avoid Grant's switch and stay off the bottom.  Grant changed his attack in the third period but it was too little too late.  We'll look to make corrections for a possible rematch next week.

Ironically Roy was coached by SD Alum Tyler Wagner last year and is now coached by SD Alum Colin Schubert.

With only two wrestlers advancing to state from each sectional this year, Grant will join Roy in representing the 160 lb weight class from our section next week Saturday.  Due to the pandemic the state tournament finals are not being held in Madison this year.  Each division is being hosted in a different location with Division 3 being held at Wausau East.  This years brackets were also cut from 12 wrestlers to 8 so the tournament can be run in a single day.  The first round will start at 9:00 AM with the finals starting at 5:00.

Also competing today were Spencer Slezewski, Trevor Englebert and Brodie Overbeck.  Spencer and Trevor both placed 6th which is a very positive step toward next season.  They have both improved each week and continue to develop their knowledge.  Brodie went 2-2 on the day.  Brodie takes a step closer each year and will be ready for state next season.

The DCU boys swim team competed at WI State Championship Friday night in Waukesha. The team opened their competition with a 14th place finish in the 200 Medley Relay swam by Jacob Norton, Drew Rass, Connor Thompson, and Luke Bousley. Next up was the 200IM and Ethan Almstadt finished 9th and Luke Bousley hit the podium with personal best time of 2:02.78 and a 5th place finish. Jacob Norton was the lone competitor in the 50 Freestyle and came home with a 14th place finish. The 100 Free saw Luke Bousley come in 14th place with a time 50.08. The 200 Freestyle Relay saw the team of Luke Bousley, Ethan Almstadt, Drew Rass, and Jacob Norton finish in 7th place. The final event of the night for DCU swimmers saw Drew Rass come home in 9th place in the 100 Breaststroke and Jacob Norton post the highest finish of the evening for the team with a Bronze medal finish and 3rd place showing in the 100 Breaststroke. It was truly a great season for the whole team, and an honor to coach such great group of young men. They represented Door County with class and sportsmanship and the support from the community and parents was as always amazing. Thanks, and GO DCU!

Hailey Shimon, Nicole Norton, and Allianna Dufek made sure the Southern Door Eagles did not lose their final tune-up before next week's playoffs. 

The trio combined to score 31 of the team's 35 first-half points and 49 points overall in the Eagles 62-34 win over the Wolves. With help from five combined threes, Norton finished with 20 points and Shimon with 19 points.

Halle Panger hit the Wolves' only three en route to a 13 point effort. 

For a third time in his wrestling career, Southern Door's Grant Englebert is heading to the state tournament.

Englebert started strong with two straight decisions but ran into a tough opponent in Wabeno/Laona/Three Lakes's Ryan Roy who beat him 12-5. Despite being sent back into wrestlebacks, Englebert won the second place and the berth to the state tournament with a no-contest over Amherst's Mason Haas, who he beat earlier in the day. Englebert became the third wrestler in Southern Door history to qualify for the state tournament three times.

The Southern Door Eagles got the win they needed to clinch a share of the Packerland Conference crown against the Peshtigo Bulldogs by the score of 67-57.

After being down by one at the break, the Eagles soared back to outscore the Bulldogs 36-25 in the final frame. Devin Schinktgen matching the Bulldogs' Adam Bauman with scored 21 points to lead their respective teams. Alex Daoust hit four three-pointers to contribute 19 points to the win. 

The two teams combined for 19 made three-point shots in the Eagles victory. 

After jumping out to a 10 to nothing Eagles lead, Nicole Norton then led the way with 37 as the Southern Door Eagles won at home over the Gibraltar Vikings 82-46. The Eagles looked good with a high paced offense that coach Shimon said reminded him of the earlier part of the season when sharing the ball lifted the Eagles to previous victories. Hallee Shimon also was another major contributor for Southern Door adding 17 on the night. 

Gibraltar had a lot that they could build on heading into Regionals after their performance tonight as Karlee Kita was a force underneath the basket putting in 16 and Moroney was the leading scorer for the adding 17 and spending much of the night matched up defensively on Norton. Both teams have one more game before their Regional opening games Next Week Tuesday. Gibraltar heads to Sevastopol and Southern Door hosts Sturgeon Bay. Both games will be covered by NEW Radio Sports Network. 

With four state-qualifying seasons under his belt, Southern Door's Lucas Bousley admits his final one may go down as one of the weirdest.

The Culver's Door County Student-Athlete of the Week was the top seed in several events at last weekend's sectional meet in Ashwaubenon and advanced to the state meet in the 200 medley relay, 200 individual medley, and 100 freestyle. This weekend's state meet will not just be his first not at the UW Natatorium in Madison, but it will also be one of the few with fans this season due to COVID-19 protocols. He says fans add a lot to his swims, but the quietness at the meets had its positives.

Despite having some of his fastest times this year at the sectional meet, he had to wait five hours to find out if he had made this year's state meet. Bousley says there are things he did to calm his nerves until the times were finally posted. 

After high school, Bousley plans on attending UW-Stout as he pursues a job in technical education. The WIAA Swim Meet for Division 2 swimmers will take place on Friday at Waukesha South.

Friday night will include the rivalry between the Southern Door Eagles and the Gibraltar Vikings girls' basketball teams.

The Southern Door Eagles are coming off of a win against the Sevastopol Pioneers 43-38 on Tuesday night. The Eagles are 12-4 on the season and are looking to gain another win before the playoffs. The Gibraltar Vikings are coming back from a loss to the N.E.W. Blazers 59-42 on Tuesday night and two weeks off due to COVID-19 protocols. The Eagle/Vikings game will be on 102.1 More FM. The pre-game is 7:00 pm and tip-off is at 7:30 pm. The student-led broadcast team of Reece Robillard and Brady Tooley will have the call.

It goes without saying that Nicole Norton's senior year at Southern Door has been anything but usual.

In the fall, Norton saw her volleyball season start before it eventually got pushed to the spring, There was doubt the basketball season would start and the Eagles even went through a two-week shut down due to quarantine. Despite it all, Norton scored her 1000th point last Friday as she leads the team in scoring this season with 25 points per game. Norton says her success is a testament to her teammates.

She is doing it all while also playing club volleyball, fitting in a tournament in Omaha, Nebraska after scoring that 1,000th point. Even with the club commitment, Norton says she is all about her high school team.

Norton plans on playing volleyball at Minnesota's Macalester College where she will also go to school for something in the environmental sciences field.
