Southern Door Volleyball Struggles

The Southern Door volleyball team struggled to get anything going on Saturday. The Eagles played five opponents in a tournament held at Valders and fell to all five of them. They lost to Kiel 25-14, 15-25, 7-15. The other four games only went two sets. The Eagles lost to Valders 16-25, 15-25, Manitowoc Luthern 19-25, 10-25, Winneconne 17-25, 13-25, and to Oconto 15-25, 14-25.

Southern Door will look to bounce back on Tuesday when they travel to Oconto.

Eagles cruise past Truckers

The Southern Door Eagles got their 2020 campaign off on the right foot Friday night with a 44-7 victory at Clintonville.

Alex Daoust threw four touchdowns in the game, including two in the first half on either side of touchdown runs by Nick Baudhuin and Christian Counard. It was 30-0 before the Truckers got on the board in the second quarter on 70 plus yard scramble by Brock Smejkal.

After a scoreless third quarter, Daoust threw another two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to send the game to a running clock. Devin Schinktgen and Marcus Marchant had a big impact on both sides of the ball, catching a touchdown pass and picking off the Trucker passes.

The Eagles host Peshtigo for their homecoming game next Friday at 7 p.m. 102.1 MORE FM will carry the game beginning at 6:30 p.m. followed by kickoff.

Southern Door meets Clintonville on the road on 102.1 MORE FM

Both the Southern Door Eagles and the Clintonville Truckers hope to start 2020 on the right foot when they meet each other for the first time as conference opponents Friday night.

The Eagles are trying to erase the memories of a 2-6 season last year and break a three-game losing streak dating back to the 2019 campaign. Returning to the team is running back Nick Baudhuin, who broke the school's rushing record with 403 yards on 37 carries in the team's 39-14 win over Crivitz. He along with quarterback Alex Daoust return as two of the team's seven seniors. The team remains young with 14 sophomores on the roster.

The Truckers make the switch from the Northeastern Conference to the Packerland Conference after not registering more than three wins in a season since 2010. A big reason is why is the offense, which has not averaged more than a touchdown a game since 2015. Seniors Brady Kasson, Nathan Morse, Ryan Wegenke, Tyler Tellock, and Brock Smejkal highlight a team that will be coached for the first time by Nick Winkler.

Tim Kowols and Bryan Mazur will have the call of the game on the NEWRadioSportsNetwork and 102.1 MORE FM beginning at 6:30 p.m. with the pregame show followed by kickoff at 7 p.m.

New look Eagles ready for Peshtigo

The Southern Door Eagles volleyball team will have some familiar faces on the bench this year and we are not talking about freshmen.

The Eagles have a completely new coach staff this season, but they are all alums. Taylor Jandrin has taken the reins as the team's head coach with Alyssa Dantoin, Kelsey Pavlik, and Marissa Norton serving as assistants. The preliminary roster shows all five of the Eagles all-conference performers returning this fall including Jackie Atkins, Nicole Norton, Carissa Bartels, Kendra Dantoin, and Anna Olson.

The Bulldogs were able to squeeze in three matches already this season thanks to a quad meet at Oconto. They were swept 2-0 in their first two matches against NEW Lutheran and Oconto before beating Valders 2-0.

Friday's match at Southern Door begins at 7 p.m.

Southern Door athletics ready to roll

Southern Door High School will help ring in the new sports year in style Thursday when it hosts two different events. It has been since March 7th since an Eagles squad competed with school shutdowns occurring the following week after a 60-59 boys basketball loss to Kohler. Since then it has been about how to get kids back to school and back to sports safely. Athletic director Korey Mallien credits Packerland Conference commissioner Mike Holtz and the principals for their hard work getting to this point.

Things will certainly look different when teams begin competing. Spectators will be limited to just two per student while athletes will be asked to mask up in most situations. Mallien says the volleyball team, which boasts a completely new coaching staff of Eagles alums, has been a gold standard.

Southern Door’s busy day begins at 4:00 p.m. when it hosts a cross country meet with Oconto and Sevastopol paying a visit before the volleyball team takes on the Peshtigo Bulldogs at 7 p.m. The football team starts its season on Friday on the road at Clintonville, a game you will be able to hear on 102.1 MORE FM. You can listen to the full interview with Korey Mallien online at NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com under the podcasts section.

Running Returns

With the new set of metrics brought forth by the Packerland, the conference’s first cross country meet is set to take place. Sevastopol, Kewaunee, Southern Door, and Oconto will compete at Southern Door on Thursday. Sturgeon Bay and Gibraltar are not competing this season. Kewaunee's girls are looking to defend their conference title while everyone is looking to overthrow the Peshtigo boys.

The conference invitational is set for Thursday at 4:00 p.m. at Southern Door High School.
