Southern Door looks to fill out coaching staffs

Southern Door is hoping to have a pair of coaching staffs filled out by the time the teams reconvene next school year.

Last week the school announced the hiring of Josh Vandenbush as its varsity boys basketball coach. Despite Vandenbush being the program's third varsity coach in three years, the Eagles continued their streak of Packerland Conference championships. It is still in search for an assistant varsity coach.

The Southern Door volleyball is looking for a varsity head coach, a junior varsity coach, and a seventh-grade coach. Craig Kain led the Eagles to a regional final appearance last year.

The baseball team is also searching for an assistant coach.

DKHS.com's Champion of Champions Series: 1989 Southern Door Football

"Second time's a charm" did not apply to the 1989 Southern Door football team after winning the state title in its first attempt.

By first attempt, that means in the playoffs period, not just in the state title game. Led by future Notre Dame and NFL player Jim Flanigan, the Eagles did not fly through the air but rather on the ground. It was never more true in that fateful state championship game against Westby at Camp Randall Stadium. Flanigan rushed the ball 42 times (third-most in D4 history) for 215 yards. His 38-yard field goal is among the longest in D-4 history in the state title game and his touchdown pass to Jason Norton just added to the lore of the 17-7 win over the Norseman. En route to their first state title in football, the Eagles beat Manawa 35-6, Howards Grove 14-7 in overtime, and Poynette 17-0.  During the regular season, it won 10-7 over Luxemburg-Casco, who would go on to be the state runner-up in Division 3.

DKHS.com's Champion of Champions Series: 1994 Southern Door Softball

After missing out on the state tournament in 1993, the 1994 Southern Door Eagles softball team was able to find their way back and win the championship.

Led by Glen Vander Helden, the Eagles were able to shut out Dodgeville 8-0 to capture the state's top prize. Sara Tlachac brought the lumber for the tournament starting with the Eagles' first matchup against Amery. Tlachac tied a state record with four RBI in a single game on her way to a Division 2 tournament record of six RBI. She did that by playing long ball against Amery setting a single game and tournament record for home runs with two.

DKHS.com's Champion of Champions Series: 1992 Southern Door Softball

Southern Door has featured great softball teams in the past like last year's squad that made it to the state tournament, but the breakthrough came in 1992.

That year the Eagles won the state championship by pounding Lodi 13-5. Tanya DeBroux tied a tournament record by scoring six runs in the two-game string in Division 2.  The Eagles were led by coach Glen Vander Velden, who was also at the helm of the 1994 team that also won a state championship. That team will be featured at DoorKewauneeHighSchoolSports.com later this week.
