Eagles soar over Wolves on U102.1

The Southern Door Eagles were able to fend off the feisty Algoma Wolves 73-63 behind Drew Daoust’s record-breaking 29 points on Tuesday night on U-102.1.

It was well documented that Daoust was just north of 20 points away from breaking the Southern Door and Door County scoring record entering the matchup against Algoma. Daoust started the game off for the Eagles, scoring the team’s first 7 points. The Wolves, however, would not make it easy for the Junior guard, as they matched point for point early with Southern Door.

Daoust got help from Caden Pierre from outside the arc, draining three of his four made threes in the first half. The Wolves were led by Chase Romdenne in the first half, scoring 11 of his 17 points in the first half.

Daoust missed a deep three as the buzzer sounded to keep him short of the county record after the first half, as he entered the locker room with 20 points and a 43-29 lead for the Eagles.

It did not take long for Daoust to break the record however, as a fast break layup in traffic gave Daoust 1,567 points in his career, officially snapping the long-held record of Nathan Vogel (1,566).

Algoma did not let Daoust bask in all the glory, however, as they mounted a run of their own, cutting the lead into single digits, but the closest they got was 8, and Drew Daoust closed the game out with 29 points and a 73-63 Southern Door victory.

Algoma was led by Chase Romdenne, who scored 17 points, while Parker Lischka added 13 more for the Wolves.

When asked about breaking the record after the game, Daoust talked about relying on his team and the Eagles coaching staff throughout the game and the season to get him where he is at now. What’s next for Daoust? A run at 2,000 points and another Conference Championship, the 8th championship in 9 seasons.
