Eagles Outlast Clippers for Overtime Win

On Friday night in Brussels, the Southern Door Eagles and Sturgeon Bay Clippers played an overtime game, with the Eagles winning 70-69 on U-102.1.

The Eagles scored the game's first points and would hold the lead for most of the first half.  On the way to the 30-30 halftime score, the Clippers fought back several times from being down as much as 8.  The second half had a similar back-and-forth battle, with both teams taking leads and then losing them just as quickly.

Ashlynn Delfosse would miss most of the second half after picking up a fourth foul early in the second half.  Things would get very interesting as things approached the final seconds of regulation.  The Eagles trailed by 2 with 15 seconds left.  Coach Alyssa Conway would call a timeout to draw up the final play.  The Clippers defended well, but Kyleigh Clafin would take a baseline shot that bounced off the backboard and in as the buzzer sounded, ending regulation 60-60.

Clafin would add 4 more of her team-leading 22 points in the overtime period.  Alyssa Bouche added four overtime points and was the second-highest Eagle on the night with 14.  The Clippers kept things close all night thanks to their success at the free-throw line.  They would shoot 21-34 from the charity stripe, including 15 of 20 out of Regan Kasten, the Clippers second highest scorer with 23. As overtime wound down, it would be the Clippers' turn to draw up a final play.  Coach Dan Tjernagel called a timeout with 9.9 seconds left, trailing by 1.  The play drawn up would get Dasha Yeltysheva a shot from just underneath the basket.  Unfortunately, she would miss the shot and end the game with her team-high 28 points.

The Clippers' next game is on Monday, when they play Three Lakes on the road. Southern Door will also play Algoma on Tuesday night.
