A strong second start to the 2nd half was enough for Southern Door to power past Sturgeon Bay, as heard on U102.1 on Thursday night.
Southern Door and Sturgeon Bay faced off in Packerland Conference boy’s basketball, and traded baskets throughout the first half. It wasn’t until late in the 1st, when Southern Door was able to creep out to a 10 point lead, which prompted Sturgeon Bay to take a timeout. Out of the timeout, the Clippers promptly got a basket to cut the lead back to single digits. As the half came to a close, when many thought the Eagles may hold for the final shot, Drew Daoust hit a 3 point shot just after bringing the ball across midcourt, leaving Sturgeon Bay to scramble to answer. The Clippers were unable to get a shot off, and went into the locker room trailing 36-25.
Southern Door came out of the break red hot from the floor, going on a 12-2 run to open the game up to a 48-27, prompting another Sturgeon Bay timeout. Once again, the resilient Clippers would fight back and answered with an inbound basket to cut into the deficit. Fortunately for the Eagles, Drew Daoust took command, whether it was driving to the lane, or passing to open shooters and building the lead back up to as high as 25, giving Southern Door firm control of the game.
Sturgeon Bay would have one last rally, as Jackson Starr got going in the 2nd half, as well as some sharpshooting from Benjamin Ash, among others, who trimmed the lead down to 18. Before the run could continue much further, Caden Pierre drew an offensive foul on Starr, effectively ending the late rally for the Clippers.
Drew Daoust led all scorers with 33 points, and was joined in double figures by Caden Pierre, who chipped in 17. Tyler Neinas also was a big contributor with 8 points, 6 of which came in the 2nd half.
For the Clippers, Braden Evers led the way with 13, and Jackson Starr added 12 for the ballgame.
Southern Door continues a very busy stretch of schedule, hosting Green Bay NEW Lutheran on Saturday night, and then Denmark on Monday. Sturgeon Bay will get a break in the game schedule before traveling to Green Bay NEW Lutheran on Friday, January 24th.
