Southern Door pieces together first conference win

Despite giving up a kickoff return for a touchdown and a pick-six, Southern Door reached 1-0 in conference play in Mishicot on Friday, winning 28-20. The first quarter was scoreless as both teams exchanged interceptions. Drew Daoust, who replaced an injured Jack Peterson at quarterback, had a pass intercepted in the endzone by Logan Marqaurdt early in the game. Shortly after, Jared Hawkey intercepted a Jacob Hibbard pass in the first quarter.

Southern Door rode their backfield tandem of Jonas Jandrin and Luke Olson, with a dash of Derek Schinktgen. In the first minute of the second quarter, Olson scored from 11 yards out which put Southern Door up, 6-0. For Mishicot, Marquardt returned the ensuing kickoff 70 yards to tie the game at 6 apiece. With over five minutes remaining, Marquardt grabbed his second interception of the night at the Mishicot goalline. On the following play, the Southern Door defensive line answered by sacking Hibbard in the endzone, and gaining an 8-6 lead with the safety. Later in the quarter, Mishicot scored a 38-yard touchdown on a deep ball from Hibbard to Austin Fencl to go up 12-8.

Daoust and the Eagles got the ball back with well under a minute left before halftime, and Daoust launched a pass down to the three-yard line for Jared Hawkey, and Southern Door got a time-out off with a second left. It was enough time for Daoust to punch in a 3-yard touchdown and also get the two-point conversion on a similar play, making the score 16-12 heading into the break.

Midway through the third quarter, Brodie Overbeck blocked a punt which set up Southern Door’s offense to start their next drive at the 41-yard line of Mishicot. Daoust let Jonas Jandrin run under a 31-yard throw for a touchdown to put Southern Door up by two scores, 22-12. With seven seconds left in the third. Mishicot’s Adam Backus got a pick-six and put Mishicot within two points of Southern Door. Jonas Jandrin got the last score of the game with 1:28 remaining, when he ran in a 21-yard touchdown. On the last-chance possession for Mishicot, Taylor Schaefer broke up a pass intended for Fencl to seal the game.

Southern Door is now 1-0 in conference and 3-1 overall. The Eagles head to Bonduel on Friday. The game will be broadcasted on 104.1 WRLU with pregame coverage starting at 6:30 PM.
