Clippers outshoot, out-pressure United on U-102.1

The Sturgeon Bay soccer team took a few minutes to find their rhythm on Monday night, but eventually cruised to a 3-0 win. In the 20th minute, it was a cross from Ismaili to Stephenson who found the net off a header to start the scoring for the Clippers. After that, the Clippers were in control for the majority of the game. In the 40th minute, right before halftime, Jaxzen Bleck used his head for the second goal of the match off a cross from Champeny.

The United started the second half strong, and the Clippers' backline held strong for the next 40 minutes, not conceding any goals. In the 64th minute, Aiden Benzinger was able to put Sturgeon Bay up 3-0, and that's where the contest would end.

Head coach Todd Maas was complimentary of his squad afterwards, saying it was a quality win against an opponent that always makes it a hard fought match. "The guys played a pretty solid match," Maas said. "Well organized, moved the ball, created opportunities for ourselves, good energy, so I would say that's a good win for us."

Sturgeon Bay is back in action Thursday when they travel to Kewaunee and the United are back at home against Algoma.

Clippers rebound with win over Raiders, face United on U-102.1

Days after a draw to Peshtigo, the Sturgeon Bay Clippers responded in a big way with a 3-0 victory over Pulaski.

Coach Maas said the team regrouped with a family sit-down to refocus on effort, expectations, standards, and character before putting in hard work at practice. The results showed on the field as the Clippers displayed strong energy, discipline, and teamwork throughout the match.

Simon Downey scored in the first half, converting a penalty kick after a foul in the box. Finn Stevenson delivered two goals in the second half to seal the win. His first came off a corner from Daniel Wienke, and his second was a highlight effort, beating the keeper to a bouncing ball and heading it in.

The Clippers’ turnaround performance set a new standard for the group moving forward. “We played as a team tonight, which has now set the bar a little bit higher in our expectation category,” said the coaching staff.

Clippers Soccer Back in Action

The Sturgeon Bay soccer team is traveling to Pulaski this Saturday.

This game follows Sturgeon Bay’s last game, where they tied 1-1 with Peshitgo. The draw left head coach Todd Maas looking for the drawing board to prevent future missteps. "We have to figure out how to maintain possession with a purpose and have a meaningful attack and score some goals," Maas said.

The Red Raiders split their two other matchups this week, losing to Bay Port 1-0 before  topping Beaver Dam on Thursday.

Clippers soccer play Bulldogs to draw

Despite the neutral result, a 1-1 draw against Peshtigo was not the result the Sturgeon Bay soccer team sought from their trip around the bay.

The Clippers dominated the Bulldogs in most other statistics on the evening, posting 23 shots that made it through, along with double-digit blocked shots. The Clippers earned 14 corner kicks to the Bulldogs' one. On a corner kick, the Clippers secured a halftime lead on an own goal. The Bulldogs tied the game in the second half to secure the point and leave head coach Todd Maas looking for the drawing board to prevent future missteps. "We have to figure out how to maintain possession with a purpose and have a meaningful attack and score some goals," Maas said.

Maas credited the Bulldogs with the strong performance, saying that "hey played better than I've seen them do in a long time.  They played pretty defensive and made it tough for us to get through their low block."

Clippers volleyball sinks Vikings

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers put on a strong performance at home, defeating the Gibraltar Vikings 3–1 in a match that featured big swings, strong serving runs, and gritty defense. After taking the first two sets, Gibraltar fought back to claim Set 3, but the Clippers responded with poise and closed out the match in Set 4 to secure the win.

Offensively, Miya Nell was efficient and steady, finishing with nine kills and a hitting percentage above .300 in multiple sets, making the most of her swings. Regan Kasten chipped in 7 kills across the night, hitting for .500 in stretches and giving Sturgeon Bay another reliable option in the offense. Yarrow Goettleman added nine kills of her own, including a couple of key momentum swings late in rallies. She also tallied two service aces, showing her ability to impact both at the net and behind the line. Audrey Harrington powered the offense with a match-high 16 kills, swinging aggressively from both pins and the back row. She added four aces, keeping Gibraltar under pressure from the service line. Izzy Schoeneman was a true two-way standout, tallying 13 kills at the net while also digging double-digit balls in the back row. Her all-around effort gave the Clippers energy in key rallies.

From the service line, Bristol Will sparked the Clippers with her serving, delivering 4 aces that gave Sturgeon Bay runs of momentum.

Defensively, Sofie Carmody was rock-solid in serve receive. Schoeneman’s digging and Harrington’s back-row presence anchored the defense, with Nell and Carmody adding consistency to extend rallies.

The Clippers showed balanced contributions across their lineup: Harrington leading with power, Schoeneman excelling as a two-way player, Nell and Kasten swinging efficiently, and Goettleman providing kills and aces. Bristol’s serving runs and Sofia’s steady play rounded out the team’s effort.

With the 3–1 win, Sturgeon Bay proved they can both dominate early and finish strong, building momentum as the season continues.

Clippers volleyball falls short against Storm

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers traveled to Kewaunee on Thursday, September 18, for a conference matchup, falling in three hard-fought sets (17–25, 18–25, 20–25).

Despite the sweep, the Clippers showed stretches of strong play, particularly in the third set, where they pushed Kewaunee to the wire before narrowly dropping the frame.

Offensively, Audrey Harrington powered the attack with eight kills and added 12 digs on the defensive end. Regan Kasten was highly efficient, tallying 5 kills on 9 swings for a .556 hitting percentage.

Defensively, Harrington’s 12 digs anchored the back row, supported by Izzy Schoeneman with six digs. In serve receive, Harrington and Schoeneman both posted strong passing numbers, each finishing with a rating above .80.

The Clippers tallied six service aces at the service line, led by Kasten with 2. Harrington, Schoeneman, Coyhis, and Carmody each added to this.

While the Clippers fell short, the match highlighted balanced contributions across the roster and showcased resilience in the third set. The team will look to build on these positives as conference play continues.

The slate didn’t get any easier with a matchup against Sun Prairie West (12-8), resulting in a 0-2 loss, before closing the day with another straight-sets defeat against Appleton East.

Despite the outcome, Sturgeon Bay showed grit and growth against quality opponents with strong early-season records. These challenges provide valuable experience as the Clippers continue to prepare for their conference schedule where they will face Kewaunee this Thursday at 7 p.m. on the road.

DCU swims strong at Ashwaubenon Jaguar Invite

The Door County United Girls Swim Team took 13th overall at the Ashwaubenon Jaguar Invite, earning a total of 39 total points, ahead of Notre Dame. The field of competitors included nine Division 1 swim teams, in addition to two of their fellow conference competitors, Seymour and Wittenberg-Birnamwood.

The combined efforts of Quinn Sperber (Sophmore-SDHS), Hazel Monfils (Freshman-SDHS), Chloe Bissen (Senior-SBHS), and Kailyn Neville (Senior-SDHS) took 12th overall in the 200 Medley Relay, earning 10 total points. Their efforts were supported in the 200 Free Relay where Bissen, Jillian Peterson (Freshman-SBHS), Monfils, and Neville found their way into 14th place to add an additional six points.

Both Monfils and Neville also contributed to the team's efforts in their individual events, supported by junior Shaeffer Rass (SEV). Monfils earned 10 individual points while swimming two personal bests, taking 14th in the 200 IM and 10th in the 100 Breast. In the 100 Breast, Rass joined her in the rankings taking 12th and bringing in five points. Neville placed 10th in the 200 Free and 16th in the 500 Free to earn eight points for the day.

Juniors Rachel Rock (SEV) and Hannah Denil (SBHS) also showed strong growth in the swims throughout the day, swimming personal bests in all of their swims throughout the meet. Rock dropped seven seconds on her 100 Back, improving the personal best she had just set Thursday against Clintonville. In a similar fashion, Denil dropped seven seconds on her 50 Free, dropping under 40 seconds for the first time in her high school career.

DCU's next meet is on Thursday, September 18 as they travel to swim against Marinette and resume conference competition.

Clippers soccer douse Blazers, face Hornets on The Pirate

The Sturgeon Bay soccer team will try to get its second straight win against a Green Bay area school on Friday night when it faces Green Bay Preble on its home field.

In Thursday's 5-0 road win over NEW Lutheran, the Clippers controlled the match offensively, with 42 shots, 28 of which were on frame, and nine corner kicks. Ashton Benzinger registered a brace while Joni Ismaili, Calvin Langfeldt, and Isaiah Eliason also tallied goals. Head coach Todd Maas said postgame that his team struggled to find a rhythm in their attacking third in the first half, which showed in the score being 0-0 at halftime. "Our halftime talk was productive, and the guys settled down and came out playing much more consistent and confident," said Maas.

They face a Hornets squad that is 2-2-1 on the season. They are winless in their last three matches, picking up a 1-1 draw against Pulaski in their last reported match.

Bryan Mazur and Peter Kerwin have the call on The Pirate (103.3 FM, 96.7 WBDK HD-2, and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com) beginning at 6:15 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the first touch at 6:30 p.m.

A few highlights include Atticus Haus coming in 7th place and Deacon Haus coming in 9th for the boys' Varsity team, which helped the boys' team place in 4th overall.  For our girls' team, our top runners were Scarlet Tomberlin in 17th place and Megan Selle in 20th, and the girls' team placed 4th overall.

Clippers soccer calm Storm on U-102.1

It was clear sailing for the Sturgeon Bay soccer team on Monday as they beat Kewaunee 8-0 on its home pitch.

The Clippers never allowed the Storm a chance to settle in, scoring three goals in the first 18 minutes of the match. While head coach Todd Maas thought the team played better in matches last week, he was happy that some of their reserve players got meaningful minutes in the contest. Three of the players (JJ Olson, Calvin Langfeldt, and Ashton Benzinger) scored their first goals on the varsity level against the Storm.  Daniel Wienke's brace led the way while Aiden B., Finn Stevenson, and Jaxzen B. also scored goals for the Clippers. Their next matchup comes on Thursday when they travel to Green Bay for a 4:30 p.m. match against NEW Lutheran.

Clippers look to weather Storm on U-102.1

As heard on U-102.1 on Thursday, Sturgeon Bay traveled to Gibraltar/Sevastopol and came away with a 3-1 win. The Clippers carried that momentum into Friday night at home on The Pirate, shutting out Kiel in a 4-0 victory. In Friday’s win, Daniel Wienke led the way with two goals, while Joni Ismaili and Kemal Ismaili each added one. Joni also delivered a highlight assist to Wienke for a simple tap-in finish.

The Storm have split their first two matches on the year, beating NEW Lutheran 7-1 before falling to neighboring Luxemburg-Casco 6-0.

Bryan Mazur and Peter Kerwin will have the call on U-102.1 beginning at 6:15 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the match at 6:30 p.m.

Clippers Roll Through Busy Week with Back-to-Back Wins on NRSN

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers closed out a strong week of soccer with two more victories, improving to 4-1-1 on the season.

As heard on U-102.1 on Thursday, Sturgeon Bay traveled to Gibraltar/Sevastopol and came away with a 3-1 win. The Clippers carried that momentum into Friday night at home on The Pirate, shutting out Kiel in a 4-0 victory.

Head coach Todd Maas praised his team’s performance against the Raiders, calling it one of their most complete games of the year.

“Our guys played really well. I thought we moved the ball pretty good. Our defense was strong and well-organized. A great team effort,” said Maas. “Obviously, there are always things to improve on, but this was a very clean game for us. I’m proud of the way the guys have progressed thus far.”

In Friday’s win, Daniel Wienke led the way with two goals, while Joni Ismaili and Kemal Ismaili each added one. Joni also delivered a highlight assist to Wienke for a simple tap-in finish.

Next week, the Clippers face another busy stretch with three scheduled matches, including two more at home. Maas hopes his squad can keep their energy high and the quality of play sharp as the season continues.

Clippers soccer reboot against Kiel on The Pirate

The Sturgeon Bay soccer team will return to work on Friday night when they host Kiel under the Clark Field lights.

The Clippers are amidst a busy stretch to begin their season, playing four matches in a week, including a Thursday night match against county rival Gibraltar/Sevastopol. They had their hands full in the first half on Thursday night when they battled the United in Fish Creek. The first half saw a strong defensive stance by the United team, and it was a breakaway goal in the 32nd minute that gave United a 1-0 lead in the first half. Coming out of halftime, the Clippers looked sharper and more relaxed. Daniel Wienke, assisted by Will Estes, leveled the match in the 52nd minute. Then, 10 minutes later, Wienke scored his second goal of the night in the 62nd minute (unassisted). Only moments later, Joni Ismaili would score off a turnover for the Clippers in the 65th minute, giving the Clippers a 3-1 lead as the final tally.

The Raiders were a thorn in the side of the Clippers last season, bouncing them from the tournament with a 4-0 win after opening the campaign with a 2-0 victory. With a 19-4 mark last year, the Raiders made it to the state semi-final in Milwaukee. This year, the Raiders dropped their first two matches before rattling off a 4-1 win over Random Lake/Ozaukee and a 3-2 loss to Xavier on Tuesday.

Bryan Mazur and Peter Kerwin will have the call from Clark Field beginning at 5:15 p.m. on The Pirate (103.3 FM and 96.7 WBDK HD-2) followed by the first touch at 5:30 p.m.

In other soccer action, Washington Island welcomes NEW Lutheran for a match at 5:30 p.m.

Clippers volleyball outlasted by Blue Devils

The Clippers battled Oconto on Thursday, September 4, at Oconto High School, falling in four tight sets (26–28, 23–25, 25–18, 21–25). The girls showed resilience, with strong defensive play and balanced contributions across the board.

Regan Kasten and Izzy Schoeneman anchored the defense with a combined 33 digs. Yarrow Goettelman contributed on both sides of the net with 7 kills, 11 digs, 2 aces, and 3 blocks. Miya Nell added 5 kills, an ace, and 2 blocks. Running the offense, Makenna Coyhis dished out 29 assists to go along with her 7 digs, ace, and block.

Clippers, United meet under the lights on U-102.1

A derby between county rivals is set for Thursday night in Fish Creek when Sturgeon Bay makes the trip north to face Gibraltar/Sevastopol.

The Clippers are fresh off of a 5-0 win over Luxemburg-Casco on Tuesday, featuring goals from Joni Ismaili, Will Estes, Simon Downey, Aiden Benzinger, and Daniel Wienke. After going 0-1-1 at The Prairie School over the weekend, Coach Todd Maas said that, “We played more as a team, the ball moved more fluidly, and we made the most of our chances in and around the 18” after entering the second half with a slim 1-0 advantage.

The United have been idle since posting a 2-0 road win against Providence Academy. Their defense was on point for the match, allowing the Paladins just three shots on net.

Last season, both the United and the Clippers won regional titles, which set up a sectional semifinal date that the Clippers won 4-0. In three victories, the Clippers outscored the United 14-3.

Bryan Mazur and Peter Kerwin will have the call on U-102.1 beginning at 6:15 p.m. with the pregame show, followed by the first touch from Gibraltar at 6:30 p.m.

Other soccer matches scheduled for Thursday include Luxemburg-Casco traveling to Clintonville (4:30 p.m.), Kewaunee hosting Providence Academy (4:30 p.m.), and Algoma visiting Peshtigo (4:30 p.m.).

Sturgeon Bay Volleyball Continues Development

The Sturgeon Bay varsity volleyball team competed in the Seymour Quad Tuesday, their third tournament of the young season, and showed signs of continued growth against a challenging field.

After falling in straight sets to Pulaski (18-25, 18-25) and Little Chute (17-25, 19-25), the Clippers pushed Seymour to three sets. They opened strong with a 25-19 win, dropped the second set 6-25, and narrowly came up short in the third 11-15.

Coach Mary Harrington noted the strides her team is making. “While the results didn’t all go our way, the team continues to build chemistry and push forward as the season gains momentum.” Sturgeon Bay now shifts focus to their conference opener Thursday at Oconto.

Dominant Second Half Pushes Sturgeon Bay to Victory

After what head coach Todd Maas called a “just okay” first half — one that saw plenty of missed chances but still a 1-0 lead — the Sturgeon Bay Clippers (2-1-1) came alive in the second half to close out a 5-0 win over Luxemburg-Casco (0-2) on Tuesday.

The scoring spread around as five different players found the net: Joni Ismaili, Will Estes, Simon Downey, Aiden Benzinger, and Daniel Wienke.

When asked about the turnaround after halftime, Coach Maas said, “We played more as a team, the ball moved more fluidly, and we made the most of our chances in and around the 18.”

Two tough tests await the Clippers later this week with back-to-back matchups against Gibraltar on Thursday and Kiel on Friday. For Luxemburg-Casco, a Thursday contest with Clintonville provides their next chance to rebound.
