Evers earns Academic All-State honors

Sturgeon Bay forward Gannon Evers picked up one last award this winter sports season after being named to the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Academic All-State Team.

Evers had to reach the threshold that requires that nominated athletes be varsity players from any grade level and hold a GPA of at least 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale). He was the only local boys' athlete to be named to the squad.  He joins these athletes that were named to the girls' Academic All-State team last week.

Clippers can't push brakes on Truckers in season finale on U-102.1

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers would get the game to within single digits several times during the game, but could never get closer as they eventually lost to the Clintonville Truckers 58-39.

The Clippers were put in a hole early as Jack Yaeger and Sam Wegener hit their shots for the Truckers while frustrating their visitor with a defense that yielded no points in the game's first four minutes. The defensive game plan centered around stopping Calvin Richard, which appeared to work for the Truckers as the senior scored no points in the first half and just four points from the free throw line for the whole game. Danny Lodl hit some outside shots in the first half to lead the Clippers with six points as they were down 30-18 at the break.

The  Clippers would get the deficit down to single digits several times in the second half, only to see the Truckers hit tough shot after tough shot to keep the Clippers at bay. Lodl would end up the only Clipper in double digits with 10 points; Jackson Starr scored seven points, and Hayden Tracy added six. Yaeger led all scorers with 26 points, Sam Wegener chipped in 10 points, and Jonathan Scherschel and Kade Rosenow each contributed 10 points.

Head coach Zach Goblisch expressed his pride in his team after the game, pointing out the adversity they faced and the accolades they collected along the way. The Truckers will head to Brussels to take on Southern Door in the Regional Final, a game that will air on 96.7  WBDK.

Clippers meet Truckers in Regional Semi-Final on U-102.1 Friday

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers could set up an All-Packerland Conference showdown on Saturday if they can leave Clintonville with a win on Friday night.

The Clippers defeated the Menominee Indian Eagles 79-61 on Tuesday.  Twice inside the last 10 minutes of the game, the Clippers held just a single-point lead after letting double-digit leads slip away.  Free throws, and plenty of them, helped build the leads back up multiple times as the Clippers went 27 of 35 from the charity stripe. Calvin Richard led the way in scoring for the Clippers, who put up 30 points while being a perfect 8-8 at the free throw line in the second half. Jackson Star scored 15 points, 13 of which came in the second half.

The Truckers split their last six games of the regular season to finish the year 16-8. Jack Yaeger leads the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 17.9 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.

Matt Malvitz and Tim Kowols will have the call on U-102.1 and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the opening tip at 7 p.m.
