Berns steps down from baseball position

Sturgeon Bay School District is looking for a new baseball coach after John Berns stepped down earlier this month.

Berns took over for Dan Lake in 2019, leading the Clippers to a 21-8 record and an appearance in the WIAA Sectional Final. After COVID canceled the 2020 season, Berns was manning the bench again in 2021, leading the Clippers to a 10-11 record before bowing out to Luxemburg-Casco in the regional opener. Previous to his time at Sturgeon Bay, Berns coached at Sevastopol where he managed the 1995 state-qualifying team.

Those interested in taking the job have until July 15th to apply.

Anderson gets podium finish in La Crosse

With Saturday being just for Division 1 state track and field qualifiers, teams on the peninsula now shift to summer and fall sports. On Friday, Sturgeon Bay sophomore Cate Anderson got on the state podium. She placed eighth in the 100-meter hurdles, with a time of 15.98. Anderson beat her time in the preliminaries where she also placed eighth, and ran a 16.44. Also in the preliminaries the 100-meter hurdles for Sturgeon Bay was Clippers senior Lauren Alger.

Alger, Anderson hurdle their way to state meet

Sturgeon Bay's two qualifiers in Friday's WIAA Division 2 State Track Meet in LaCrosse will just have to look down the starting line for motivation.

Lauren Alger and Cate Anderson will compete against each other in the second heat of the 100m hurdles. Anderson posted the eighth fastest time in the event while Alger has the 13th speediest. The 16 qualifiers are only separated by two seconds.

Events begin at 11 a.m.

Clippers girls soccer season comes to close

Saturday was the last time the 2021 Sturgeon Bay Clippers girls soccer team took the pitch.. The season ended in the WIAA playoffs with a 5-0 loss to Wrightstown. It was their second time being shut out by Wrightstown. Drew Starr had six saves for Sturgeon Bay, but the Clippers couldn’t get the firepower they needed to match the handful of goals. Sturgeon Bay ends the season with a 5-7 overall record, including a playoff win.

Sturgeon Bay girls soccer advances with shutout

Sturgeon Bay girls soccer displayed dominance in their shutout victory over Clintonville.  Mirada Olson led the way for the Clippers with four goals.  Also scoring for Sturgeon Bay were Maddy Hemmiger ad Josephine Rangel.  Drew Starr and Amer Spittlemeister had one save each in the goal.  The victory over Clintonville holds them to a winless mark on the season and concludes their 2021 campaign. With the win,  #3 seeded Sturgeon Bay advances in the WIAA Playoffs. The Clippers now earn the right to face #2 seed Wrightstown on Saturday. Wrightstown will be the host team.

Baseball: Late inning collapse seals Clippers fate

Sturgeon Bay's Jace Johnson and L-C's Owen Deprez both entered the 5th inning with no-hitters intact, but 3 hits and 2 errors in the bottom of the 5th gave the Spartans a 3-0 lead.

The Clipper defense completely disappeared in the 6th inning when L-C added 6 runs without the benefit of a hit, as 5 errors, 4 walks, 2 passed balls and a wild pitch contributed to the collapse. Johnson's solid effort had seen him yield a mere 3 hits and only 1 earned run.

Deprez with 7th inning relief from Ryan Routhieaux completed the L-C no-hitter, with Deprez walking 2 and striking out 13 in his 6 innings of work.

The opening round tournament defeat ends an extremely trying season for Sturgeon Bay, as 3 Clippers starters suffered season-ending injuries during the course of the 2021 campaign. Sturgeon Bay concludes the year with an 11-11 overall record, and a 4-4 Packerland Conference record.

Evening matchup will start Clippers girls soccer playoffs

Sturgeon Bay girls soccer will meet up with Clintonville for a home game in the WIAA playoffs on Thursday. The non-conference opponent Clintonville is looking for their first win of the season, while Sturgeon Bay finished with a 6-3 record in their conference. The two teams have yet to play each other this season. Sturgeon Bay has had an up and down two weeks, but is coming off a shutout win against Roncalli on Saturday. Thursday’s game begins at 7:00 PM.

Sturgeon Bay softball wins playoff opener

There will be more softball to be played for the Sturgeon Bay Clippers after topping Gillett/Suring in the opening round of the WIAA Playoffs on Wednesday at their home park 7-4.

Both teams traded runs in the first inning and Gillett/Suring took 2-1 lead in the fourth before the Clippers responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take control of the game for good in the bottom half of the inning. The Clippers would tack on a pair of runs in the sixth inning and stop a Gillett/Suring rally in the top half of the seventh to secure the win.

The Clippers will have the weekend off before facing top-seeded Kewaunee on the road.

Clippers' Anderson, Hodges win Packerland titles

Two Sturgeon Bay athletes captured three events during the Packerland Conference Track Championships on Monday in Peshtigo.

Cate Anderson won both hurdles events while Gordon Hodges won the pole vault event. The boys' team scored 61.5 points and the girls scored 107 points to finish in the top 4.

Girls Soccer: Clippers earn shutout

Sturgeon Bay withstood the outdoor heat and won their game with Roncalli by a final score of 2-0 on Saturday. In each of their last six games, they have been on the winning or losing end of a shutout. Sturgeon Bay moved their record to 4-6 with the Saturday win.

Baseball: Late inning dooms Clippers

Sturgeon Bay trailed Bonduel 3-2 going to the 7th inning on Saturday, but a pair of errors resulted in 4 unearned runs for the Bears, while the Clippers were handed 1 unearned run in the bottom of the 7th to create the 7-3 final score. A tight game saw Sturgeon Bay fall short with numerous scoring opportunities, leaving the bases loaded in both the 1st and 2nd innings, while stranding a total of 11 runners for the game. The Clippers outhit the Bears 6-5, but fell short defensively with 7 walks, 2 wild pitches, 2 passed balls and 3 errors.

Carter Henry led Sturgeon Bay's hitting with a 2-3 afternoon, which included an RBI single to tie the game 2-2 in the 3rd inning. Henry also contributed with a solid defensive performance at both 2nd base and 3rd base. Anthony Jennerjohn pitched the first 4 innings, while Jace Johnson came on to toss the final 3 innings, with Jennerjohn taking the loss. As the 5th seed in the Regional Tournament, Sturgeon Bay now travels to play the 4th seed Luxemburg-Casco at 4:30 pm on Thursday. The winner will face the unenviable task of going to Denmark the following Tuesday to face the no. 2 ranked Division 2 team in Wisconsin.

Soccer: Offensive struggles slow Clippers

Despite a strong defensive effort from Sturgeon Bay and goalkeeper Drew Starr, the Clippers could not put up points in Thursday’s loss to Sheboygan Falls. Starr collected 18 saves but the Clippers can rebound from the conference loss on Saturday. The Clippers face Roncalli, who comes into the game with a 4-3 overall record.

Drew Price Walk-Off HR Gives Sturgeon Bay Improbable Win Over NEW Lutheran

It started out as a fairly normal baseball game with New Lutheran leading Sturgeon Bay 4-1 going to the bottom of the 4th inning.

A 2-out 2-run single from Emmett Braschnewitz brought the Clippers even at 4 heading to the 5th inning. The wheels then fell off the Clipper bus when 4 walks, 2 hit batters and 4 Blazer hits saw Sturgeon Bay staring at an 11-4 deficit.

However things got interesting in the bottom of the 6th inning when Blazer pitchers walked 5 and hit a batter. Before the smoke cleared, a 2-run Braeden Haines single, followed by a Curt Meyer RBI single had the Clippers within 1 run at 11-10. NEW Lutheran added a run in the top of the 7th inning for a 12-10 lead, but considerably more drama was about to follow. After the first Sturgeon Bay hitter was retired in the bottom of the 7th inning, Carter Henry drew a walk and Emmett Braschnewitz was hit by a pitch. Drew Price then stepped to the plate and delivered his 3rd home run of the season over the left-center field fence for the improbable 13-12 come-from-behind victory.

An outstanding relief performance by Emmett Braschnewitz had kept the Clippers in the game. In his first mound appearance of the 2021 season, Emmett struck out 4 and walked 1 in his 2 2/3 innings of work, allowing 1 run on 1 hit to earn the victory.

The win allows Sturgeon Bay to finish with a Packerland Conference record of 4-4. The Clippers will finish their regular season with an 11 am Saturday home game against Bonduel, with the varsity game to be followed by a JV match-up with Bonduel.

Baseball: Clippers even record in big win

Fireworks came fast and early for Sturgeon Bay when they scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning against Peshtigo on Tuesday. The Clippers went on to win the game by a final score of 12-7. Getting a pair of RBIs were Abram Abeyta, Emmet Braschnewitz, Curt Meyer, and Carter Henry. Braeden Haines and Anthony Jennerjohn each hit .1000 in the game, as Jennerjohn had four hits and Haines had two, and drew two walks.

On the mound, Jace Johnson took the victory. Johnson went over four innings, giving up four runs, and earning six strikeouts. Sturgeon Bay moved to .500 on a couple accounts. The win improves the Clippers Packerland Conference record to 4-4 and their overall record to 9-9. Their next matchup will be a home one against Green Bay NEW Lutheran on Thursday, with a 5:00 PM first pitch.

Baseball: Sturgeon Bay tries to snap two streaks

When the Sturgeon Bay Clippers take the field against Peshtigo on Tuesday, they will be attempting to snap a four-game conference losing streak, and end Peshtigo’s three game conference winning streak. The two teams met on May 14th and Peshtigo won, 7-3. Tuesday’s matchup in Sturgeon Bay will begin at 5:00 PM.

Softball: Clippers host regular season finale Tuesday

Sturgeon Bay softball has a chance to close out their regular season with a big win on Tuesday. They take on the Packerland conference’s number two team, Peshtigo. Sturgeon Bay will try for their first win in three weeks, when they beat NEW Lutheran. For Peshtigo, their only blemish on their record is their loss to Kewaunee, which also decided the regular season conference title. Peshtigo routed Sturgeon Bay on May 13th, 15-0. The Clippers will host the game starting at 5:00 PM.

Girls soccer: Clippers return to play against Two Rivers

On Tuesday, the Sturgeon Bay Clippers girls soccer team will have their first game in a week after their Friday game with Valders was called off. The Clippers are set for a Tuesday battle with Two Rivers. The last time out for the Clippers was a 2-0 loss to Kiel, and they are 3-2 in their last five games. Their opponent, Two Rivers, will be playing for their first win of the season, most recently falling to Sevastopol/Gibraltar 11-0 on Tuesday. First touch for Tuesday’s game is scheduled for 4:30 PM in Sturgeon Bay.
