Two relay teams helped the Sturgeon Bay Clippers win a state championship in boys' track in 1959.

Sturgeon Bay took first place in the state meet with 21 points, outpacing Plymouth and Kimberly to capture the school's first and only title in the sport. Doug Reichard, Robert Peterson, Robert Schmidt, and Jim Anderson appeared on both of the title-winning relay teams, which combined to score 20 of the Clippers' 21 points. The 880 yds (today's modern 4 x 200m) relay ran a time 1:34.1 and completed the medley relay in 3:41.1. Roger Crass gave the Clippers the final point on the weekend, earning a fifth-place finish in the discus with a toss of 124 feet. Dan Austad also competed for the Clippers at the 1959 state track meet, participating in the broad jump event, and a couple of fouls away from earning his own individual title according to the Door County Advocate on June 2, 1959.

Seth Anderson, Adison Benzinger, Dylan Burk, Eli Dietzel, and Kolin Hunsader were all first year track athletes. The potential for success that this group of athletes possesses was substantial and had the coaches excited across the board. The success these guys have had in the past in other sports would have spilled over to track and helped reclaim the boys conference title. The “what if” about this group is very representative of the whole state of high school athletics during this tough time. They will be greatly missed.

Although starting with sprints early in his track career, David’s true talents lay in the mid-distance races. David’s experience as a varsity wrestler brought a quiet toughness to his competition. He was an integral member of the distance relays and would rise to any challenge. His goals this year were to help lead the boys distance squad and raise the bar to the expectations of a conference championship. He was able to be counted on to do his best and expected the same from others. His quiet leadership will be greatly missed.

This year would have CJ’s first returning year in boys track and field. He was a valuable point earner and teammate last year. CJ scored points throughout the year in the  long jump, 100, and 200 meter dash, but it was his contribution in the sprint relays that he took the most pride in. He earned 2nd place at the 2019 Packerland Conference meet in the 4 x 100 meter relay along with Storm Adams (jr), Ian Johanski (so), and  Amir Hansen. He also placed 4th in the 4 x 200 meter relay along with Storm Adams (jr), Caleb Mallette, and Andre Williams. CJ would have had an important leg in those relays again this season and his contributions will be greatly missed.

This was going to be Alex’s breakout year as a forward.  As a senior she was looking to contribute and lead her team to a 3rd Conference Championship and even a Regional Title.  To younger players she reminds them to “be a family”.  She also encourages them to remember the  team “has you back” and most importantly, “think like champions”.  Alex plans to study at NWTC this fall to prepare for a career in the medical field.  She has her goal set high:  “I’d like to be a Doctor some day”.

As a four year member of the Sturgeon Bay boys track & field team, Evian entered the season as a leader in the boys distance races. Evian’s contributions in his career have helped secure the boys conference championships. He was always consistent and led more so with actions than words. He was always looking forward to track season and talked about it specifically year round. His presence as a teammate will be greatly missed.

Only one boys cross country team on the peninsula has ever won the state championship and that came  20 years ago next fall.

Sturgeon Bay came away with the title with a score of 82, outpacing Amery's 115 and Shorewood's 122. This came with only one runner placing in the top 10 of qualified teams. Adam Aufdermauer ran a 16:53 to lead the Clippers, placing ninth out of qualified team runners and 25th overall. Three other runners would place in the top 50 overall with Tyler Herlache (16:56), Mike Yaniz (17:04), Dylan Roloff (17:10), and Aaron Kolterjahn (17:28) breaking 17:30 on the 5K course in Wisconsin Rapids. 

The state title was sandwiched between two other state meet runs by the Clippers, coming in 12th in 2000 and 3rd in 2002.

Team Results 

Madison is the definition of a punishing forward.  Her relentless power and determination over the ball enabled her to score and tire out defenders.  She led the Clippers in scoring  the past two years and was on track to make it three years as the scoring leader.  Madison saw this year’s team as the “breakout” team reaching sectional play and believed her class would lead the Girls’ Soccer Program to the next level.  She leaves this message for the younger players:  “Treat every game like it could be your last. Be there for each other.  You are not just a team, but a family and you may not be best friends outside of season: but when soccer season comes, those girls are not only your friends and teammates, but your sisters.  Be in the game physically and emotionally.  Never let someone tell you what you can and can’t do. Prove them all wrong.”   Madison plans to attend UW-Lacrosse studying physical therapy and athletic training.

Fletcher Hubbard’s role on the Sturgeon Bay boys Track and Field Team transformed each year as he learned how to master his skills as a hurdler and a long and triple jumper. Instrumental in helping the Clipper Boys Track team win 2 of 3 consecutive Conference Championships, Fletcher began his high school career earning the points for the team that often get overlooked because they are not the top two or three finishers in the Conference, but help the team amass points that other teams could not overcome. As a junior, Fletcher’s overall body strength and speed helped him become one of the top overall athletes in the conference in both the 110 High Hurdles and 300 Intermediate Hurdles, Long Jump and Triple Jump, placing in the top 4 in each of those events. As a senior, he was dedicated to earning a Conference Championship and eventually a run as a State Qualifier in the jumps and hurdles.

Fletcher’s energy and focus prior to competition served as an example to younger athletes to follow in preparation for competition. His lead by example demeanor as a student-athlete will truly be missed.

Entering High School as a freshman hurdler, expectations for D.J. to shine in the high school were high and he did not disappoint with outstanding performances in both the 110 High Hurdles and 300 Intermediate Hurdles. As a middle school athlete D.J. had dominated in the hurdles learning how to attack the hurdles with a sprinter's speed and mastering the “three step technique.” As a sophomore, D.J. shattered the Sturgeon Bay 110 High Hurdle record by posting a time of 15.15 at the Conference Meet and placing second, while also placing second in the 300 Intermediate Hurdles. Running behind the eventual State Champion Mitchell VanVooren last year, D.J. continued to work hard to master his skills as a hurdler and placed third in both hurdle races. In addition to his skills as a hurdler, D.J. gained points for the Clipper boys track team in helping them win two of three consecutive Conference Championships by scoring points in the high jump and being an integral part of the 4 X 400 M. Relay Team. Considered by many to be a state qualifier this year in the hurdles, his dedication to the team, leadership and energy will be greatly missed and his legacy will remain by the examples he set.

Gracen is SB’s second “Miss Door County” to play Clipper Soccer (her sister played for 4 years too and was a Miss Door County).  As a mid-fielder, her calmness over the ball and accurate passing helped control the midfield.  Gracen was proud of her Senior Class’s leadership and looked forward to a shot a 3rd Conference Championship and competing for a Regional Final.  Her advice to younger players, “Give it all you’ve got while you have the chance”.  She plans to attend the University of Wisconsin this fall majoring in Speech Pathology.

After transitioning from soccer to track this spring, McKenna was well on her way to continue her success as a Sturgeon Bay athlete. She showed dedication to practice and early on it was very evident that she would be a valuable member of the defending girls conference champs. She will be missed.

One of the teams most determined players, Claire’s intensity, drive and passion for the game was soccer in motion.  Claire’s selfless play and tremendous conditioning not only enable teammates to find success, but it also demonstrates her talent and leadership as a team Captain.  Her Team Goal for this season was to be Conference Champions for the 3^rd year in a row and win a Regional Championship.  Claire’s advice to her younger teammates:  “Work hard, be a Family and, most importantly, play hard every minute and you will find success…” .  Claire will attend the Milwaukee School of Art and Design with painting as her primary focus and a minor Art History.  She plans to obtain a Masters of Art History and eventually become a college professor.

After a very successful freshman year in track & field, Madelyn stepped away from the sport to pursue other interests. As a freshman hurdler placed 6th in both the 100 and 300-meter hurdles and 4th place as a member of the 4 x 200-meter relay. Madelyn was well on her way to picking up right where she left off and would have been a valuable member of the defending girls conference champs. She will be missed.

This dynamic leader led by example and played fearlessly.  Georgia’s tackles demonstrated her strength, speed and determination.  As a Captain, she supported her Coaches and Teammates implicitly and wanted to lead her team to a third consecutive Conference Championship.  Her advice to her younger Clipper Soccer Players:  “Play every game like it’s your last game and treat your teammates like family… leave mistakes behind you and then go fix it and win the ball back.”  Georgia views soccer as an opportunity to build teamwork skills and to advocate for strong women.  She is enrolled to attend the University of Minnesota next fall.

After moving to Sturgeon Bay just before her junior year in high school, Haley quickly demonstrated that she is a sprinter and a jumper, no doubt about it. In her first year, coaches found it difficult trying to determine exactly where to have her compete - she was just very good at everything. Her 2019 season was highlighted by her trip to the podium for her 5th place finish at the WIAA D2 State Track & Field Championships in LaCrosse last spring. At State she tied her personal record of 5’2” which was also the winning height. At the Packerland Conference Meet, Haley earned a 2nd place in high jump and a pair of 3rd place finishes in the 100 meter dash and the 4 x 400 meter relay along with Hailey DeGrave (sr), Kenzie Blau, and Kenzye Hasenjager. Haley had her sights set on high jump again this year along with the 100 meter dash and both sprint relays. She was almost always the last one to leave practice, getting in just a few more high jumps. Her dedication to practice and her “Let’s Get This” mentality will be missed next year.

Delaney is nothing more than an absolute pleasure to be around. Her personality and dedication to practice and the team make Delaney a true leader for the Sturgeon Bay Clippers. Delaney was set to have a great year as our leading shot put and discus thrower. After placing 5th in shot put and 8th in discus at Conference last year, Delaney had her sights on making it to Sectionals this year. She leads by example and is a friend to everyone. Her delightfulness and dedication will be greatly missed next year.

The following young men are senior athletes who are out for Sturgeon Bay baseball this spring, and the number of years they have played high school baseball:

Mason Propsom (4); Jake Schneider (4); Tanner Vanderleest (4); Austin Reeths (2); Gunnar Tebon (1).

All of these student-athletes are well prepared for the next step in their lives after graduating from high school. Although I have known these players to varying degrees, and for varying lengths of time, I can clearly state that all five of these guys are good examples of why I love coaching, and
hope to have coaching remain a part of my life going forward.

Only one of these young men has extensive varsity baseball experience. Jake Schneider was a 2nd team all-conference pitcher in 2018, and a 1st team all-conference pitcher in 2019. Jake was instrumental in Sturgeon Bay baseball winning Packerland Conference Co-Championships both of those years. One can only hope that the careers of these athletes do not end with their toes on the sidelines, but rather on a baseball diamond.

Hailey is Sturgeon Bay’s prominent mid-distance runner. She earned three 3rd place finishes at the 2019 Conference meet last year- in the 800 meter run, the 4 x 400 meter relay along with Haley Riechers (sr), Kenzie Blau, and Kenzye Hasenjager, and the 4 x 800 meter relay along with Ashley Alberts, Sophie Patton, and Morgan Reinhardt (jr). She worked hard throughout the off season especially on strength in order to improve as more of a long sprinter for competition this spring. Her number one goal was to make Sectionals this year in the 800 meter run after missing at Regionals last year by one place. In addition, she had her sights on competition in the 400 meter dash as well. She is a strong and determined runner who is always willing to do “whatever it takes” to help the team. Her leadership and “Team First” mentality will be greatly missed next year.

Twice was nice for the Sturgeon Bay boy's soccer program when they reclaimed the Gold ball in 2019.

The team traveled all over the place that season due to wet field conditions. Capital Credit Union Park in suburban Green Bay proved to be a second home for the Clippers while also providing what proved to be valuable experience playing on turf. Unlike their first championship just a few years earlier, this one had plenty of drama before Carson Dvorak ended a double overtime thriller with 2-1 victory over The Prairie School. It capped a 22-4-1 season for the Clippers.
