Stevenson gets action in Voyageurs' 2-2 draw

Former Clippers standout Jaden Stevenson got in the game late Thursday night for the Green Bay Voyageurs' 2-2 draw against the St. Louis Lions.

Stevenson got just about 15 minutes of action with a couple of touches to his credit. He was in the middle of the action late as a cross was deflected in the box, setting up Anthony Markanich for the tie-breaking goal in the 86th minute. The Voyageurs' lead would be short-lived as Charlie Checklace scored on a free kick in stoppage time to force the draw.

Local soccer fans still have two more chances to see Stevenson play this Saturday and Sunday tilts in Ashwaubenon at 7 p.m.

Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol wrestler sees growth in girls' sport

A Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol wrestler got to see first hand this summer the potential the girls' sport has in store for the future.

Julia Gregory just wrapped her stint as one of the 127-lb wrestlers for Team Wisconsin at the inaugural 14U Girls National Dual tournament in Tulsa, Okla. On a team that went 6-0 on the weekend, Gregory picked up a pair of wins via a technical fall and fall. The eighth grader has been honing her skills ever since the Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol middle school team ended its season earlier this year, filling her schedule with camps, practices, and tournaments. One of those tournaments saw her taking seventh place at the USA Wrestling Women's Nationals Meet. Girls wrestling has exploded in the last three decades, going from just over 100 kids in 1990 to around 15,000 this year. Gregory says girls wrestling is becoming a bigger deal.

After taking a little time off after her stints at national meets, Gregory hopes to be able to attend at least one wrestling camp a month before the middle school season kicks off again this winter. You can listen to the full interview online with this story.

Sturgeon Bay alum added to new Milwaukee soccer team

Wisconsin's newest soccer team will have some Sturgeon Bay flavor to it. In its third season, the Milwaukee Torrent announced it would Sturgeon Bay Clipper and Milwaukee Panther alum Reid Stevenson to its roster. Stevenson is the brother of current Green Bay Voyageurs member Jaden Stevenson. The Torrent will play its first NPSL game of the season when it hosts Miami United FC at Hart Park Stadium in Wauwatosa.

Berns coaches WBCA North All-Stars

Sturgeon Bay Clipper head manager John Berns coached his final games of the 2019 season over the weekend, leading the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association North All-Stars to a 1-2 record.

Berns and his fellow coaches from Valders had two days to work with the collection of all-stars made up of some of the best senior baseball players in Wisconsin.  He could not say enough about the entire experience.

As American Legion baseball continues this summer, Berns is already looking forward to his next campaign as the skipper for the Sturgeon Bay Clippers baseball team.
