Clipper boys sink season against Campbellsport on 103.3 The Clipper

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers could not defend the size of the Campbellsport Cougars, falling 76-48 Tuesday night on 103.3 The Clipper and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.

In the opening minutes, it was actually Sturgeon Bay delivering the first few punches with Calvin Richard leading the Clippers to a 6-2 lead. Campbellsport would begin to attack the inside of the paint, and would get Gannon Evers of Sturgeon Bay in serious foul trouble.

Sturgeon Bay would not be able to contain the Cougars with Evers on the bench with two fouls, as Gannon never saw the floor the rest of the first half. Mitchell McCarty would be the early scorer for Campbellsport, as he eclipsed 1000 points in his high school career with an and-one basket.

Before long the Cougars were suffocating the Clippers, leading 40-20 at the half lead by the duo of Mitchell McCarty and Ayden Fleischman.

Isaak Aune began connecting on shots in the second half, but the Clippers defense could not defend the outside shot. Kody Koltz came off of the bench, hitting 4 of 6 threes in the second half only, leading him to 12 points in the 76-48 win.

Calvin Richard was named Player of the Game in Sturgeon Bay’s losing efforts, scoring 13 points.

Sturgeon Bay finished their season 7-17 overall, and Campbellsport will pay a visit to Oostburg Friday night for the Regional Semifinals.

Sturgeon Bay looks to continue their season against Campbellsport on 103.3 The Clipper

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers will hit the road Tuesday night in the first round of the WIAA Division 3 Playoffs when they take on the Campbellsport Cougars.

Sturgeon Bay will enter the matchup against the Cougars with a 7-16 record overall, and they finished 4-12 in the Packerland conference. The last time the Clippers will have touched the court will have been last Friday, when they lost to the Kewaunee Storm 84-45. The Clippers struggled keeping the ball in their possession during that game, as the Storm were able to get 18 steals on Sturgeon Bay. Isaak Aune and Calvin Richard will have to be the leaders for the Clippers against Campbellsport, but the role players for Sturgeon Bay could be the once if the Clippers pull off an upset we look back at.

Campbellsport enters the game with a 17-6 record after a close loss to Saint Mary’s Springs 63-57 on Saturday. The Cougars could give the Clippers some trouble with their size as they pose two 6 foot 5 inch players that actually end up playing on the wing. The Cougars have not played any familiar opponents to the Clippers, which will give these teams fresh looks at each other and lead towards an unexpected game.

Gary Barta and Lucas Stephenson will be on the call from Campbellsport on 103.3 The Clipper, 96.7 WBDK HD-2, and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com. The pregame show will begin at 6:45 with the tip set for 7:00 in Campbellsport.

The Truckers have struggled as well since the new year, winning only four games since January 5th. The Truckers are led by Natalie Sunita, who averages 11.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game.

Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol's Lemieux late add to state field

As the pairings were announced on Sunday, the Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol wrestling team received a pleasant surprise.

Clippineers wrestler Tiani Lemieux (165 lbs) was placed in the girls' state wrestling field after taking second place in her sectional field. Originally, only each weight class' champion received a bid to the inaugural girls' state tournament. On Thursday, Lemieux will wrestle Cyriana Reinwald of Horicon (HORI). She joins Southern Door's Nora LeFevre and Hailey Veeser as the first three girls' state tournament participants in Door County history.

Sturgeon Bay boys set to honor seniors versus Vikings

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers will finish off their regular season Monday night at home when they face off against the Gibraltar Vikings for the Clippers senior night.

Sturgeon Bay has been on a bit of a skid in their last 10 games played, compiling a 3-7 record in that stretch of games. The Clippers did get a win their last time on the court, when they defeated the Two Rivers Raiders a week ago 69-53. The senior night festivities will see Isaak Aune, the leading scorer of the Clippers be honored in potentially his last game at home. The Clippers fell to the Vikings up in Gibraltar the last time the two teams matched up by a score of 67-58.

Gibraltar is coming off of a loss to the Southern Door Eagles 63-47. The absence of leading scorer and star Jake Schar will be one to watch heading into this matchup, as head coach Travis Ward is hopeful that he will return to the line-up before the end of the regular season this week. Whether that means Schar finds his way back to the lineup against the Clippers, or their home matchup against Algoma.

Two Clippineers qualify for state

Two Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol wrestlers will see their careers continue next weekend in Madison.

Zak Wrobel (170) and Ben Roman (285) punched their tickets to state with identical 3-2 records. Both Wrobel and Roman were able to wrestle their way into the second-place match.

Tiani Lemieux saw her season end, splitting her two matches on the day.

Clippers look to avoid winless regular season against Kewaunee

The last home game for the seniors of Sturgeon Bay will see them facing off against the Kewaunee Storm Thursday night.

The five seniors this season for the Clippers are headlined by the team's leading scorer, Autumn Rass. Rass averages 14.2 points per game, and makes her presence felt on the defensive side as well with four steals per game. The Clippers were given an 11 seed for the playoffs this year, and will travel to take on the Clintonville Truckers.

The Kewaunee Storm will be coming off a heartbreaking loss to the Southern Door Eagles back on Monday night as their last second attempt as a tie was waved off and no good. Jadelynn Kroll was the answer for the struggling Storm early in the season, as she has averages 14.8 points, including 31 in the win over Algoma on Saturday. The Storm will have a 10 seed in the WIAA playoffs, and face Menominee Indian in the first round with the winner playing Coleman.

Tip from Sturgeon Bay is set for 7:30 P.M.

Eagle girls top Storm

The Southern Door Eagles defeated the Kewaunee Storm in girls' Packerland Conference action Monday night.  The game came down to the wire, with the Eagles claiming a 58-56 win at Kewaunee.  Ashlyn Delfosse scored 18 points, and Allianna Dufek poured in 14 more to lead the Eagles to victory.  Southern Door (8-7, 13-10 overall) will now face NEW Lutheran/ Providence Academy in the regular season finale at home on Thursday with tip-off at 7:30 p.m.

Clippers boys handle Raiders

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers were on the road Monday night in a non-conference game against the Two Rivers Raiders.

The Clippers and Raiders traded baskets for the beginning of the game until the Clippers were able to get out to an 8-point lead in the middle of the 1st half. Two Rivers forced a few turnovers to have a small run of their own before Sturgeon Bay was able to extend the lead again, going into halftime up 9, 33-24. The start of the 2nd half began with a few baskets back and forth as Two Rivers switched into a high-pressure zone and was able to generate a few stops. The Clippers were able to get some good ball movement in the second half to extend their lead further to 19. The Pirates made a small run late in the second half to get the deficit down to 14 before the Clippers could finish the game with a 16-point lead, 69-53. Sturgeon Bay is back in action Monday at home in a conference game against Gibraltar.

Sturgeon Bay ski team wraps up season

On Saturday, the spirited Sturgeon Bay Ski and Snowboard Team wrapped up another fine season at Ski Brule, located in the territory formerly known as Upper Wisconsin.  The team's goals:  post their best times of the season, generate the most cowbell at the finish line, and convince some impressionable TJ Walker middle schoolers to join the team next year.  Largely, the day was a huge success!  The Clipper parents contributed more cowbell than at any of the previous meets, the middle schoolers were surely impressed, and five of the seven competitors posted their best times of the season!

Junior Tori Alger set the pace for the Clippers, finishing 13th overall in the meet and posting the Clippers' best times in both the Slalom and Giant Slalom.  Julia "Fancy Poles" Gregory had the best meet of her career, coming within one-tenth of a second of catching Tori in the Giant Slalom, while Freshmen Jordis Brilla and June VanLieshout continued their tradition of improving at basically the same rate and coming within seconds of each other's combined times overall.  Look for Brilla and VanLieshout to continue to push each other throughout their storied alpine skiing careers!

On the guys side, Junior Ben Stephens suffered a yard sale fall in the Giant Slalom but still set the pace in the Slalom and Super G.  Freshman Levi Ullman continued his quiet, consistent improvement and finished as the second fastest Clipper boy on the day, followed by Junior HA-vee-air Jzahn-DREEN.

For the season, Tori Alger posted the best finishes in three of the four meets, while Ben Stephens posted the best finish in the third meet of the season.  The two Juniors consistently set the pace for the remainder of the Clipper skiers.  Four of our Lady Clipper skiers pushed each other throughout the year and improved as a group with Jordis Brilla and June VanLieshout improving their times by 25%, first year Senior Lilly Cihlar improving by 23%, and Julia Gregory improving an impressive 21%.  Like the world-class skier that he is, HA-vee-air Jzahn-DREEN, known on the Peninsula as Xavier Jandrin, was consistently good throughout the year and was the heart and soul of the 9 passenger van, while Freshman Levi Ullman improved incrementally in each and every race.  Junior Maddie Propsom was only able to compete in one meet this year, but had a good showing in that race.  Similarly, snowboarder Tristan Brilla was only able to compete in one meet this year, but posted a 2nd place conference finish at that meet.  Freshman Yarrow Goettleman practiced with the team but suffered a season-ending injury on the basketball court and unfortunately could not compete in any conference meets.  We look forward to having both Brilla and Goettleman back at full strength next year!

Congratulations to these fine Sturgeon Bay student-athletes for another great year on the slopes!  As we always say, "School is important, but skiing is importanter."  (We don't really say that Mr. Nerby...just a joke!)

Clippers girls can't manage Vikings' big three; fall on 103.3 The Clipper

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers were not able to keep pace with the Gibraltar Vikings Monday night, falling 61-35 on 103.3 The Clipper.

The defense of the Vikings was the main focal point of the first half for Coach Devin Thomas, as Gibraltar used their length to clog up passing lanes and getting easy baskets at the other end. With that success, the Vikings jumped out to a 15-8 lead thanks to Andie Schar within the first five minutes of the game.

It would be more of the same the rest of the first half, with Dasha Yeltysheva trying to match the offensive output of Gibraltar. The success was not there with that plan, as the Vikings led 34-19 at the break thanks to Colleen Carlisle.

The second half would entail a big three of Gibraltar letting loose, as Mikala Gorham, Colleen Carlisle and Andie Schar would do most of the damage from directly underneath the basket and at the free throw line, as the lead would grow to as much as 30 at one point.

With a few minutes remaining, Autumn Rass began to emerge for the Clippers, but it was too little too late as Sturgeon Bay fell to 0-15 in the Packerland conference.

Coach Devin Thomas named senior Colleen Carlisle the player of the game in the win for senior night, as Carlisle scored a career high 13 points.

Clippers boys sail to Two Rivers

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers boys' basketball team will head out of conference for a make-up game against Two Rivers on Monday.

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers boys' basketball team will look to make it two wins in two days on Tuesday after nearly doubling up Sevastopol Monday night 69-35. After a back and forth start to the game, the Clippers were able to put together a run to end the half to take a 33-20 lead into the half. On Tuesday, the Clippers will face a Two Rivers team that was amidst a six-game losing streak when the game was originally scheduled. At the time, they had failed to reach 50 points in their last three contests. Orian Gauger registered 20 points in the Raiders' 70-45 loss to Kiel on February 3rd.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Sturgeon Bay girls look to avenge earlier loss to Vikings on 103.3 The Clipper

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers girls basketball team will take a trip up to Fish Creek to take on the Gibraltar Vikings on Monday night.

The Clippers will enter Monday’s game continuing their search for that first Packerland win dating back to last season, as they sit at 2-19 overall and 0-14 in the Packerland conference. Autumn Rass continues to be the rock for the Clippers offense, doing quite a bit of scoring this season, averaging just under 14 points per game this season. Sturgeon Bay will want to rebound the ball better than they did in the last matchup against Gibraltar, which was ultimately a 61-49 loss.

For the Gibraltar Vikings, their lone Packerland win so far was the win against the Clippers, but Gibraltar has found themselves in quite a few close matchups down the stretch of their season. Fresh off of a 61-30 win over Goodman/Pembine on Saturday, the Vikings will look to make it back to back wins for the first time this season on Monday. That will be on the shoulders of Andi Schar and Mikala Gorham, who led the way in the teams last matchup back on January 10th.

Gary Barta and Lucas Stephenson will be on the call from Fish Creek on 103.3 The Clipper, 96.7 WBDK HD-2, and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com. The pregame show is set for 7:15 P.M. with tipoff slated for 7:30 P.M.

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers girls' basketball team hope the wait for their first Packerland win will be over when Algoma comes to town Friday night.

The Clippers are winless since a 59-45 victory against Green Bay East on January 5th. They came close in their last game against NEW Lutheran, unable to close a 52-47 gap last week.

The Wolves saw a halftime lead disappear this week, falling to Southern Door 47-40. Ryley Zimmerman scored 15 points for the Wolves in the defeat, being the only Algoma player to reach double figures.

Sturgeon Bay ski team compete at Granite Peak

This past Thursday, the Sturgeon Bay Ski and Snowboard team had another great showing in the 4th Northern Conference meet of the season, this time at Granite Peak in Wausau.  The Clipper boys were led by Junior Ben Stephens, who finished 21st overall in the meet, and posted a top 20 performance in the Slalom event.  Freshman Levi Ullman had improved times across the board, and Junior Xavier Jandrin improved in the Giant Slalom and Super G, but had a rough start in the Slalom event that prevented him from having a banner day.

On the girls side, Junior Julia Gregory led the Clippers, finishing 20th overall including top 20 times in the Giant Slalom and the Super G!  Gregory also earned the nickname "Fancy Poles" from her coaches, but proved with her skiing that it's about more than the equipment.  Senior Lilly Cihlar posted her best times of the year, and recorded the best celebratory wipe-out in the terrain park that we may or may not have on video (and could make an appearance at the end-of-season party).  Other Clippers in action on Thursday were Junior Tori Alger, and Freshmen June VanLieshout and Jordis Brilla.  For the second straight week, the Clipper girls finished ahead of their bitter rivals, the Lady Hodags of Rhinelander.

The team has this week off and will return to action at the final conference meet of the season on February 11th at Ski Brule.  The T.J. Walker Middle School ski trip will also be held at Brule that day and rumor has it that Coach VanLieshout will be secretly timing 8th graders as they fly down Big Bear (hopefully not a WIAA recruiting violation)!

Clippers boys fall to Peshtigo at home

The Clippers brought the game back within reach and maintained that close margin through much of the second half. A late push fueled by good free throw shooting for the Bulldogs led them to the 60-50 victory. The Clippers are back in action on Monday against Sevastopol.

Sturgeon Bay girls' rally falls short against NEW Lutheran

The Sturgeon Bay girls' basketball team played at home versus NEW Lutheran last night in a tight contest.

It was a back-and-forth, exciting game throughout, and a late push by the Clippers narrowed the lead to one point with 20 seconds left, but strong free throw shooting allowed NEW to maintain their narrow lead, and the Clippers ended up losing 47-52.

The Clippers were led in scoring by Senior Autumn Rass, who had 18 points.

Clippers boys welcome Bulldogs

The Sturgeon Bay boys' basketball team hopes to snap a five-game losing streak when Peshtigo comes to town on Friday.

Isaak Aune led the Clippers with 22 points while Garrett Ulberg and Calvin Richard added 15 and 14 points, respectively, but it was not enough to slow down the Oconto Blue Devils in their last game, losing 72-62. Balanced scoring helped the Bulldogs squeeze past the Storm 56-54. Mason Doberstein led the way with 12 points as four players reached double figures, including 11 points by Kavin Kleikamp and Grant Bauman.

Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.

Clipper girls play third game in four days versus Blazers

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers girls basketball team will play their third game in four days when they take on the Green Bay NEW Lutheran/Providence Academy Blazers on Thursday night.

After falling 70-44 and 73-26 on Monday and Tuesday, the Clippers will hope to turn the tides and pick up their first conference win. Sturgeon Bay gave the Blazers a fight last time out back on December 6th, ultimately falling by a score of 59-45 led by Dasha Yeltysheva with 13 points. The Clippers will need to attack the boards better in this matchup after giving up 58 rebounds to the Blazers.

NEW Lutheran had 3 players in double figures in the game at home against the Clippers earlier in the season, but were ultimately led by Ebony Sinclair and her game high 22 rebounds. The Blazers fell to Kewaunee on Tuesday by a score of 53-41, which dropped them to 5-6 in the Packerland conference and 9-9 overall.

Tipoff from Sturgeon Bay is set for 7:30 P.M.
