Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol excited for Denamur's return

On a young wrestling team like Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol, it is always great to have some experience in the room. The team got just that this year when junior Ben Denamur returned to the mat a few weeks ago after injuries eliminated his sophomore campaign. Denamur already has three tournaments under his belt with the high water mark being a fourth-place finish at the Brillion Invitational a few weeks ago. Head coach Trevor Hasenjager says it is great seeing Denamur back.

Denamur and the Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol wrestling team will follow the likes of Kewaunee and Southern Door to Oshkosh this weekend for the Lourdes Academy’s On The Water Invitational.

Sturgeon Bay girls lose tight game at Peshtigo

The Sturgeon Bay High School girls basketball team did what it had to do on the defensive end to keep the game close Tuesday night against Peshtigo. The stingy Clippers defense allowed only 45 points to the Bulldogs but it was not enough as they could only mount 39 of their own on the offensive end of the court. Sarah Bridenhagen led all scorers with 17 points but did not have enough help from her supporting cast to squeeze out the victory. Sturgeon Bay takes the court again Friday against Sevastopol.

Sturgeon Bay's Burk signs with Upper Iowa

Dylan Burk has committed to play at Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa after helping lead the Clippers to a state championship last month. Burk has been selected to the All-Packerland Conference team the last two years as a defender, including the second team last season.

Sturgeon Bay girls pick up another victory

The Sturgeon Bay girls basketball team cooled off the Oconto Blue Devils Friday night, allowing a scant 11 points before halftime. Sturgeon Bay ended up carrying the game, 48-33. The Clippers held Oconto to 10 of 40 shooting. Oconto did themselves no favors from the charity stripe as sometimes the physical Clipper defense got too rough. The Blue Devils had 24 free throws in the game but left a lot of points on the table by making 10 of those.

Greta Meleen led the way with 16 points for the Clippers. Sturgeon Bay has almost matched their win total from last season already. Games against the likes of Sevastopol and Chilton look very winnable. This campaign could outdo 2018-2019 before the end of the month.

Sturgeon Bay boys consistent in win

The Sturgeon Bay High School boys basketball team sailed past Oconto Friday 76-53. It was a dynamic, yet consistent, effort from the Clippers. They netted 38 points in each half. Meanwhile, Sturgeon Bay was tenacious defensively early on, yielding only 23 points at the break. The Clippers were paced by a two-pronged attack from Jake Schneider and Gunnar Tebon. Tebon had 23 points while Schneider collected 21.

Sturgeon Bay dropped its opener against Kewaunee but has rolled since with convincing wins over NEW Lutheran and the Blue Devils. They return to the court as part of the Steve Randall Shootout in Oshkosh on Saturday the 21st.

Sturgeon Bay girls lose to Green Bay West

The Sturgeon Bay High School girls basketball team lost to Green Bay West on the road in a close, low-scoring game. The Clippers are now 2-4 overall after falling 41-37 on Tuesday night. Sturgeon Bay has shown impressive team defense this season. The Clippers have held four teams to under 50 points. In those games, the Clippers are 2-2. When Sturgeon Bay allows over 50, they have yet to be victorious

Sturgeon Bay girls even conference record

The Sturgeon Bay High School girls basketball team improved to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the Packerland Conference with a victory Friday night. The Clippers snuck by NEW Lutheran 39-37 on the road in Green Bay. Sturgeon Bay raced out to a 24-15 halftime lead and had to hold on down the stretch.

The Clippers were defined by the performance of Sarah Bridenhagen. She contributed 17 of the team’s 39 points. No other player registered more than six for Sturgeon Bay. Bridenhagen was matched on the other side by NEW Lutheran’s Bailey Scholz who also notched 17 points.

The Clippers return to the court on Tuesday against winless Green Bay West. The Wildcats have already lost to a Packerland squad. They fell to Algoma 46-43 on November 30th.

Youth basketball takes over Sturgeon Bay Saturday

The Northeast Wisconsin Boys Basketball League will be in Sturgeon Bay this Saturday to help support organized youth basketball.  The program has 43 schools from Northeastern Wisconsin participating and helps promote sportsmanship through competitive play.  John Lodl, one of the local organizers, says proceeds from the one-day basketball event helps support Sturgeon Bay boys youth basketball.  He says it’s an opportunity for people to watch some good hoops by teams from third-grade through 12th grade.

Teams are guaranteed two games that run from 8 am until about 5 pm with games played simultaneously in the high school and middle school gyms. Lodl adds that the organized basketball event that averages between 12 and 20 teams every year has raised over $3,000 for the Sturgeon Bay basketball programs.

Sturgeon Bay hosts out-of-state team

Sturgeon Bay will host a team from well outside of the area Monday night when only two local teams are in action.

The Clippers will look to build off of its 51-32 win over Lourdes Academy when it hosts Menominee (MI) this evening for 7 p.m. tip. The team has a wide range of contributors with Sarah Bridenhagen leading the team in scoring (18.0 ppg), Autumn Hacht in assists (3.0 apg), and Carley Wodack in rebounding (6.0 rpg).
