Sturgeon Bay looks to bounce back against Kiel

The Raiders won its first match of the season on Thursday with a 2-1 victory over Omro.

This is a matchup between the two best teams in the EWC/Packerland Conference. Last year, the Clippers won the regular season title and then ended the Raiders' hopes in the playoffs with a shoot-out victory in the sectional semifinal.

Clippers fall in close battle on 103.3 The Clipper

After cruising to a victory against the Green Bay West Wildcats last week, the Clippers were outmatched in a 21-14 loss to the Antigo Red Robins. The game was back and forth all night, and a few key plays from Antigo put it away at the end.

A touchdown by Antigo’s Mason Gray opened up the scoring on the night, as he scampered into the endzone for his first touchdown on the year. The 6’7” Fullback gave the Clippers trouble all night, but did most of his damage in this first quarter tonight. Running back Kordell Anderson told his teammates to not worry about the score, as the very next play he took a kickoff return to the house and a special teams error would make the game 7-6 Red Robins.

Antigo would once again score before the half, and a big call at the 9:43 minute mark in the second quarter would change everything for the Clippers. The refs would blow a play dead for forward progress, as the Clippers punched the ball away from the Antigo return man and had their hopes of getting the ball back stolen. That would fire up their defense though, as the score remained 14-6 going into the half.

Sturgeon Bay needed a score coming out of the half to stay in the game, and that is exactly what they did. Danny Lodl would roll left and find Patrick Haese in the back of the endzone to tie the game up after a successful 2 point conversion.

The game would remain deadlocked until late in the 4th Quarter when Antigo would answer for the final time and put the game away as Danny Lodl would throw an interception to Alex Schlieve to ice away the game.

The Player of the Game, as decided with the help of Sturgeon Bay head coach Carl Waterstreet was once again David Zuehlke.

Sturgeon Bay will open conference play next week as they travel to Bonduel.

Sturgeon Bay looks to win another on 103.3 The Clipper

After a huge win in Week One against the Wildcats of Green Bay West, the Clippers will once again welcome a non-conference team to Memorial Field as they will be taking on the Antigo Red Robins.

Sturgeon Bay (1-0), flexed their muscles in the first week of the season, with their win 41-7 over Green Bay West. The running back duo of David Zuehlke and Mason Sacotte proved their own on the field, running for a combined 3 touchdowns. Not only was their offense impressive, the stout defense of the Clippers forced 4 turnovers, 3 interceptions and a fumble. The Clippers will look to keep up the clean game they put together and carry it into the matchup against Antigo.

Antigo (0-1), took a loss to Wittenberg-Birnamwood in Week One 49-14. The Red Robins were down as much as 34-6 at the end of the first half, and could not get their running game going. Rushing the ball 38 times for a total of 15 yards. Coming off of a rough season last year, Antigo will look to get themselves in the win column against Sturgeon Bay.

Bryan Mazur and Gary Barta will be on the call on 103.3 The Clipper from Memorial Field with pregame beginning at 6:45 and kickoff set for 7:00 P.M.

Sturgeon Bay routs Green Bay West on 103.3 The Clipper

Sturgeon Bay bursted onto the scene back in 11-Player football week one, making a statement by blowing out the Wildcats of Green Bay West 41-7.

The Clippers took an early lead as Danny Lodl aired out a deep pass that connected with Wide Receiver Bryce Plzak on a 73 Yard touchdown that left two Wildcat defenders in the dust. It was not just all offense for the Clippers in the 1st half, as Caleb Plzak picked off Quarterback Ronald Schmocker, and David Zuehlke forced and recovered a fumble all in the first quarter.

Lodl would again air it out and find Patrick Haese for a 40 yard connection getting the Clippers down to the 7 yard line of the Wildcats. David Zuehlke would do the rest of the work from there, as he ran in one of his two first half touchdowns to make the game 21-0. Tagging on another rushing touchdown, this time by Mason Sacotte, the Clippers raced out to a 41-0 lead at halftime and never looked back.

The Wildcats showed fight in the second half, as backup quarterback Ricky Bell came in to replace an injured Ronald Schmocker. Bell ended up leading the Wildcats on a scoring drive towards the end of the third quarter, as he was able to find his receiver Ty Philips for a 40 yard touchdown. The Clippers would end up dominating the clock the entire second half, as a running clock was assessed coming out of the half.

The Player of the Game was David Zuehlke, with two rushing touchdowns and multiple tackles on defense.

Returning to 11-Player football Friday night will be the Sturgeon Bay Clippers, as they will be playing in their first non 8-Player game in three seasons. Waiting for them, will be a matchup with Green Bay West.

Sturgeon Bay, playing in an independent conference last season in the 8-Player league, went 2-6 against their scheduled opponents. Speaking to some players earlier in the season, they were excited for the opportunity to play 11-Player football again, and knew that Green Bay West was their first step in the season.

The Wildcats of Green Bay West are coming off of a difficult season last year, with a struggling record of 1-8, with their only win coming against their rivals Green Bay East. West had a multitude of players contribute to their scoring last season, and will be looking to start their year off right against the Clippers.

Quinn Struck and Gary Barta will be on the call from Memorial Field with the pregame show beginning at 6:45 and kickoff scheduled for 7:00 P.M.

The girls golf team got underway last week as they competed in the first fall competition in this school year. Sturgeon Bay joined Bonduel, Luxemburg-Casco, NEW Lutheran, Oconto and Oconto Falls at River Island Golf Course.

The combined swim team will hit the pool on the 20th of August in a Pentathlon at Marinette High School. Sturgeon Bay Co-op returns their lone state qualifier from last season in Christy Braun, and look to continue their success into this next season.

The Cross Country team began to gear up their season Monday in their first official practice. The first meet will be the Chief K Invitational held up in Gibraltar on August 25th.

The ever popular Boys Soccer team was back kicking things off on Monday as well as they look to make a state trip this year. The Clippers suffered a devastating loss on the doorstep of the state tournament last year as they lost to Sheboygan Christian/Sheboygan Lutheran 3-1 in the sectional finals. Clippers football eager for season start

The first stop in official preseason coverage was out to Memorial Field where the talk of the Packerland Conference so far in the preseason held their first official practice. Sturgeon Bay Football is coming off of a 2-6 season full of games that flashed potential, but the record does not matter with the flip to 11-Player Football. That is what has headlined the team so far this offseason, the transfer from the brief stint in 8-Player, back into the Packerland.

A big part of Sturgeon Bay’s offense is back from last season, and Mason Sacotte is set to have a huge part in the success that the Clippers will have. Sacotte, a junior, showed glimpses of what he has the opportunity to show this season, as he broke out in games against Thorp and Belmont last season as both a runner, and a receiving threat. With him appearing to be the Running Back for the Clippers this season after the graduation of senior Braeden Haines, he will have the opportunity to flash the skills that he has under new Head Coach Carl Waterstreet.

Mason seems confident that the team will transfer over well to the 11-Player season this year, and it felt that the whole team had a nice level of confidence in the type of team that they can put together.

David Zuehlke was one of those players that felt that the team has potential that has been waiting to come out. David being a senior has seen it all from the perspective of Sturgeon Bay Football. From not knowing if Sturgeon Bay will have a season in 2020, to moving the season to the spring, and playing 8-Player to switching to 11-Man, but it doesn’t seem to affect him, as he chooses to keep working and knows that everything will work out if he puts the effort in.

Rivalries after all, are what makes sports fun. The opportunity to bring back those rivalries for the players and even Coach Waterstreet is something that they might be the most excited about this season. The Sturgeon Bay players had the feel of confidence that might be what pushes them to have a season that might not be expected of a team that made a switch that most players have not experienced before.

Sturgeon Bay changes coaches; Waterstreet steps in

New Head Coach Carl Waterstreet has been put in charge of the Sturgeon Bay Football program after spending time as an assistant coach on previous head coach Jim Adams’ staff. Adams resigned from his position back in January, after being the active coach for years.

Waterstreet had worked closely with Coach Adams, and might even carry over some traits that he learned from his time under his wing. Whether it be practice styles, or a similar type of scheme, there is sure to be some sort of familiarity within the program.

Sturgeon Bay is going to be squaring off with the Wildcats of Green Bay West in Week 1. West went 1-8 last season, with their only win coming against their rivals Green Bay East. They were outscored in the FRCC-South 51-310 last season, only better than East.

Waterstreet has been an assistant at Sturgeon Bay for 4 years and is very excited to get started with the team he has on the field this season.

His players seem excited to be coached by him as well, as they have gone on record saying that he brings in a great winning philosophy that the players love to be around. Coach Waterstreet looks to have the right mindset and the ability to lead Sturgeon Bay back to its success, this time in 11-Player Football.

Clippers look to start fresh in 11-Player season

Numbers mean everything in life, but especially in sports. Sturgeon Bay football has finally gotten the numbers to return back to the Packerland Conference and 11-Player football and they are taking the opportunity and running with it.

Sturgeon Bay has been the talk of the conference so far this offseason, after rejoining 11-Player Football after a brief multi-year stint in 8-Player. Coach Jim Adams stepped down from his head coaching position in January, and Carl Waterstreet has officially taken over the job for the Clippers. Sturgeon Bay is coming off of a 2-6 season last year as an independent in 8-Player Football, but look to have a lot of potential back in the Packerland Conference this season.

Sturgeon Bay’s offense showed glimpses of reaching their full potential in wins over Williams Bay 62-6 and Bowler/Gresham 48-12 and will look to add to that this coming up season. David Zuehlke and Mason Sacotte are two players that could take huge jumps for Sturgeon Bay this season, and the team as a whole has a chance to burst onto the season in their first season back in the Packerland Conference.

Sturgeon Bay opens up their season Friday, August 19th, at home against Green Bay West. This will be Sturgeon Bay's first test back in the 11-Player level, and look to start it off with a win and prove that they belong where they are.
