Clippers girls soccer faces Lakeland Union

The Sturgeon Bay girls soccer team will take on Lakeland Union on Friday night in their season opener.

The Clippers are participating in the Notre Dame Quad this weekend, with the other game Friday night being the host Tritons taking on Luxemburg-Casco. Sturgeon Bay finished 7-7-2 last season and lost in the first round to New Holstein 3-0. The Clippers lost both of their EWC/Packerland All-Conference players from last season with Drew Starr and Emma Reichel graduating last year.

Lakeland comes out of the Great Northern Conference, and had major success last season. The Thunderbirds made the Division 3 state tournament last year with a 16-3-2 overall record. The team potentially returns four Great Northern All-Conference players, out of the nine total players making the team. This will be the opening game for both teams for the 2023 season.

The match is set for 7:00 P.M.

Winter Weather puts local ADs hard at work

The winter season has already made its presence felt on the spring season, and that means games and meets need to have decisions made, including rescheduling and canceling them. That is where the job of an Athletic Director comes into play.

24 events have been canceled or postponed throughout the Packerland conference so far this spring season, with field conditions being unplayable in most of the area. Sturgeon Bay’s AD Todd Meikle said that rescheduling is a big task at hand, but student safety is the biggest thing when it comes to when those games get played.

Southern Door’s Athletic Director Mark Jonas has also been put through the ringer when it comes to dealing with rescheduling, as the girls softball game set for Tuesday the 28th was canceled with just hours before the game was set to play.

Makeup games that include getting referees or umpires and more workers to run the games have become hard to come by, forcing games to become canceled instead of postponed to a later date.

The two Athletic Director’s jobs should become a bit easier within the next few weeks, as future forecasts show multiple days of sun and rain, with the only snow possibility being over the weekend.

Clippers' Walker captures Ripon Indoor win

Sturgeon Bay track's Espen Walker garnered his first win of the season as the team got the indoor season underway at the Ripon College Waters Meet on Thursday.

His leap of 5'10 in the high jump helped capture the team's only event win and the highest placement of any Sturgeon Bay track athlete. Chase Hasenjager (high jump), Julia Kurek (1600m run), and Ella Tarkowski (60m dash) all took posted top-five performances.

Clippers track team set for hopeful season

Sturgeon Bay’s track and field team had strong results last season, and will look to do it again this year under Head Coach Troy Hasenjager.

The Clippers girls track and field team finished first in the Packerland conference at the conference meet late in the season, including multiple first place finishes in events.

This season the Clippers have many returning student athletes that Coach Hasenjager has high expectations for. Cate Anderson is a returning senior that competed in the high hurdles at the last 2 seasons and we hope to make it 3. Andrea Wilke (pole vault), Espen Walker (high jump) and Craven Lautenbach, (triple jump) are all returning after competing in Sectionals last year.

Others that Coach Hasenjager believes could have breakout seasons include Xavier Jandrin in the pole vault, high jump and mid distance running. Chase Hasenjager in the high jump, long jump and running events such as the 4X200 relay and 4x400 relay. Patrick Haese in the long jump and sprinting events. Gannon Evers, Braden Evers and Seth Laughlin in both throwing events.Kordell Anderson in the sprints, relays and long jump. Nida Zukauskaite in the high jump and the hurdles. Julia Kurek and Julia Michalski in distance running events. Jade Tomberlin in high jump and mid distance. Zone Wienke is a freshman that will add depth to our sprinters and also long jump. Cady Carlson, Tiviana Andropolis, Ella Tarkowski and Claire Bohn will compete in the sprints and relays and Madelyn Wind in shot and discus.

The boys from Sturgeon Bay get their season started today in Ripon.

Clippers' Aune commits to Lakeland for Basketball and Golf

One of Sturgeon Bay’s best athletes in Isaak Aune has committed to Lakeland University to play Basketball and Golf.

Aune is fresh off of his stellar senior year in basketball where he averaged 17.3 points per game on 36.7 percent from three. Sturgeon Bay shaped their offense around the star guard, showing the impact and importance of Aune to the Clippers. Not only does Aune excel on the basketball court, he’s one of the best golfers in the Packerland conference.

With the golf season getting underway shortly, Aune gets ready for his senior season, where he looks to advance to the Sectional meet, where he was two strokes shy of last season.

Lakeland competes in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, which includes local schools like St. Norbert and Concordia. The Huskies went 13-11 overall in their basketball season this year.

Sturgeon Bay's Blau returns to Glory

Sturgeon Bay native Kenzie Blau will be playing close to home again this summer.

The Green Bay Glory announced that Blau would rejoin the team for their 2023 campaign. She is coming off a 2022 season for Carroll University where she registered one assist and seven shots on goal across 20 starts as a senior defender.

Last season, Blau played 250 minutes for the Glory while committing just one foul across seven games.
