Setting the record straight regarding athletic trainers

Sometimes the right decision is the most difficult decision. At times, athletic trainers have to make a decision to take a star athlete out of a game. While the decision may be unpopular, Door County Medical Center Athletic Trainer Alyssa Lee says she always keeps the student-athlete and their health as the only deciding factor.

During National Athletic Trainer Month, Alyssa Lee would like to set the record straight as to what an athletic trainer is and does.

Lee went to UW LaCrosse and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in athletic training and a Master of Science degree in clinical exercise physiology from UW River Falls.

She says seeing a student-athlete recover completely after a major injury and competing again is one of the most rewarding aspects of athletic training.

Lee and the entire team of Door County Medical Center athletic trainers are committed to keeping student-athletes safe, helping prevent injuries, and will do their best to make the right decision regarding injury or treatment, even when the decision may not be what a player, coach or parent may want in the middle of a big game, meet or competition.

Sturgeon Bay baseball trying to extend conference streak

Sturgeon Bay is trying to make it three consecutive Packerland Conference titles in a row for the 2019 season. The Clippers have been dominant and only lost a combined three conference games the last two years. The only thing that has eluded them has been playoff success as they've lost in the regionals in each postseason. That doesn't take away from how good Sturgeon Bay has been on the diamond. Their first game for the upcoming season is scheduled for April 1st when they travel to Marinette.

The answer to Sunday's trivia question was that Sturgeon Bay's active streak of baseball conference championships is at 2 years.

LAT/Emergency responder meet and greet

To better care for our athletes and the community, local Athletic Trainers and members of the Door County Emergency Response teams and their families are getting to know each other just a little bit better. In the case of an emergency, it is beneficial to know those responding, as familiarity can help alleviate some of the fears and anxieties the person having the emergency might be feeling.

The Door County Medical Center's Licensed Athletic Trainers are hosting a Meet and Greet with local Emergency Response teams and their families on March 27th, 6:30pm, at Sonny's Pizzeria in Sturgeon Bay.

Clipper girls soccer team getting ready for the season

The Sturgeon Bay girls soccer team’s season kicks off on April 2nd when they travel to Sheboygan Lutheran. The Clippers would like to repeat their success from last season when they won a Packerland championship by going undefeated in the conference. They probably did not get as far as they wanted to in the playoffs as their first game was a 1-0 loss at New Holstein. If the Clippers can repeat their playoff success from 2014 when they last won a regional championship that would make all the players and coaches happy.

That was the answer to Sunday’s trivia question which asked, “When was the last time the Sturgeon Bay girls soccer team won a regional championship?”

Sturgeon Bay track heads to Oconto falls for first meet

Replacing some great seniors will be key for Sturgeon Bay as their track competition kicks off Monday in Oconto Falls.

His teammates Brady Wodack (St. Norbert), Hayden Shefchik (UW-Eau Claire), and Luke Brinkman (UW-Eau Claire) all signed National Letters of Intent to run in college last spring.

Algoma and Gibraltar will join the Clippers for the indoor track meet in Oconto Falls with action beginning at  4:30 p.m.

Saturday is not a day of rest for hospital CEO

Door County Medical Center Chief Executive Officer Brian Stephens doesn't spend his Saturday mornings resting and recovering from a long work week. Instead, Stephens and his seventh-grade son Ben volunteer as coaches at the YMCA.

The six-week YMCA Youth Soccer Clinic started Saturday and elementary age children are encouraged to sign up as Saturday, March 16 is the last day to join.

Stephens said he and his son remember how former Clippers Soccer student-athletes like Will Kitchens and Ben Felhoffer used to come out and help at camps like this. The Stephens wanted to do the same for the next group of up and coming soccer players.
