Madsen rewriting record books after Brillion Invitational

His senior season is only a few weeks old, but Sturgeon Bay/Sevasopol wrestler Spencer Madsen is ensuring his name will be remembered for years to come.

Two records fell during his 5-0 run through the Brillion Invitational that saw him collect four pins and a technical fall en route to Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament accolades.

In his final match of the day, Madsen eclipsed Lucas Stephenson's record of 356 takedowns, a mark that has stood for over a decade. Stephenson held the mark since 2014, boasting a 73 takedown edge over the previous leader Cody Stephenson (2012).

Earlier in the day, Madsen passed Derek and Jonas Flok's old mark of 61 career pins. The Floks had held their marks for nearly two decades with Derek tying Jonas' 2005 mark in 2007.

Madsen will most likely break the Wins in a Career record next weekend at Green Bay Preble's invitational. Westosha Central, Kaukauna, Neenah, DC Everest, Pulaski, Chilton, Lomira, Menominee Indian, Mishicot, Ozaukee, Ripon, Waupaca, and Southern Door will also be on the mat when wrestling begins at 9:45 a.m.

SBS clipped by hosts in Brillion Invitational

Only their hosts finished in front of them at Saturday's Brillion Invitational as Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol wrestling took second place as a team.

SBS scored 197 points, five points behind the Lions for the top spot and 13 points in front of 3rd-place Green Bay United.

Nate Hasenjager (106) and Spencer Madsen (175) won their brackets while Anthony Estevez (3rd), Ray Johnson Jr. (3rd), Julian Langer (2nd), Harrison Schartner (2nd), and Patrick Shefchik (2nd) also finished in the Top 3 of their respective weight classes.

With four pins and a technical fall, Madsen earned some extra hardware as he was named the tournament's most outstanding wrestler. Madsen was able to take sole possession of the school's pin and takedown records.

Clippers Rout Eagles Friday Night On U-102.1

The early-season matchup between Sturgeon Bay and Southern Door in boys basketball was all Clippers, as they came away with a 76–40 victory Friday night on U102.1.

While both teams look much different than they have in years past, the Clippers have used the few extra games they have played this season to fine-tune their ship more effectively on this night. This was the Clippers’ sixth game, compared to the Eagles’ third.

The Clippers jumped out to an early lead behind the hot hand of Ben Ash, who dominated the entire first half. Even if he had been the only scorer for Sturgeon Bay, he still would have held the halftime lead. Ash scored 19 first-half points alone, compared to the Eagles’ 17 total team points. It took Lauden Berg several minutes to score the first eight points for the Eagles, and Southern Door trailed 40–17 at the halftime break.

The second half featured a more spread-out scoring effort for both squads, though it still favored Sturgeon Bay. The Clippers won the second half 36–23. Late in the game, both coaches sent full squads of substitutes onto the floor as the outcome had been decided well before the clock hit zeros.

Leading scorers for the Clippers were Ben Ash with 30 points, Jaxzen Bleck and Siggy Hansen with 10 each, and Rylan Ruenger with nine. Southern Door was led by Lauden Berg with 14 points, Ryker Lohrey added six, and Talon Mueller contributed five.

The Clippers now have a brief break before heading to Big Foot on December 30. The Eagles return to action Thursday, December 18, at home against Algoma. You can listen to that game live by joining Jacob Nate at 6:45 for the pregame show, followed by the 7:00 tipoff.

Clippers girls sneak past Eagles for first conference win

The Sturgeon Bay girls basketball team left Brussels Thursday night with their first Packerland Conference win of the season, beating Southern Door 33-32.

Head coach Rachel Miller applauded her team for the win, saying that "the Lady Clippers played with HEART, fought to the last second, and earned every bit of this win."

Regan Kasten led the way with 14 points, 10 of which came at the charity stripe. Prudence Goettelman chipped in seven points and Sophia Sternard sank back-to-back threes to add six points.

The Clippers return to action on Saturday when they visit Florence while the Eagles will wait until Tuesday to play again when they battle Algoma.

Clippers and Pioneers Meet in 'Stronger Together' Game on U102.1

When the Sturgeon Bay Clippers and Sevastopol Pioneers meet on the hardwood on Tuesday night in Sevastopol, there will be much more on everyone's minds than just a basketball game.

The teams face off on a night were the message of 'Stronger Together' a theme and a motto that the Pioneers have adhered to since an offseason youth camp over the summer.  During that camp, former Wisconsin star Brian Butch shared that his son, Blake, was once again dealing with a brain tumor.  In that very same moment there was a young Pioneer in the school who was dealing with a battle of their own.

That young Pioneer was Lucia Ramirez who is fighting Leukemia.  At that moment, the team committed to 'Stronger Together' being their team motto, and set Tuesday nights matchup between the Pioneers and Clippers as a night where these two neighboring communities to gather and raise awareness and funds to help fight childhood cancer.

The evening will center around a Packerland conference game in which the 2-2 Clippers head north to face the 3-1 Pioneers.  Each team is coming off Saturday afternoon losses.  The Clippers fell at home to Denmark 68-50. Sturgeon Bay led at the break 33-31 and pushed their lead to six in the first half at one point, but couldn't sustain it for both halves. The Pioneers on the other hand fell on the road to Green Bay Southwest 54-45. Andrew Wiesner led the Pioneers with 13 points while Zaul Valdivia added 11 and Bo Tanck chipped in eight points.

You will be able to hear the game with Jacob Nate taking you through the nights events starting with the 6:45 pregame show, and a 7:00PM topoff on U102.1 and NEW Radio Sports Network.

SBS' Madsen sets record in Kimberly Invite win

A new piece of gold came with a record as well for Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol's Spencer Madsen.

Madsen posted pins in three of his four matches to win first place at 175 pounds. He only needed one pin to take sole possession of first place on the all-time pin list, which now stands at Madsen's 63 pins with nearly a full season to go. Harry Schartner went 2-1 for the team's other top-3 performance.

On the girls' side, Tiani Lemieux was SBS' top performer with a second-place finish.

Clippers bit by Bulldogs

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers could not keep up with the offensive pace set by their visitors Thursday night as they lost to Peshtigo 59-32.

Head coach Zach Goblisch said that their defense led to good offense in the first half and got them into a good rhythm before foul trouble derailed their efforts. They went into the break down 33-18 and never recovered.

"Credit to Peshtigo as they got great looks and extended the lead from there, but for us, we have to look to fight through those stretches and find ways to adjust on both ends of the floor to get us back on track," Goblisch added.

Benjamin Ash led the Clippers with 15 points with Sam Fruzyna and Jaxzen Bleck each adding five points. The Bulldogs countered with a pair of 20-point performances from Dominik Baxter and Levi Hodgins.

The Clippers return to action Saturday with a non-conference matchup with Denmark at home.

Clippers boys' basketball hosting Bulldogs

The Sturgeon Bay boys’ basketball team is hosting Peshtigo this Thursday. The Bulldogs are coming off a victory, beating Crivitz 70-41. Starting the season with a 2-0 record, the Clippers are eager to maintain their winning momentum. In the Clippers' most recent outing, they beat Providence Academy 77-49. Sam Fruzyna led the team with 16 points. Rylan Ruenger followed with 12 points, while both Ben Ash and Jaxzen Bleck added 10 points apiece. Owen Starr contributed 9 points. After the game, Coach Goblisch said, "I thought our defensive pressure helped us generate turnovers and get out in transition, and that was a big key to us extending the lead in this game. On offense, I felt we had a balanced attack tonight that involved everyone on the floor. That led to a lot of guys contributing in the scoring column as well."
The tip-off is at 7:00 PM.

Big run by Peshtigo to open the game too much for Sturgeon Bay

Peshtigo came out firing Tuesday night, scoring the first 15 points of the game and never looking back in a dominant win over Sturgeon Bay.

The Bulldogs’ early burst quickly turned into full control, stretching the lead to 38-9 by halftime. Sturgeon Bay struggled to slow the pace or generate offense, and the game closed with a 66-19 final.

The Clippers will now turn their attention to Friday, where they'll battle Sevastopol at home in search of their first Packerland Conference win of the season. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

Sturgeon Bay boys spoil milestone game for Providence Academy

Sturgeon Bay will be the answer for Providence Academy athletics trivia for years to come, but they came out on the right side of the question with a 77-49 win on Monday night.

The Clippers were the visitors for the Paladins' first game as an independent varsity basketball program after years of playing alongside the crosstown NEW Lutheran Blazers. Thanks Owen Starr's late half flurry of scoring, the Clippers were able to take a 41-17 halftime lead. The Paladins showed fight to limit further damage after the break, but were still outscored in the frame 36-32.

The Clippers had 11 different players score a point in the game, including double figure efforts from Sam Fruzyna (16), Rylan Ruenger (12), Benjamin Ash (10), and Jaxzen Bleck (10). Isaiah Faulkner paced the Paladins with 28 points.

Head coach Zach Goblisch applauded his team's offense, but credited his defense with the lopsided victory after the game. "I thought our defensive pressure helped us generate turnovers and get out in transition, and that was a big key to us extending the lead in this game," Goblisch said. "On offense, I felt we had a balanced attack tonight that involved everyone on the floor. That led to a lot of guys contributing in the scoring column as well."

The Clippers return to the floor Thursday for their first Packerland Conference of the season when they host Peshtigo.

SBS wrestling hosts L-C, Preble, and FVL in opener

The Sturgeon Bay/ Sevastopol co-op wrestling team is hosting a quad this Tuesday at Sturgeon Bay High School.

The other schools participating are Fox Valley Lutheran, Green Bay Preble, and Luxemburg-Casco.

The top returning wrestlers for SBS are Spencer Madsen and Tiani LeMieux. Madsen is a UW-Parkside commit whose last season saw him taking 3rd in the WIAA D2 state tournament for 157 lbs, earning him Conference Wrestler of the Year and unanimous all-conference 1st team. LeMieux is also a returning 1st team all-conference wrestler; she took 2nd at the WIAA D2 state tournament at 138 lbs during the 2023-24 season.

The Spartans return several wrestlers from last year's sectional finalists. Carson Neubert finished last season on top of the Division 1 world with a state championship at 126 pounds. Kiley Georgel finished her year in second place. Joseph Jeanquart wrestled his way through consolation rounds to take sixth overall.

Matches begin at 5:00 PM.

The Clippers are looking to bounce back from their last outing, when they traveled to Hilbert and fell short 42-38.

Clippers traveling to face Paladins

The Sturgeon Bay boys’ basketball team is hitting the road this Monday as they are set to face Providence Academy.

The Clippers are coming off a 49-34 victory over Chilton. Leading the Clippers was Sam Fruzyna with 18 points. Ben Ash was right behind him with 15 points, and Sigmond Hansen had 9.

Clipper head coach Zach Goblisch said in post-game talks, “There was an energy about how we played from the start of the game that we carried through all 36 minutes that I was really impressed with. Our defensive intensity, hustle for loose balls and rebounds, and overall fight on both ends of the floor were crucial in getting the win tonight. I am looking forward to seeing this momentum carry over into the start of the season.”

The tip-off is at 7:00 PM.
