Sturgeon Bay High School Archives for 2020-01

No letdown for Sturgeon Bay boys

Coming off a huge home victory against Kewaunee High School to claim a tie at the top of the Packerland standings last Friday, Sturgeon Bay fans were on letdown alert. They didn’t have to worry. The Clipper boys won on the road, 60-49, against NEW Lutheran in Green Bay.

Sturgeon Bay had to withstand a game-high 27 points from NEW’s Marshal Bukowski for the win. Seventeen of Bukowski’s points came in the second half. The Clippers featured their normal one-two punch. Jake Schneider netted 21 points and Gunnar Tebon added 17.

Sturgeon Bay improves to 10-3 overall, 9-1 in the Packerland Conference. Their next game is Saturday at Oconto.

Door County Classic lives up to name

Over 20 teams from across the state and upper Michigan will converge on Sturgeon Bay this Saturday for the 13th Dirk Sorenson Door County Classic.

Freedom, Milwaukee Marshall, Two Rivers, Valders, Wrightstown are just some of the teams coming into Sturgeon Bay for the tournament, with some of the best wrestlers in the state in tow. Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol head coach Trevor Hasenjager says it is a nice tune-up for teams before WIAA regional tournament takes place two weeks later.

The Dirk Sorenson Door County Classic begins with weigh-ins at 6 a.m. Saturday.

Sturgeon Bay boys tied for first place

The Sturgeon Bay High School boys basketball team roared out of the gate in front of the home crowd Friday night. The Clippers put up 39 in the first half, on their way to a 74-59 victory over the Kewaunee Storm. Kewaunee had already played a road contest at another top tier Packerland team, Southern Door, earlier in the week. That was a one-point nail biter that may have led to a slow start. It is a potential reason why the defensive intensity just was not there for the Storm at the bell.

Sturgeon Bay was balanced offensively scoring 13 two-point baskets and 11 three-pointers. Jake Schneider had 22 and Gunner Tebon chipped in another 20 points. For Kewaunee, three players made it to double figures. Alex Rohr led the way with 15 points.

Sturgeon Bay is on the road their next two games. Tuesday, they play at NEW Lutheran in Green Bay. Kewaunee heads home to renew a rivalry with Algoma.

Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol sweeps duals

On Parent's Night, the Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol wrestling team were able to capture victories in their first and in their last home duals of the season.

Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol opened up their evening with a 42-0 win over Oconto with Kellen Hacht and Nick West earning pins in the only contested matches of the dual. The team honored all of the wrestlers but gave special recognition to David Condra, the team's only senior.

In the second set of duals, Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol beat Peshtigo 30-24, but lost two of their three contested matches. Katelyn Lewis and  Klimek picked up pins for the visiting Bulldogs. Hacht picked up the lone victory with a second period pin. Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol will wrestle next at their own tournament on February 1st.

Sturgeon Bay boys win to set up showdown

The Sturgeon Bay High School boys basketball team shot over 50 percent from the field and sailed to a win against Gibraltar Tuesday night, 71-44. The Clippers’ unselfish play continues with four players scoring in double digits and another adding eight. Jake Schneider had a game-high 17. Gibraltar wasn’t too shabby from the floor themselves at 47 percent. Guard Luke Steebs led the way with 16 points.

Sturgeon Bay has one loss in the conference, and that is to the team they will face on Friday night. Sturgeon Bay-Kewaunee should be a dandy and you can bet the gym on Michigan Street will be hopping. Gibraltar’s next contest finds them at Algoma Friday.

Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol wrestling looks for growth spurt

Struggling to fill full roster now, Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol head wrestling coach Trevor Hasenjager likes what he is seeing from his younger wrestlers. Two weeks ago the Clippineers won the majority of the contested match in an overall dual meet loss to Southern Door due to forfeits. Ahead of that dual, the gym was packed with parents watching well over 20 matches at the middle school level. Hasenjager says he likes what he has seen so far.

Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol hosts Southern Door, Peshtigo, and Oconto for a double dual this Thursday night at 7 p.m. 104.1 WRLU will carry the Eagles matches live but will cut away with updates from the pair of Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol matches.

Smooth sailing Friday for Clipper boys

The Sturgeon Bay High School boys basketball team put up a season-high 88 points Friday at Algoma in an easy victory. Four Clipper players scored at least 15 making the game Sturgeon Bay’s most balanced effort of the 2019-2020 campaign. Jake Schneider led all scorers with 21 points. Sturgeon Bay connected on 12 three-point attempts.

Algoma got their first win of the season earlier this week but it was back to business as usual against one of the Packerland’s best teams. Carter Zimmerman led the Wolves with 14 points.

Sturgeon Bay is back on the court tonight in a nonconference matchup against Seymour. The Thunder have roared to an 11-0 start this year. Their average margin of victory in conference games is 30 points. The Thunder routinely put up 80 so Sturgeon Bay will need to limit turnovers, keep Seymour from running in transition, and force them to score out of their half-court offense. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday.

Algoma matches up with the Northeast Wisconsin Christian Home School squad Monday.

Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol places two at New London

Ben Denamur took seventh and Nick West took sixth to lead Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol to a 15th place finish at the New London Cutler Classic on Saturday.

Each wrestler grabbed one contested victory with byes helping with their final placement. On the JV side of the tournament Kellen Hacht (138) and Ben Roman (285) went a perfect 3-0 to win their brackets.

Sturgeon Bay boys shock Southern Door

The cannons were active on Tuesday as Sturgeon Bay High School boys basketball fired a warning shot across the bow of its Packerland competition. The Clippers surprised Southern Door in overtime 66-59. Don’t look now but Sturgeon Bay is 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference, good enough for second place. Game one is done but the rest of the week doesn’t get much easier for the Clippers. They host Peshtigo on Thursday and play Notre Dame at the Kress Center on the campus of the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay Saturday.

Southern Door faces Algoma at home on Saturday in their next matchup.
