Sturgeon Bay High School Archives for 2024-11

Clipper boys dominate Tigers

The Sturgeon Bay Clipper boys opened the basketball season with an impressive 87-56 win over the Chilton Tigers Tuesday night.

The Clippers were led by Jackson Starr who poured in 33 points.  Braden Evers tallied 16 more as the Clippers controlled the game and had four players score in double figures.

Clipper Coach Zach Goblisch said after the game, "Overall, I was really proud of our offensive exectution tonight.  The ball moved around well and we were able to get a lot of different guys involved.  It was a great effort to start the season and is something we look to continue to build off of after the Thanksgiving Break."

The Clippers return to the floor on Tuesday, December 3 against Green Bay Southwest for their first home game of the 2024-25 season.

Lady Clippers burned by Blazers

The Sturgeon Bay Lady Clippers and NEW Lutheran opened up Packerland Conference play on Tuesday night.  Sturgeon Bay trailed 21-13 at halftime and struggled offensively missing a number of shots.  The Clippers played a bit better offensively in the second half but gave up too many scores down low and second shots falling 53-39.

NEW was led by A. Meerstein with 15, with other scorers E. Laatsch with 13, and I. Beaumont with 12.

Cady Carlson was the Clippers' leading scorer with 14 points--10 in the second half.  Dasha Yeltysheva had 12, Regan Kasten had 10, and Yarrow Goettelman had 3.

Sturgeon Bay continues conference action next Tuesday at Oconto and play next Friday here at home vs. Peshtigo.

Clippers girls lose to Raiders

A buzzer beater provided the momentum Two Rivers needed to get past Sturgeon Bay Thursday night 37-29.

The two teams were knotted up just before halftime when the Raiders registered the go-ahead bucket. The Clippers had a rough night from the field with only five made field goals, but they were able to hang with the Raiders thanks to a strong 19-24 performance from the free-throw line.

The Clippers were led by Dasha Yeltysheva with 17 points.  Regan Kasten had 7 points, all on free throws.  Yarrow Goettelman had 3 points and Cady Carlson 2.

Two Rivers was led by Kaylee Jensen with 12 points, Vayda Sonnenberg had 9 points, Jordyn Kulpa and Rylee Timm each contributed 7, and Allie Gallagher had 2.

Head coach Dan Tjernagel was pleased with the effort, especially on the defensive side of the ball. " We had to navigate first-half foul trouble, so we need to learn from that," Tjernagel said. "We also need to shoot the ball better from the floor to put ourselves in position to win ball games."

The Clippers are back in action next Tuesday against NEW Lutheran.

Clipper girls fall to Chilton

In the first ball game of our 2024-2025 campaign we fell to Chilton 40-59.

Chilton's Adahlyn Hoerl (and division one recruit) had 35 points.  Their next leading scorer had 9.  Last year we were down 30 at halftime and lost 41-80 at Chilton.

Dasha Yeltysheva led the Clippers with 15 points.  Cady Carlson had 9.  Regan Kasten and Yarrow Goettelman each added six.  Cora Frangipane and Gabi Tjernagel each contributed two points.

It was a two-point game at 16-14 in the first half before Chilton went on a run to build up a lead, then Sturgeon Bay got a bit closer prior to the half.  The Clippers came out strong in the second half getting the lead down to about 11 at one point.

Clipper Coach Dan TJernagel said after the game, "Overall, I am very proud of the improvement our ladies continue to show and look forward to this kind of effort in future games".

Sturgeon Bay is back in action next at Two Rivers on Thursday evening.  Last year after trailing at the half, the Clippers came back to tie it in regulation, then went on to win in overtime 46-39.

Sturgeon Bay soccer season ends at Saint Mary Catholic

The Clippers’ soccer season ended on Saturday with a 0-4 loss to Kiel in the sectional finals.

Sturgeon Bay found themselves in a hole early on after giving up a penalty kick just four minutes into the match after an unlucky bounce lead to a foul in the box. Emerson Sitzman scored on the kick.

The Clippers would hold the score at 0-1 until 33 seconds into the second half when Emerson Sitzman would find the net again. Shortly after, Heller would score in the 44th minute and then Koen Sitzman would add another bringing the score to 4-0.

The Clippers need to be commended on another great season and winning their 16th in a row regional title this year.

Clippers battle Raiders in rematch for state on NRSN

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers soccer team has a chance to return to state on Saturday, but they will have to avenge an earlier-season loss when they play Kiel at St. Mary Catholic.

Both teams have cruised their competition to earn a date with each other in the sectional final. An own goal remains the lone blemish of the Clippers' tournament resume, beating New Holstein (9-0), St. Mary Catholic (6-1), and Gibraltar/Sevastopol (4-0) along the way. The Raiders also posted a pair of clean sheets on their way to St. Mary Catholic, beating Peshtigo (8-0) and Clintonville (3-0) before toppling Lourdes Academy/Valley Christian 3-1 on Thursday.

The two teams met on August 27th, with the Raiders securing the 2-0 win behind goals from Trevin Heller and Emerson Sitzman.

Bryan Mazur and Peter Kerwin will have the call tentatively on U-102.1 beginning at 12:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the first touch at 1 p.m.

Clippers advance to sectional championship over United on U-102.1

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers soccer team is one step closer to a return to the state tournament in Milwaukee after defeating conference rival Gibraltar/Sevastopol 4-0 at Clark Field Thursday night.

Three different Wienkes scored in the match with Daniel Wienke (26th minute) and Zone Wienke (32nd) stacking a 2-0 advantage over the United by halftime. Meanwhile, the Clippers limited the United's offensive chances all night long as they made climbing the 2-0 hill hard if not impossible. The Clippers put the match out of reach late with tallies from Simon Downey (56th minute) and Kemal Wienke (73rd minute).

The Clippers will try to avenge an early season loss to Kiel when they battle them at St. Mary Catholic at 1 p.m. The match will be carried live tentatively on U-102.1, but follow the NEW Radio Sports Network for updated broadcast details.
