Clipper baseball travels to rival Eagles on U-102.1

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers baseball team will look to pull one last upset in Packerland Conference action when they travel to Southern Door to take on the Eagles on U-102.1.

Sturgeon Bay has been a team of ups and downs throughout the season, and Saturday was an example of that. The Clippers fell 13-0 and 9-5 in two games against the Green Bay Southwest Trojans, and have lost four straight games and eight of their last ten games they have played. Sturgeon Bay will look to break those trends against the Eagles, where their seniors will play one last regular season game.

Southern Door bounced back from their struggles against Kewaunee by sweeping the NEW Lutheran/Providence Acadeny Blazers in two games by two different outcomes. The Eagles won the first game 17-0 in a game that was shortened due to the mercy run rule. Southern Door would come back and narrowly beat NEW Lutheran 8-7 in six innings as the game was shortened due to darkness with the Eagles ahead.

Gary Barta and Reece Robillard will be on the call from Southern Door beginning at 4:15 p.m. with the pregame show and first pitch set for 4:30 p.m. on U-102.1 and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com between the Eagles and the Clippers.

Clippers baseball loses seesaw affair to Trojans

A four-run third run briefly gave the Sturgeon Bay Clippers the hopes of stealing a win in Green Bay Saturday, instead falling 9-5 to Southwest.

The Clippers gave up their own big inning in the first inning after scoring the game's first run on an RBI groundout by Brody Kollath. Two hits and two errors led to four runs for the Trojans to make 4-1 after the first inning. The Trojans would tack on an insurance run in the second inning before the Clippers erupted for four runs in the third inning. They did it the patient way though as they scored on a passed ball and three bases-loaded walks to tie the game at five. The Trojans would not lament, score the eventual game-winner in the bottom half of the frame courtesy of a passed ball and three more times in the fifth inning.

Bryce Plzak led the way with three hits and two runs scored while Kollath got two RBI. The Clippers used three pitchers on the day, giving up nine runs (5 ER) while striking out eight and scattering seven hits.

Clippers baseball to face Southwest Saturday

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers baseball team will play a rare non-conference doubleheader against Green Bay Southwest on Saturday, ahead of their final conference matchup with Southern Door.

The Clippers have had an up and down season throughout the year, as they floated around .500 for most of the season. With their overall record sitting at 8-11 and their Packerland record at 5-9, Sturgeon Bay will look to end their season strong with four games remaining. The Clippers received the eleven seed in the Division 2 playoffs, and will have to travel to Shawano for the opening round.

Green Bay Southwest has not had the best of seasons as well, as they enter the matchup with Sturgeon Bay at a 5-16 record and 4-13 in the Fox River Classic Conference. The Trojans and the rest of the division one teams are still waiting for their seeds to be released for the postseason.

First pitch from Memorial Field is set for 11 a.m.

The Clippers scored their lone run in the third inning when Regan Kasten followed up an Annika Schoeneman with RBI groundout. The Vikings were led by Hunter Romauld, who scored three runs and had three hits. Five other players had multi-hit games.

Clippers softball open up WIAA regional with Valders

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers softball team will look to travel on the road and take a game in the WIAA playoffs when they play visitors to the Valders Vikings in the first round of the postseason.

Sturgeon Bay has begun to find some footing towards the end of the season, splitting the doubleheader with NEW Lutheran/Providence Academy and acquiring two other wins in the span of a week to give the Clippers some positive outcomes. The Clippers and Vikings have two common opponents between the two teams, in Roncalli and Kewaunee. Valders defeated Roncalli twice, 15-7 and 7-1 whereas the Clippers fell 16-1. The Vikings split two games with Kewaunee 5-4 and 3-1 and Sturgeon Bay was blanked by the Storm 15-0 and 10-0.

The Algoma Wolves took two games from their southern rivals on Monday, nipping Kewaunee 5-4 before beating them 17-3 in game two. The Wolves would chip away the rest of the game until Jadyn Nells delivered the walk-off single in the seventh to take the game. Clippers baseball extends lead, beats Bulldogs

It was worth the wait for the Sturgeon Bay Clippers baseball team as they expanded on their 3-2 suspended lead to beat Peshtigo 9-2 Friday evening.

The Clippers delivered their blow in the fourth inning when Bryce Plzak doubled home one run his brother Caleb singled him in. A Curt Meyer RBI double and a Brody Kollath score on a passed ball later turned a close game into a journey toward a blowout. Danny Lodl singled home Kollath and Plzak to cap off the scoring for the Clippers.

Kollath picks up the win for the Clippers, who came back from the suspended game to finish off the contest, allowing five hits and two runs across seven innings while striking out six. "I was pleased with how we came out tonight. It was a tough situation to get on a bus and play only 4 innings but we were sharp. Brody Kollath pitched great, and our bats immediately gave us a cushion," said Coach Neal Henrigillis.

Clippers baseball looks to bounce back against Peshtigo

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers will not have much time to lick their wounds before playing the Peshtigo Bulldogs on the road.

The Clippers were outscored by 19 runs on Thursday as they lost both ends of a doubleheader to Algoma 16-7 and 15-5 (five innings). In game one, Brody Kallath, Curt Meyer, Bryce Plzak, and Gavin Fernandez all had multi-hit games. Meyer did the most damage, registering one of the Clippers' two extra-base hits while driving in three runs. Danny Lodl drove in two runs as he went 1-2 on the day. In game two, Emmett Braschnewitz would score on an error while Garrett Ulburg's RBI single and Cole Frangipane's two-RBI double would take larger bites out of the deficit that had exploded to double-digits. Meyer would hit an RBI single in the fifth, but a single run in the frame was not enough to prevent the mercy rule from going into effect. The four-game losing skid comes after a five-game winning streak. "Tonight was a rough night for us as a club. We couldn't seem to keep anything going in the right direction," head coach Neal Henrigrillis said afterward. "We need to regroup as there are big conference games coming up down the stretch against Gibraltar and Southern Door. In addition, we want to build good momentum going into the playoffs."

The Bulldogs snapped a four-game losing streak with its opening-game win against Sturgeon Bay Tuesday. While they waited to finish off their game against the Clippers down 3-2, they lost to Little Chute 6-1 on Thursday.

The game will resume at 4:30 p.m.

Sturgeon Bay battles Peshtigo on baseball diamond

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers baseball team looks to forget its 16-0 loss to Chilton and get back to its winning ways on Tuesday when it plays two games at Peshtigo Tuesday.

The Clippers' loss to the Tigers snapped a five-game winning streak, which included four conference wins. Following their weekend split, head coach Neal Henrigillis said, "There were two sides of the coin today. We played very well in the first game against Manawa, however, we weren't quite ready for Chilton. However, they are one of the best Division 2 teams in the state and they showed it right from the get go. It was a good test for us. That Chilton game will allow us to regroup and get better going forward."

Clippers softball looks for first conference win against Gibraltar

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers softball team and the Gibraltar Vikings softball team will both be looking for their first conference win when they square off with each other on Friday afternoon for a doubleheader.

The lone win for the Clippers this season comes against Elcho by a 19-9 score. In Packerland Conference play, Sturgeon Bay has been outscored by their opponents 14-92, including 11-0 and 17-2 losses to the Eagles of Southern Door the last time the Clippers played. Sturgeon Bay won the lone matchup of last season between the two teams, winning 22-0.

Gibraltar, much like the Clippers, have struggled to begin the season. The Vikings have been held to three runs or less in eight of their nine games played this season, the only exception being a 15-9 loss to Sheboygan Lutheran. Gibraltar will look to bring that offensive output to Sturgeon Bay on Friday as they look for their first win of the season.
