Clippers trounce Zephyrs for regional title on U-102.1

Just as the colors of the leaves turn every fall, regional titles end up in the trophy case of the Sturgeon Bay soccer team.

The Clippers beat visiting St. Mary Catholic 6-1 Saturday night at Clark Field. Kayden Klotz led the Clippers offensively with a hat trick. Will Estes, Finn Stevenson, and Ben Denamur all chipped in their own tallies in the win. The lone score for the Zephyrs was an own goal by Sturgeon Bay less than 90 seconds into the second half.

The win sets up a third matchup against Gibraltar/Sevastopol on Thursday night at Clark Field. The game will be broadcast on U-102.1 with Bryan Mazur and Peter Kerwin on the call.

Sturgeon Bay, St. Mary Catholic clash on U-102.1

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers look to keep their regional title streak intact on Saturday when they welcome St. Mary Catholic to Clark Field under the lights.

The Clippers punched their ticket Thursday night with a 9-0 win over New Holstein in Sturgeon Bay. The Clippers would have a commanding lead at the half of 8-0. Scorers were Zone Weinke (2), Stevenson (2), Jaylen Reynolds (2), Kayden Klotz (1), and Cole Nessinger (1). Justin Gutierrez added the final goal of the game in the 49th minute.

The Zephyrs route to the regional final has seen them answer a three-match skid with a positive steak, winning two in a row and collecting a draw along the way. They snipped Howards Grove/ELG 2-1 in their last match.

Bryan Mazur and Peter Kerwin will have the call on U-102.1 and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the opening touch at 7 p.m.

Clipper's football season ends 64-18 in Wrightstown on U-102.1

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers 2024 football season ended Friday night on U102.1 at the hands of the Wrightstown Tigers by a score of 64-18. The Clippers kept things close in the first quarter, entering the second quarter with a 7-3 score. The Tigers, however, took a 50-10 lead into the half.

The teams combined for seven touchdowns in the second quarter, but sadly, only one was scored by the Clippers. That came on a one-play, 65-yard touchdown drive when Caleb Plzak pitched the ball to Patrick Haese, who in turn launched the ball downfield into the hands of Bryce Plzak, who had gotten deep behind the Tigers' defense. The Tigers' 6 second-quarter touchdowns all came on the ground, 4 of which were run by Aiden Humphreys.

The final touchdown of the Clippers' season came in the third quarter when Caleb Plzak found his brother Bryce one last time in their Clippers gear for both the touchdown and a two-point conversion.

The Clippers season ends with a final record of 3-7. Wrightstown will host Southern Door in level 2 of the WIAA playoffs.

Clippers soccer advances to Regional Finals with win over Huskies on U-102.1

It was a short night for the Sturgeon Bay soccer team as they bested the New Holstein Huskies 9-0 Thursday evening at Clark Field.

The night started with a beautiful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner from Sturgeon Bay High School's own Ashlynn Paulsen, and it was just moments later that Zone Weinke put the Clippers on the scoring sheet just 28 seconds into the match with assistance from Finn Stevenson.

Clippers face Tigers in playoff opener on U-102.1

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers open their WIAA Playoff Run with their tallest task of the season, playing on the road at Wrightstown Friday night.

The Clippers' three wins in conference play helped them slide into the playoffs as the lowest seed in their region. The Clippers have been streaky all season long, ending the year with a four-game losing streak after post three straight victories in September. Caleb Plzak threw for over 1100 yards behind center as the quarterback, while Patrick Haese led the team in rushing (654 yards) and second in receiving (166 yards).

The Tigers were one of two teams from the North Eastern Conference to play at Camp Randall Stadium last year, losing to Aquinas in the title game. They are aiming at a return to Madison thanks to an 8-1 mark. After a close loss to Freedom three weeks ago, they toppled Denmark and New London by a combined score of 71-7.

Jacob Nate will have the call on U-102.1 and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the kickoff at 7 p.m.

Clippers soccer face Huskies in WIAA opener on U-102.1

Sturgeon Bay begins its road to Milwaukee on Thursday when it welcomes New Holstein for the WIAA Soccer Tournament Regional Semifinals.

After struggling against non-conference opponents for much of the season as they battled teams from bigger schools, the Clippers humbled the Seymour Thunder by a 4-0 score last Friday. Sophomore Finn Stevenson had a hat-trick (8th, 18th, 31st minute) to lead the Clippers in scoring. The win elevated the Clippers to 13-5-1 on the season, which includes a 10-0 mark in the Packerland Conference.

On Tuesday, the Huskies punched their ticket to the semifinals with a 3-0 win over Gresham/Bowler, snapping a four-match losing streak. The Huskies enter the match 3-14-1, allowing at least five goals a dozen times.

Bryan Mazur and Peter Kerwin will have the call from Clark Field beginning at 6:45 p.m. followed by the first touch at 7:00 p.m.

The Door County United (DCU) Girls High School Swim Team remains undefeated in the Bay Conference with their varsity win over New London High School. The total score was 121-49. Senior swimmer Anika Steinbach (SBHS) was a consistent scorer in last night's meet, with her fourth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly.

For the final time this season, the Door County United swim team will host New London High School on Tuesday at the Door County YMCA.

The United are coming off one of their closest dual meets of the year, beating Wittenberg-Birnamwood on October 10th 86-84. They placed first, only 0.15s faster than Wittenberg’s A relay. Kailyn Neville (SDHS) was also among the top scorers of the evening for her individual events. Freshman Amelia Michalski (SBHS) and Megan Quaderer (SBHS) were also among some of the top scorers for the evening as well. The meet all came down to the 400 yard freestyle relay. DCU needed to place two relays in the top three finishes in order to win the meet. The A and B relay went to finish 2nd and 3rd, which gave us enough points to win the meet. Clippers soccer polish off Paladins on U-102.1

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers soccer team finished off their opportunities this time around against Providence Academy, winning the contest 6-0 at Clark Field.

Both Soccer teams started the match with high intensity in the opening minutes, but the Clippers struck first and often. Sturgeon Bay jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening 11 minutes, with goals coming from Klotz (6th), Estes (8th), and Gutierrez (11th). The Score would remain 3-0 through halftime, with most of that credit going to the Providence goalie, Brice Nedobeck, who shut down the Clippers attack until Finn Stephenson found the back of the net twice (49th, 55th minutes), giving the Clippers a commanding lead. A double yellow (Red) was issued in the 56th minute to a Providence player, leaving them with only ten on the field for the remainder of the match. Starr would finish the night's scoring off a direct kick in the 58th minute, and the match would end 6-0.

The victory unofficially gave the Clippers the Packerland Conference crown and a nice regular season send-off for the team's seniors.

The Clippers are on the road Friday (10/11/2024) against Hortonville and their next broadcast will be Friday (10/18/2024) when they travel to Seymour, That match will be on 103.3 The Pirate.  The Clippers also learned their fate for the WIAA Division 4 Tournament earlier this week, earning the #2 seed behind top-ranked Kiel. They will host the winner of New Holstein and Gresham/Bowler on October 24th.

Clippers Find Homecoming Heartbreak on U102.1

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers nearly snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, but end up falling to Mishicot 14-19 on Homecoming Friday night.

After stopping Mishicot's opening drive inside the Clipper 10-yard line, Sturgeon Bay would march the length of the field, eating up the entire first quarter.  The very first play of the second quarter, Andrew Nell would score a 1-yard touchdown giving the Clippers a 7-0 lead.

The Mishicot Indians would answer though, scoring 19 unanswered points.  13 of those came yet in the first half on passes by QB Eli Skarda.  He found find wide open receivers who would take the ball into the endzone. Once from Daryn Smith for 23 yards, and one to Gabriel Kunz, who would run for 50 yards after the catch on his 75-yard touchdown.  Ben Backus would add an additional touchdown in the fourth quarter, giving the Indians a 19-7 lead.

Sturgeon Bay would not go away quietly.  After one defensive stop, Caleb Plzak found Bryce Plzak for a 75 -yard touchdown.  Putting the score at the eventual final 14-19.  However, the game was not quite over.  The Clippers would get the ball back with just over a minute to go.  The Clippers would march down the field, using the sideline to their advantage, and throw the ball into the endzone with .6 seconds on the clock. Unfortunately for the Clippers, that ball was caught by a Mishicot Indian.

The Clippers fall to 3-1 in the conference, with a matchup with second place Southern Door looming Friday night, which can be heard on U102.1

High-scoring night for the Clippers soccer on U-102.1

The Clippers started early and scored often against the storm on Clark Field. Daniel Wienke started with a goal in the 3rd minute (assist Estes). The next score would happen in the form of an own goal by the Storm putting Sturgeon Bay up, 2-0. This is where things opened up for the Clippers and they would put in another five goals in less than 10 minutes. Estes (16th minute), D. Wienke (18th minute), Estes (22nd Min.), Starr (24th min.), Klotz (25th min.) and Bleck would make it 8-0 in the 34th minute. At Halftime, the fans were provided a preview of the future when the Junior Clippers Scrimmaged for 10 minutes on the full Clark Field. Daoust was the lone goal scorer during the halftime festivities.

After Halftime the scoring would continue with Benzinger adding the 9th goal and Zone Wienke scoring the final goal of the Match on an awarded penalty kick at 50:35. The game ended at that point with the Sturgeon Bay Clippers winning 10-0. They are back in action against Providence Academy next week, Thursday and that game will be on U-102.1.

Sturgeon Bay Looks to Right Ship on U102.1

The Clippers hope that a week of homecoming festivities will help erase the foul taste of last week's 42-0 loss to Kewaunee. They have a matchup with Mishicot awaiting them under the lights on Friday night.

The Clippers' offense was kept quiet last week, partially due to the loss of RB Patrick Haese to a targeting foul early in the game, which comes with an automatic ejection. Bryce Plzak would shift into the primary RB role but could only run for 25 yards in the game. Caleb Plzak would complete 8 of his 14 passes for 67 yards.

Mishicot comes into the game 1-5, coming off a 56-6 loss to Bonduel.
