The Sturgeon Bay Clippers varsity volleyball team faced one of its toughest challenges of the young season Thursday night, traveling to take on N.E.W. Lutheran, currently ranked No. 2 in Division 5 in the Wisconsin Volleyball Coaches Association poll.

 

The Clippers fell in three sets, 19-25, 23-25 and 13-25, but the final score doesn’t tell the whole story of the night.

 

Sturgeon Bay battled throughout the opening two sets and showed that it could compete with one of the state’s top-ranked teams. After dropping the opening set 25-19, the Clippers came back with an especially strong effort in the second.

 

Sturgeon Bay went point-for-point with N.E.W. Lutheran and pushed the set all the way to the finish before the Blazers were able to escape with a narrow 25-23 victory. N.E.W. Lutheran then found its rhythm in the third set and closed out the match, 25-13.

 

Despite the loss, the match provided another valuable early-season test for a Clipper team continuing to grow and develop. Playing a highly ranked opponent gave Sturgeon Bay an opportunity to see where it stands, while also identifying the small areas that can make the difference against high-level competition.

 

The Clippers will look to take what they learned from Thursday’s match and carry it into a busy stretch of the season ahead. With conference play underway and tournament competition on the schedule, Sturgeon Bay will continue to focus on consistency, communication and competing together.

There is plenty of volleyball still ahead for the Clippers — and Thursday night was another step in that journey.

 

Offensively, Audrey Harrington led the Clippers with nine kills on 22 attempts, highlighted by an impressive second set in which she put down five kills on nine swings while hitting .444. Reen Walker added four kills, while Izzy Schoeneman contributed five. Makenna Coyhis directed the offense with 21 assists. Defensively, Walker led Sturgeon Bay with six digs, while Harrington added five. The Clippers also showed some of their best serve-receive volleyball in the tightly contested second set, posting a 2.45 team passing rating as they pushed N.E.W. Lutheran to a 25-23 finish.

The Sturgeon Bay soccer team left the door open late in its road match on Thursday, allowing the Providence Paladins to score two goals late in a 3-2 loss.

 

The Clippers led the match 2-1 entering the final 20 minutes of the second half before a penalty kick set the Paladins up for a penalty kick goal.

 

 

It looked like the Clippers would escape Providence Academy with a 2-2 draw, but Isaiah Faulkner's corner kick curled to the far front post and could not be dug out of the goalmouth to give the Paladins their first-ever win against the defending Packerland Conference champions.  

 

 

The Clippers are back in action on Saturday when they play at West De Pere.

 

 

The Sturgeon Bay football team looks to bounce back from their loss last week when they travel to Oconto to battle the Blue Devils.

 

Not much went right for the Clippers on Friday night as they fell to the Peshtigo Bulldogs 35-0 Friday night on U102.1. The Clippers would receive the opening kickoff, but after a quick 3-and-out, they would punt the ball to Peshtigo. It was a short kick that resulted in the first of many drives that began in Clipper territory. The Bulldogs' drive would be capped by a 5-yard touchdown run by their running back Zac Schoenfeld, who had missed last week due to injury. The halftime break did not leave the Clippers much time to gather their bearings. The open kickoff of the second half was returned by Bulldogs returner Carter Drang for a touchdown, putting the Clippers behind 21-0 just 15 seconds into the second half. In a second half that sent the Clippers into a long journey home feeling both emotionally and physically beaten, the Bulldogs would send the game into a running clock in the fourth quarter and knock a few Clippers out of the game with injuries, including running back Shaun Estrada.

 

The Blue Devils are an identical 1-2 on the season after losing to local rival Oconto Falls last week 26-7. Finn Brady has piled up 187 yards and four touchdowns on the season.

 

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

The Sturgeon Bay soccer team hopes to return to the win column in Howard when they face the Providence Academy Paladins on U-102.1 Thursday afternoon.

 

The Clippers outshot Kiel 18-7, but it was the Raiders that made the most of their opportunities in a 4-3 loss for the Clippers. Finn Stevenson opened the scoring in the match's first five minutes, but the Raiders responded with two goals of their own to take the lead. The Clippers got the lead back with two more goals to make the score 3-2 before allowing two more goals to drop the match.

 

The Paladins are 3-1 on the season after dropping their first match of the season on Tuesday, 3-0 to Pulaski. Junior Kellan Landes leads the Paladins with 12 goals on the season, which is good for the second-most in the state.

 

Bryan Mazur and Peter Kerwin will have the call on U-102.1 beginning at 4:15 p.m., with the pregame show followed by the kickoff at 4:30 p.m.

The Sturgeon Bay volleyball team plays its first match of the week on Thursday when it travels to Green Bay to face NEW Lutheran.

 

Sturgeon Bay and Oconto went the distance Thursday night, with the Clippers battling through five sets before falling to Oconto, 3–2. Audrey Harrington led Sturgeon Bay offensively with 13 kills and also recorded 13 digs and 2 aces. Izzy Schoeneman added 9 kills, 7 digs, and 1 ace while Prudence Goettleman contributed 5 kills and 2 blocks. Auna Anderson finished with 4 kills and a block, while Reen Walker contributed across the board with 3 kills, 13 digs, 2 aces and 2 blocks. Setter Makenna Coyhis recorded 34 assists and 4 digs, while Jericha Reynolds added 5 digs and 2 aces.

 

The Blazers enter the match 8-2 on the season, including a 3-0 sweep of Algoma in its Packerland opener.

 

First serve is set for 7 p.m.

The Sturgeon Bay soccer team outshot Kiel 18-7, but it was the Raiders that made the most of their opportunities in a 4-3 loss for the Clippers.

"Our backline struggled with balls over the top, and Kiel made it very difficult for us," Mejia said. "We had plenty of chances but couldn’t capitalize. Myself and the coaches will make sure we prepare the boys for a better result next game."

 

That next match comes on Thursday when they travel to Howard to face Providence Academy. 

The Sturgeon Bay soccer team takes their perfect start to the season on the road Tuesday night when they visit Kiel.

 

Ranked #1 in the Bound Wisconsin poll, the Clippers are 5-0 to start the season, including back-to-back 8-0 wins over Packerland rivals Kewaunee and NEW Lutheran. In their last match against NEW Lutheran, Head coach Jesus Mejia Jr credited NEW Lutheran  for making it "tough for us to break down, but once the boys found combinations, we found ways to break through."  Those combinations yielded impressive results that allowed the game to be wrapped up in 60 minutes. Jaxzen Bleck and Ashton Benzinger each had two goals, while four others tallied one.

 

The Raiders enter the match 4-1, falling to #3 Sheboygan Christian/Lutheran 3-1 in their last match.

The Sturgeon Bay girls' golf team hits the links on Tuesday once again when they travel to Shawano Lake Golf Course for a Bay Conference meet.

 

The last Bay Conference meet was on August 27th, with the Clippers taking third place with a score of 232. Sophomore Kennedy Hoernke led the Clippers with a score of 51, 14 strokes behind Seymour's Maci Heagle, who led the Thunder to a first-place finish with a team score of 167.

 

The tee time is set for 2 p.m.

The Sturgeon Bay soccer team continued their hot start to the season on Thursday, beating NEW Lutheran 8-0 at Clark Field.

 

Head coach Jesus Mejia Jr credited NEW Lutheran  for making it "tough for us to break down, but once the boys found combinations, we found ways to break through."  Those combinations yielded impressive results that allowed the game to be wrapped up in 60 minutes. 

 

Jaxzen Bleck and Ashton Benzinger each had two goals, while four others tallied one.

Audrey Harrington led Sturgeon Bay offensively with 13 kills and also recorded 13 digs and 2 aces. Izzy Schoeneman added 9 kills, 7 digs, and 1 ace while Prudence Goettleman contributed 5 kills and 2 blocks.

 

Auna Anderson finished with 4 kills and a block, while Reen Walker contributed across the board with 3 kills, 13 digs, 2 aces and 2 blocks.

 

Setter Makenna Coyhis recorded 34 assists and 4 digs, while Jericha Reynolds added 5 digs and 2 aces.

 

The Clippers’ strongest offensive set came in the second, when they put down 12 kills on 25 attempts and hit .320 as a team. Sturgeon Bay also showed improvement in serve receive as the match progressed, posting passing ratings of 2.53 in the third set, 1.89 in the fourth and 2.20 in the fifth.

The 1-1 Sturgeon Bay Clippers hit the road to open Packerland Conference action as they travel to take on the Peshtigo Bulldogs Friday night at 7 PM.

 

The Clippers are coming off a home victory, the first victory in two years, and the first victory under head coach Matt Landers.  The win came last Thursday night in a 24-6 victory over the Clintonville Truckers.  The Clipper defense set the tone, forcing 4 Trucker turnovers in total, including each of the first two drives of the game.  Immediately following the first turnover, Shaun Estrada carried the ball for a 44-yard touchdown on the Clippers' first offensive snap.  Trygg Stuth threw for 164 yards and 3 touchdowns, finding Alex Boden for 101 of those yards and one of the touchdowns. 

 

 

Peshtigo enters the game seeking their first win of the season after being outscored 71-7 in the first two games.  The lone touchdown came via a 4-yard rush in week 1 by Senior running back Cody Nesberg.

 

 

The Tom Finlan Memorial Invitational cross country meet was held Tuesday at the UW-Green Bay cross country course and hosted by Preble High School. The weather was clear and sunny, but temperatures in the 80s and high humidity made for challenging conditions.

 

The Sturgeon Bay girls and boys teams battled through the heat, with several runners recording personal-best times.

 

Delaney Skiba won the girls JV race with a time of 22 minutes, 39 seconds, while Rio Martinez finished ninth in the boys varsity race with a time of 18:34.

The long layoff is over for the Door County United swim team as they hit the road on Thursday to swim against Wittenberg-Birnamwood. 

 

Prior to their home meet on August 25th against their conference opponents, DCU swam against them in Marinette. For the freshmen, Ashlyn Sixel (SDHS) finished sixth overall and Brennan Rass (SEV) finished seventh. Sophomore Hazel Monfils (SDHS) had a spectacular meet, finishing first overall and earning first in each individual event. Her fellow sophomore, Jillian Peterson (SDHS), finished ninth overall. For the juniors, Quinn Sperber (SDHS) finished third, and Mia Olson (SBHS) finished 11th. Finally, representing the seniors, Shaeffer Rass (SEV) finished second, Rachel Rock (SEV) finished 12th, and Hannah Denil (SBHS) finished 14th.

 

The first events begin at 6 p.m.

The Sturgeon Bay varsity volleyball team put together a strong night Tuesday, Sept. 1, going 2-0 at the Seymour triangular with victories over host Seymour and Little Chute.

 

The Clippers opened the night with a convincing 25-12, 25-18 sweep of Seymour before battling back from a first-set loss to defeat Little Chute 17-25, 25-15, 15-3.

 

Against Seymour, Sturgeon Bay’s offense was led by Audrey Harrington with 10 kills, while Izzy Schoeneman added nine. Auna Anderson contributed three kills, Prudence Goettleman finished with two, and Makenna Coyhis and Reen Walker each added one.

 

Coyhis directed the offense with 26 assists in the two-set victory. Defensively, Walker led the Clippers with nine digs, followed by Coyhis with seven. Harrington and Schoeneman each recorded five digs, while Jericha Reynolds added four.

 

Sturgeon Bay finished the Seymour match with 26 kills, 26 assists and 31 digs.

 

The Clippers were tested in their second match of the night after Little Chute took the opening set 25-17. Sturgeon Bay responded decisively, taking the second set 25-15 before dominating the deciding third set 15-3.

 

Schoeneman led the attack against Little Chute with 13 kills, while Harrington finished with six. Goettleman and Anderson each contributed four kills, and Walker added two.

 

Coyhis again ran the offense, recording 29 assists. Harrington led the defensive effort with eight digs, Reynolds added seven, and Walker and Schoeneman each finished with six.

 

Serving also played a major role in the comeback. Walker recorded a match-high five aces, including four in the decisive third set. Sturgeon Bay totaled nine aces against Little Chute.

 

For the entire triangular, Schoeneman led Sturgeon Bay with 22 kills, while Harrington finished with 16. Coyhis totaled 55 assists across the two matches, and Walker contributed 15 digs and five aces.

The Clippers finished the night 2-0, showing offensive balance and the ability to respond under pressure, particularly in their strong finish against Little Chute.

 

They will now play their first Packerland Conference match at home on Thursday against Oconto. The Blue Devils have opened the season 4-1, including a split of their two matches with Elcho and Adams-Friendship last weekend. The first serve is set for 7 p.m.

The Sturgeon Bay soccer team was able to explore their depth on Monday during its 8-0 win against Kewaunee on Tuesday. 

 

Finn Stevenson, Joni Ismali, and Deyvi Ubilla Polanco each had two goals in the rout that had the Clippers using the opportunity to get some of its players experience on varsity. "Subs did extremely well to figure out the system and had great leaders on the field," said head coach Jesus Mejia Jr.

 

 

The Clippers hit the pitch again on Thursday when they face 1-2-1 NEW Lutheran while the Storm head back out on Tuesday with a home match against Luxemburg-Casco.
