Sturgeon Bay soccer rolls into sectional final on 103.3 The Clipper

The Sturgeon Bay soccer team has now advanced to the sectional final after beating Lourdes Academy/Valley Christian 8-2 on a frigid night at Clark Field. Temperatures were in the 30s and the wind chill was around 20. Crews worked hard before the game to clear the snow off the pitch for hours.

It was even for about the first third of the game. Carson Dvorak started the scoring by putting in a goal in the 19th minute. The Knights answered five minutes later when Peter Chartier put one in the back of the net from just outside the box.

Twelve minutes past and Sturgeon Bay really turned it on. Dvorak scored his second goal of the game and then Spencer Hubbard scored 1:09 later. With just three seconds left in the half Eli Dietzel put in the fourth goal and the Clippers led 4-1 at the half. Owen Stevenson and Ben Luders scored two goals apiece in the second half before Lourdes/Valley Christian put in a goal late to make the final score 8-2.

The 2-seed Clippers will now travel to Kohler on Saturday to take on the number 1 seed Oostburg. The Flying Dutchmen prevented Kohler from hosting the sectional final game by beating them 4-1. Oostburg has not lost a game this season and has one tie. They've won 10 straight games. You can listen to the sectional final on 103.3 The Clipper and DoorKewauneeHighSchoolSports.com starting with the pregame show at 12:30 PM and a 1 o'clock kickoff.

Sturgeon Bay soccer in sectional semi-finals on 103.3 The Clipper

Sturgeon Bay soccer hasn't really been tested in the playoffs so far but that figures to change on Thursday. The 2-seed Clippers will take on 6-seed Lourdes Academy/Valley Christian at home. The Knights upset 3-seed Winnebago Lutheran 1-0 on Saturday to earn a trip to Clark Field in Sturgeon Bay. Howards Grove and Omro, Sturgeon Bay's two playoff opponents, were outscored by the Clippers by a combined 14-0 in the regionals. Not only will Sturgeon Bay be playing a tough opponent but the weather could be a major factor as the field could be wet from snow and the temperature will be in the 30s.

The Clippers are led by Packerland Conference Player of the Year Adison Benzinger and 8 All-Conference players. Whoever wins this game will play the winner of Oostburg and Kohler in the sectional final on Saturday in Kohler. You can hear the broadcast of the game on 103.3 The Clipper and DoorKewauneeHighSchoolSports.com beginning at 6:30 PM with the pregame show.

Clippers fill up All-Conference teams

Five Clipper volleyball players were named to All-Packerland Conference teams this season including three on the Second Team. Hailey DeGrave, Koko Hartzell and Lauren Alger were the three Clippers named to the squad. Madelyn Jeanquart and Kasia Klotz were named Honorable Mentions.

Benzinger wins conference player of the year

It's hard to single out one great player from the rest on the Sturgeon Bay soccer team but one Clipper has taken home the Packerland Conference Player of the Year award. Defender Adison Benzinger has taken home the top award. Eli Dietzel also could have been considered for the award and he did join Benzinger on the All-Conference First Team.

Benzinger helped lead the Clippers to another Packerland Conference championship and an 11th straight regional title on Saturday. Sturgeon Bay hopes to keep their playoff run going on Thursday when they host Lourdes Academy/Valley Christian on Thursday. The game will be broadcast on 103.3 The Clipper starting at 6:30 PM.

Sturgeon Bay cruises into sectionals on 103.3 The Clipper

For the 11th straight year, the Sturgeon Bay soccer team has captured a regional championship. The second-seeded Clippers came out strong against the 7-seed Omro on Saturday night and never let up for the full 90 minutes. Sturgeon Bay knocked off the Foxes 9-0 in a game broadcasted on 103.3 The Clipper and DoorKewauneeHighSchoolSports.com.

The Clippers got the scoring going in the 8th minute when Dylan Burk set up CJ Fairchild for a goal. Burk again got the assist two minutes later to Carson Dvorak. Spencer Hubbard scored the final goal in the first half in the 16th minute on a feed from Dvorak.

Sturgeon Bay kept the pressure up in the second half scoring 6 goals in total. Another goal from Spencer Hubbard and a goal apiece from Ben Lueders and Owen Stevenson got the score to 6-0. Eli Dietzel would then add a hat trick in the final 29 minutes of the game.

Dylan Burk was all over the pitch and Head Coach Todd Maas praised him in the postgame show. He assisted on four goals and helped set up a couple of others plus played great defense on the Foxes' star player Trevor Molitor.

Sturgeon Bay will move on to the sectionals and will play 6-seed Lourdes Academy/Valley Christian. The Knights upset 3-seed Winnebago Lutheran 1-0. Sturgeon Bay will host the game at Clark Field on Thursday. The pregame show will begin at 6:30 PM on 103.3 The Clipper and DoorKewauneeHighSchoolSports.com.

Sturgeon Bay soccer easily advances on 103.3 The Clipper

The Sturgeon Bay soccer team had no problem winning their first playoff game knocking off Howards Grove 5-0 at Clark Field. The game was broadcasted on 103.3 The Clipper and DoorKewauneeHighSchoolSports.com. Two-seed Sturgeon Bay did what they needed to against the 15-seed Tigers to pull out a victory. Howards Grove was playing strong defense early in the match until Sturgeon Bay got an easy wide-open net goal after the goalkeeper and defender miscommunicated on a ball. DJ Lenius was able to take advantage in the 25th minute.

Eli Dietzel added a goal in the 33rd minute and the Clippers led 2-0 at halftime.

Sturgeon Bay then added three goals in the span of six minutes in the second half. Dietzel scored again in the 61st minute and Ben Lueders put one past Howards Grove goalkeeper Ben Taylor in the 65th and then again in the 66th minute.

The match was played almost exclusively on the Howards Grove end of the pitch. After the game, Head Coach Todd Maas was a little frustrated his team couldn't get even more goals but was very pleased for the most part with how his team played.

The Clippers advance now to take on number 7-seed Omro on Saturday again on Clark Field. The Foxes trailed 1-0 at the half to 10-seed Kiel but came back for two goals in the second half to advance 2-1. That playoff match can be heard on 103.3 The Clipper and DoorKewauneeHighSchoolSports.com with the pregame show beginning at 6:30 PM and kickoff at 7.

Sturgeon Bay soccer starts playoffs on 103.3 The Clipper

Sturgeon Bay soccer will begin what will hopefully be a long playoff run on Thursday when they host Howards Grove. The Clippers are a two-seed in the Division 4 tournament and the Tigers are a 15. Howards Grove knocked off Kewaunee 7-1 on Tuesday to advance to play Sturgeon Bay.

The Clippers did not end the season the way they wanted to, losing two out of their final three games. They lost their first conference game in three years to Gibraltar/Sevastopol on October 14th, 1-0. Sturgeon Bay then beat Algoma at the Booyah Stadium in Green Bay by a score of 4-0 on October 17th. Their last match came on the road against Pulaski, a Division 2 team. They played a hard-fought game and fell 2-1.

This game is a rematch of last season's sectional final game played in Kohler which the Clippers won 2-1. The Tigers struggled this season finishing well under .500 overall and in the Big East Conference.

You can hear the broadcast of the match on 103.3 The Clipper and DoorKewauneeHighSchoolSports.com with the pregame show starting at 6:30 PM and kickoff at 7 from Clark Field in Sturgeon Bay.

Sturgeon Bay soccer looks ahead to playoffs

After another rainout on Monday against Gibraltar/Sevastopol, the Sturgeon Bay soccer team is now looking ahead towards postseason play. For the third time, their matchup with Gibraltar/Sevastopol at home was rained out on Monday. It will not be made up and Sturgeon Bay will have to wait until 2020 to get revenge on the Vikings. They handed the Clippers their first conference loss since 2016 in Fish Creek on October 14th. The final score was 1-0 in a match heard on 103.3 The Clipper and DoorKewauneeHighSchoolSports.com. Sturgeon Bay soccer bounces back on 103.3 The Clipper

After being shutout on Monday against Gibraltar/Sevastopol, the Sturgeon Bay boys soccer team wasted no time getting on the board against Algoma on 103.3 The Clipper. Christian Fairchild scored in the 2nd minute and Sturgeon Bay would add three more goals and to beat the Wolves 4-0.

The game was played in Ashwaubenon at the home of the Green Bay Booyah because Sturgeon Bay's Clark Field was too wet to play. This was the second matchup between these two teams played on a neutral field. The first was played at Notre Dame Academy in Green Bay because Algoma's home field was too wet.

Robert Alas scored in the 38th minute for Sturgeon Bay and the Clippers had a 2-0 lead at the half. Owen Stevenson added a goal two minutes into the second half and Arthur Kelsey would finish off the scoring late in the game.

Despite allowing four goals, Algoma goalkeeper Haakon Utesch was stellar making save after save including a highlight-reel diving save to stop a Carson Dvorak shot.

Sturgeon Bay will next take the pitch Friday night when they travel to Pulaski for a 6 PM kickoff. The next broadcast of Sturgeon Bay soccer will be next Thursday in the playoff opener. They will take on the winner of Howards Grove and Kewaunee which will be played on Tuesday. Sturgeon Bay soccer hopes to bounce back on 103.3 The Clipper

The Sturgeon Bay boys soccer team will be in an unfamiliar position on Thursday night...playing in a game coming off a conference loss. Gibraltar/Sevastopol knocked off the Clippers 1-0 on Monday and it was the first Packerland Conference loss for Sturgeon Bay since joining the league in 2017. Sturgeon Bay will have a chance to rebound playing at home against Algoma. The Wolves are 5-5-1 in the Packerland Conference and haven't played since Thursday due to a couple of rained out games. Star forward Eli Dietzel will still be out with a hip flexor and the Clippers badly missed him against the Vikings.

You can hear the broadcast of the game at DoorKewauneeHighSchoolSports and 103.3 The Clipper with the pregame show starting at 6 PM and kickoff at 6:30.

Gibraltar/Sevastopol pulls massive upset over Sturgeon Bay on 103.3 The Clipper

The Sturgeon Bay boys soccer team had not lost a Packerland Conference game since joining the league in the 2017 season...until Monday night. Gibraltar/Sevastopol scored a goal in the 6th minute in the game and then held on the final 84 minutes to come away with a 1-0 shocking upset victory. The game was broadcasted on 103.3 The Clipper and DoorKewauneeHighSchoolSports.com. Kiegan Sargent knocked a shot past Clipper goalkeeper Joe Wind for the only score of the match.

Sturgeon Bay Head Coach Todd Maas was worried before the game about his team coming out flat after picking up a big victory on Saturday on the road against Notre Dame in Green Bay. He also said the team doesn't ever seem to play well at Gibraltar and both worries ended up being legitimate. Sturgeon Bay was also without their star forward Eli Dietzel who was out with a hip flexor injury. Coach Maas hopes to have him back for when the playoffs begin next Thursday.

Sturgeon Bay had a rush of good goal-scoring opportunities in the last 25 minutes or so of the game but couldn't put a ball past Viking goalkeeper Hayden Hoffman who was always in the right position to make a save.

Gibraltar/Sevastopol will try to beat another team above them in the Packerland standings on Tuesday when they host Green Bay NEW Lutheran, kickoff at 6:30 PM. Sturgeon Bay will have a couple of days to rest before their next game on Thursday at home against Algoma. That game will be broadcast on 103.3 The Clipper and DoorKewauneeHighSchoolSports.com with the pregame starting at 6 PM and kickoff at 7.

Carson Dvorak scored a goal in the 4th minute and Robert Alas added one in the 10th. The Clipper defense, led by senior Adison Benzinger, was stellar in preserving the shutout.

Notre Dame came in to the game at 12-6-1 overall playing against better competition as the Tritons are a Division 3 team. They were able to recover after a rough start and played even the last 80 minutes.

Weather was a factor as the temperature for the game was about 40 degrees and wind gusts got up to 35 MPH.

Clipper soccer with big non-conference matchup on 103.3 The Clipper

Notre Dame is a strong division 3 team and Sturgeon Bay will go on the road to play them in a Saturday matinee. The Clippers have won each conference game so far this season by at least three goals. Notre Dame comes into this game at 12-6-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the Fox River Classic Conference. The Tritons are coming off a 3-2 loss to Bay Port on their home field. Sturgeon Bay is 14-2-1 overall and coming off the Kewaunee victory.

The two teams have built up a bit of a rivalry in recent years. They played each other every year from 2013 to 2017 and were scheduled to play last season but the game was canceled. Notre Dame won 4 of those 5 matchups with Sturgeon Bay's only win coming in 2016.

You can hear the game live on 103.3 The Clipper and DoorKewauneeHighSchoolSports.com starting with the pregame show at 11:30 AM and kickoff at noon.

Sturgeon Bay soccer postponed Friday

According to Sturgeon Bay varsity boys soccer coach Todd Maas, Clark Field was not in good enough condition for the Clippers to play their regularly-scheduled game with Gibraltar/Sevastopol. Clark Field was pounded with rain all day Friday and the field was too wet to play by the time the rain had stopped. There is no word yet on whether the game will be made up or not. Sturgeon Bay was supposed to play three days in a row after beating Kewaunee on Thursday 10-0. The Clippers will play a non-conference matchup at Notre Dame on Saturday in a game you can listen to on 103.3 The Clipper and DoorKewauneeHighSchoolSports.com.
