Three Clippers named to All Packerland Teams

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers had three total athletes named to their respective All Packerland Conference teams on Monday.

Carley Wodack was named to the girls' basketball team as an honorable mention while Anthony Jennerjohn and Jack Schmelzer received second-team honors for boys' basketball.

Clippers sail past Pioneers

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers did not look back from a 12-point halftime lead in its 70-51 win over Sevastopol Thursday night.

Anthony Jennerjohn led the Clippers with 18 points and Jack Schmelzer added 11 points without hitting one shot from behind the arc. They left that to Andrew Carbajal and Spencer Hubbard who each hit a trio of three-pointers while Isaak Aune knocked down a pair.  Playing without Cole Dvorak, the Pioneers were led by Jack De Young with 14 points. The Pioneers knocked down eight of their own from behind the arc with Hunter Bemmann, Manav Jandu, and Logan Beyer each knocking down a pair.

Clippers boys host Peshtigo

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers continue their march to the postseason on Monday with a game at home against Peshtigo.

The Clippers escaped Two Rivers on Saturday with a 45-42 victory for their second win in a row. It is a turning of the tide for the Clippers after losing their four previous games. They are hoping for a repeat of their 63-58 at Peshtigo back in January. Four different Clippers scored in double figures in that game, led by Jack Schmelzer's 16 points. The Bulldogs lost to Southern Door on Saturday 67-57, who will be the opening round opponent for the Clippers in the Division 3 playoffs next week.

Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.

Clippers explosion spurs victory

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers showed life offensively in the second half of their 68-58 victory over Oconto Friday night.

Down by one at half, the Clippers cruised to victory by outscoring the Blue Devils 45-22. The Blue Devils' Josh Woller's 1000th point may have gotten the feels from the home crowd, but it was the Clippers' Anthony Jennerjohn that got the win. He scored 23 points as a game-high with Preston Newton and Jack Schmelzer combining to score another 28 points. Woller and Caleb Moe each scored 17 points in the loss.

Clippers look to rebound against Peshtigo

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers are still looking for that elusive first conference win when they travel to Peshtigo Tuesday night.

The Clippers' Carley Wodack scored 10 points but ultimately could not break through the conference's best team on Monday night when they lost to Kewaunee 71-29. Wodack leads the Clippers in most categories including points (9.3 ppg), rebounds (6.6 rpg) and assists (2.6 apg).

The Bulldogs sit in third place after falling to Southern Door last Friday night 55-51 in overtime. They were outscored 6-2 in the extra period after coming back from a 28-16 halftime deficit to force overtime. Like Wodack, Sydney Lund leads the Bulldogs in all offensive categories, averaging over 12 points, six rebounds, and two rebounds a game.

Cippineers coach reflects on regional wrestling meet

The Sturgeon Bay / Sevastopol Wrestling team traveled to Two Rivers on Saturday to compete in the WIAA D2 Regional Tournament.  Due to COVID contract tracing, SBS only had six wrestlers eligible to compete in the tournament.  All of which were wrestling at Regionals for the first time.  The competition was fierce with five of the seven teams being ranked in the state and over 40 individually state-ranked wrestlers scattered throughout the brackets.

Senior captain Ben DeNamur capped off his senior campaign with a fifth-place finish in the 132-pound bracket.  A workhorse in the wrestling and weight room, Ben ended the season with a 7-2 record, including going undefeated in conference matches.

Sophomore 285-pound wrestler Ben Roman placed fourth in his first appearance at Regionals.  Ben won his first-round match against Conor Sanford from Two Rivers before falling to the eventual Regional Champion in the semi-finals.  He ends the season with a 6-3 record, with all three losses coming against WIAA Sectional qualifiers.

Our coaching staff knew we would take some lumps on the day, but our kids were excited to finally be able to compete in a tournament.  With five of our six wrestlers being Freshman or Sophomores, we're excited about the building blocks we have for this team going forward.

Door County United adds swimmers to state meet

A few more swimmers will join Jacob Norton at this weekend's state swim meet in Waukesha.

Norton punched his ticket to the state meet by winning the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of just over 1:01. Sectional winners automatically clinched state berth, but other swimmers had to wait to find out if the times they posted last Saturday were enough to make the meet as well.

Other state qualifiers include:

  • 200-yard medley relay
  • 200-yard individual medley- Ethan Almstadt, Luke Bousley
  • 50-yard freestyle- Jacob Northon
  • 100-yard freestyle- Luke Bousley
  • 200-yard freestyle relay
  • 100-yard breaststroke- Drew Rass along with Norton

The state meet begins at the Waukesha South High School Natatorium beginning at 6 p.m.
