Peshtigo Wins Team Titles as Kewaunee and Algoma Battle at Varsity Meet

Peshtigo swept both team championships at the varsity track and field meet, with the boys scoring 125.5 points and the girls finishing with 105. Kewaunee placed second in both divisions, while Algoma finished third on the boys side and fourth in the girls standings.

On the boys side, Kewaunee collected multiple event wins and top finishes across distance, throws, and relays, led by strong performances from Jaylon Mason and Robin Kunesh in the 3200 meters, Mitchell Boeder in the shot put and discus, and Trevor Gauthier in the long jump and 4x800 relay. Algoma’s top highlights included Jacob Blahnik, who placed in the 200, 400, and hurdles events, and strong relay finishes including a runner-up in the 4x200.

For the girls, Peshtigo controlled much of the meet, while Kewaunee and Algoma picked up key individual results in the field and track events, including Calvin Mayheu’s first-place high jump for Algoma and Seth Chevalier’s runner-up finish in pole vault for Kewaunee.

Kewaunee Clears out Algoma Behind Dominant Pitching and Big Bats

Kewaunee controlled both sides of the baseball doubleheader, sweeping Algoma with 14-0 and 6-0 wins.

In game one, Blake Temme powered the offense with four RBIs on two hits, while Brett Paulsen dominated on the mound with 11 strikeouts over four shutout innings. The Storm broke it open with a 10-run fourth, finishing with 11 hits and eight walks.

Game two featured another complete team effort, as Waylon Delain and Jackson Walecka combined on a three-hit shutout. Delain also led the offense with three hits, while Paulsen and Diesel Bosdeck each drove in two runs. A four-run sixth inning helped seal the 6-0 victory.

Kewaunee was sharp throughout, playing error-free defense across both games while outscoring Algoma 20-0 on the day.

The Storm are still looking for their first win and goal of the season after dropping its first four matches of its campaign. They last lost to Providence Academy 5-0 on Friday.

"War on the Shore" takes to the diamond on 104.1 WRLU

The "War on the Shore" is set to add another chapter, this time on the baseball diamond, in a Packerland Conference doubleheader, with game two to be heard on 104.1 WRLU.

Kewaunee has turned heads all spring behind the arm of Brett Paulsen, who has already tossed a trio of no hitters this spring.  Make no mistake about it though, the Storm offense has been plenty powerful to go with the pitching efforts.  The Storm won their lone games from last week with a doubleheader sweep of Sevastopol 8-0 and 10-0.

Across the chalk lines will be the Algoma Wolves, with a 2-6 record, having dropped its last three games. That includes a pair of losses to Mineral Point on Saturday by scores of 10-2 and 11-5. In game one, the Wolves led 2-0 heading into the seventh inning before allowing all 10 of Mineral Point's runs as they were plagued by three walks, two errors, and seven hits. Cal DeMeuse, Cayden Neuzil, and Jack Schwader collected hits in the loss wile DeMeuse and Braeden Leist drove in the runs. In game two, it was a six-run inning that did the Wolves in. The two teams combined for 10 errors, leading to only four of the 16 runs scored to be earned.

The first pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. Eric Fischer will be on the call for game two of the doubleheader, scheduled for 5:45 pm.  Our pregame show is currently slated for 5:30 pm.

Other Packerland Conference games set for Tuesday include Sevastpol traveling to Oconto, Sturgeon Bay welcoming Southern Door, and Gibraltar/Washington Island visiting Peshtigo. All of the matchups are doubleheaders that begin at 4 p.m.

Comeback comes up short for Storm softball

The battle back from a 3-0 deficit proved to be too much for the Kewaunee softball team as they allowed a run in the seventh inning to drop their contest against Valders on Monday 4-3.

The Storm allowed a run in the third and two more in the fifth before they rallied in the sixth inning. In the sixth inning, Kambreia Last drove in the first run on a ground out while Braelyn Chevalier's bases-clearing triple tied the game. Megan Hochkammer's solo shot in the seventh proved to be the difference as the Storm left the tying run on second base.

Breanna Riha, Chevalier, Ali Repitz, and Summer Walechka recorded hits for the Storm in the loss with Repitz taking the decision from the circle, allowing four runs (4 ER) on seven hits and one walk while striking out six across seven innings.

The Storm are back in action Tuesday when they welcome Algoma for a pair beginning at 4:30 p.m. The Wolves are coming in with a three game winning streak, including a doubleheader sweep of Sturgeon Bay last Thursday and a 7-0 shutout of Bonduel on Friday.

Kewaunee, Luxemburg-Casco clash on softball diamond

Two Kewaunee County rivals will meet along the lakeshore Monday afternoon when Kewaunee welcomes Luxemburg-Casco on its softball diamond.

Kewaunee out-hit Oconto 13-10, with Braelyn Chevalier and Vivian Bootz each collecting three hits, but an eight-run sixth inning flipped the game. Despite the setback, the Storm showed consistent production throughout the lineup and played clean defensively without an error.

Game 2 turned into an all-out shootout, and another late-game swing saw Oconto take a 16-15 lead in the eighth. But the Storm answered. Kambriea Last and Breanna Riha came through in the bottom half as a fielder’s choice from Riha scored Last, pushing across the winning run in a 17-16 walk-off victory.

Luxemburg-Casco softball used a five-run fifth inning to generate a walk-off run-rule victory over the Marinette Marines Friday, 10-0. The Spartans held a 5-0 lead through four innings and were in control of the game behind strong pitching from Baylee Wypiszenski and Jasmine Jandrin who combined for 3 hits and 6 strikeouts in the shutout. Wypiszenski earned the win in the circle. Alayna Deprez reached all four times she stepped up to the plate with a double and three walks while scoring and driving in a run. Kewaunee softball battled through a roller-coaster Saturday, dropping a tough opener before responding with a dramatic walk-off win to split with Oconto.

Kewaunee proves it can win in a multitude of ways

Kewaunee Storm baseball completed a sweep of Oconto on Saturday, riding dominant pitching in Game 1 and timely late-game execution in Game 2.

In the opener, Brett Paulsen was untouchable. The left-hander tossed a five-inning no-hitter, striking out 10 and allowing just two walks in a 10-0 run-rule victory. Kewaunee wasted no time giving him support, exploding for five runs in the first inning.

Connor Kilgore’s two-run double highlighted the early surge, while the Storm continued to apply pressure with aggressive baserunning and disciplined at-bats, finishing with seven walks and six stolen bases. Blake Temme added to the offensive depth with a pair of hits and three RBIs from the lower half of the lineup.

After cruising in the opener, the Storm were pushed into a tight, low-scoring battle, tied 1-1 into the sixth inning. Instead of letting the momentum slip, Kewaunee delivered the decisive blow. Kilgore came through again, launching a two-run homer to left that broke the tie and lifted the Storm to a 3-1 win.

Waylon Delain grinded through six innings, allowing just one unearned run and striking out five. The defense backed him up with two double plays, and Paulsen returned to the mound to shut the door and secure the save, capping a dominant day on both sides of the ball.

The Storm travels to face Sevastopol on Thursday at 4 p.m.
