Kewaunee rallies for win over Brillion, falls to Marathon in Sectionals on 104.1 WRLU

The Kewaunee Storm rallied to win the sectional opener against the Brillion Lions 5-4 on Tuesday, only to lose in heartbreaking fashion to the Marathon Red Raiders in Crivitz in Division 3 WIAA baseball.

The Storm made an incredible comeback in the semi-final by scoring four runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to overtake Brillion in a stunner.

Pitcher Brett Paulsen went five innings for the Storm before giving way to Waylon Delain.  Paulsen struck out nine batters while allowing only two hits.

The game was scoreless until the Lions tallied two runs in the top of the fifth innng, while the Storm answered with a run in the bottom of the frame on a RBI sacrifice fly by Diesel Bosdeck.

The score stayed 2-1 in favor of the Lions until the seventh inning when they added two more runs to make it 4-1 going into the ninth.  That's when Kewaunee came storming back.

Calvin Kolmorgen walked and pitch-hitter Alec Carlson singled to put runners at first and second.  Paulsen then hit a grounder to first that went under the glove of the fielder and Kolmorgen scored and runners ended up at first and third.  After singles by Delain and Diesel Bosdeck scored another run, Dane Harrell smashed a two-run double off the left field fence to bring around Paulsen and Delain to complete the incredible comeback.

In the sectional final, Kewaunee struck first in the third inning on a two-out  RBI single by Paulsen that scored Micah Vanness giving the Storm a 1-0 lead.

The score stayed that way thanks to great pitching by Jackson Walecka, until Marathon tallied a run in the bottom of the sixth on a close play at the plate.  Walecka threw 6.2 innings and allowed only one run and six hits and left with two runners on and two outs in the seventh.   The Red Raiders walked it off on a long drive to left field by Quillen Kunkel off Delain that scored the winning run and goes down as a single.

Kewaunee finishes an incredible season going 27-1 and winning the Packerland Conference with a 12-0 record.  The Storm graduates seven seniors who were part of two great seasons that saw Kewaunee go to state and finish as the runner-ups last year.

After the sectional performance in Crivitz, Coach Dan Spranger shared his emotional message about his team and seniors in the post-game interview.
