Storm Rally but Fall 36-37 on U102.1

The stat sheet will not tell the whole story as the Kewaunee Storm fall at home to the Bonduel Bears 37-36, ending the Storm's 2025 football season with a final record of 9-2.

The teams swapped empty possessions to open the game. Kewaunee would open the scoring on their second possession with a 4-yard rush by QB Brett Paulsen.  A missed extra point left the game 6-0.  The very first play of the ensuing Bear drive, the Storm would force and recover a Gavin Hundt fumble.  Just a few plays later, Paulsen would run in from 1-yard out, and throw a successful 2-point try to Connor Kilgore to make it a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Chaos would be the theme of the second quarter.  Brett Paulsen would intercept the Bears QB Quinn Wesenberg at the Storm's 13-yard line. However, on the first play of the Storm drive, Brett Paulsen would be hit as he threw the ball, which fell into the hands of Bonduel's Carter Moesch for a 13-yard pick 6.

Kewaunee would answer that play with a drive that ended with a 12-yard Paulsen to Connor Kilgore touchdown.  Another missed extra point made the score 20-7.  Bonduel had an immediate answer as Gavin Hundt made up for his earlier fumble, returning the kickoff for an 80-yard score.  After a short drive and a very short punt that only gained around 14 yards of field position, Bonduel's star running back, Carter Moesch, took the first play and rushed 65 yards to the end zone and a 21-20 lead for Bonduel with 1:21 to go in the first half.

Brett Paulsen would be hit on the next drive, losing the ball and turning the ball over to the Bears with 41 seconds in the half, and the Bears inside Storm territory.  A holding call would push the Bears back outside the Storm 40, and a sack by Bryce Tulachka pushed the Bears back into their own territory while keeping the game a 21-20 game at the half.

The Bears would open the second half with a nearly 8-minute drive, but turned the ball over on downs inside the Storm 30.  That long drive helped the third quarter remain scoreless, but the fourth had plenty of action in store.

The Bears would go up by two scores late in the game on a Jack Zernicki 1-yard touchdown that came on a fourth down. Lined up to kick an extra point, holder Quinn Wesenberg would run a fake and carry the ball across the goal line to put the Bears up by two scores, 29-20.  After driving down the field quickly, Brett Paulsen would add another rushing touchdown from 1 yard out and a successful 2-point pass to Waylon Delain, making it a 29-28 game.

The storm would get the ball back after holding the Bears to a short drive.  With 1:05 to go in the game, Brett Paulsen would loft a ball up deep along the Bonduel sideline to Diesel Bosdeck, who got behind his defender and outran another Bear for the 77-yard go-ahead touchdown, giving the Storm a 36-29 lead.

The Bears again had an answer.  A long kick return gave the Bears outstanding field position.  Carter Moesch would use the field position to score an 8-yard rushing touchdown.  Instead of kicking the extra point to tie, the Bears went for the lead and the win, finding Moesch once again in the endzone on the final score of 36-37 and the Bonduel Bears advancing to round 3 of the 2025 WIAA playoffs.

Storm Host Bulldogs in Round 2 on U102.1

he Kewaunee Storm look to advance further into the 2025 WIAA playoffs as they meet a familiar opponent on U102.1 on Friday night in Kewaunee.  Bonduel looks to redeem an early season loss as when the two teams met in the regular season, Kewaunee came away with the 14-7 victory on the familiar turf of Don Rabas Field.

The week 4 matchup saw Brett Paulsen record both of the touchdowns on the ground.  The game was sealed with a successful fake punt from Kewaunee's own 26-yard line.

Kewaunee advanced through Round 1 with a 36-6 victory over the Marathon Red Raiders.  Brett Paulsen had a hand in 5 touchdowns on the night, 3 on the ground, and two through the air.

The Bonduel Bears earned the trip to Kewaunee by beating St. Mary Catholic 49-21.  All 7 of the Bears touchdowns came on the ground.

You can tune in to the Round 2 matchup by joining Jacob Nate for the 6:45, and the 7:00 kickoff on Friday night on U102.1 and NEW Radio Sports Network.

Kewaunee's Paulsen and Boeder named Packerland's Offensive Player of the Year

Coming off a stellar baseball campaign that saw him leading his team to the state championship game, Kewaunee quarterback Brett Paulsen is proving that his arm is pretty good with a football too.

Paulsen was named the offensive player of the year by the Packerland Conference when they announced their All-Conference teams over the weekend. With more than 40 touchdowns on his ledger, Paulsen has proved to be a dual threat quarterback with 1,797 yards passing and 851 yards rushing. He threw for two touchdowns and ran for another three in Kewaunee's 36-6 win over Marathon last week in their playoff opener. Paving the way for Paulsen has been Mitchell Boeder, who was named the conference's Offensive Lineman of the Year. The Storm will battle Bonduel this Friday night in Level 2 Playoff Action that will be carried live on U-102.1.

Lourdes Academy boys, Kewaunee girls claim sectional titles; several local runners qualify for state

Area runners and teams braved cool fall conditions at the Division 3 Sectional meet held in Manitowoc, with state berths on the line.

On the boys’ side, Lourdes Academy edged out Valders by just four points to capture the sectional team title, finishing with 113 points. Iola-Scandinavia (129) and Weyauwega-Fremont (133) rounded out the top four, while Mishicot finished fifth with 140.

Rounding out the top five were Lourdes Academy’s Henry Spanbauer (16:56.3) and Omro’s Lucas Kasuboski (17:27.9).

Southern Door led local boys’ teams with a strong showing, finishing just outside the top ten behind solid performances from its young core. Algoma, Gibraltar, and Sevastopol also competed, rounding out a deep local representation in the sectional field.

In the girls’ race, Kewaunee captured the sectional title with 74 points, holding off Valders (93) and Southern Door (118). Lourdes Academy (126) and Mishicot (148) rounded out the top five.

Paulsen's 5 TD's Lead Storm over Red Raiders

The Kewaunee Storm defended their home turf in round 1 of the 2025 WIAA football playoffs, fending off the visiting Marathon Red Raiders 36-6 on Friday night on U102.1.

The two teams opened the game by swapping scoreless possessions, but on the second Kewaunee drive, Brett Paulsen would open the scoring with a 14-yard TD run with 3:14 left in the first quarter. A mishandled snap on the extra point left the game 6-0.  Kewaunee would quickly get the ball back, and on the final play of the first quarter, Bret Paulsen would find Connor Kilgore wide open behind the Red Raider's corner for a 40-yard touchdown.  Paulsen would find Waylon Delain for the successful 2-point try, and the 14-0 lead at the end of one quarter.

The game would be scoreless in the second quarter, but not without its share of drama.  Marathon had the ball inside the Kewaunee 5-yard line at one point, but was turned away on downs, which kept the score at 14-0 at halftime. The drama was far from over.

Kewaunee kicked off to open the second half, but was able to hold Marathon to a 3 and out. Kewaunee would add to their first-half lead via an 18-yard Paulsen to Delain touchdown pass.  Conner Kilgore would complete a successful 2-point try, and the 22-0 lead.  The next drive, Connor Kilgore would put a stop to another Marathon drive inside the 10-yard line, picking off Marathon QB Tyler Thurs in the endzone, but falling at the 1.

With their heels in their own endzone, Kewaunee gave the ball on first down to Waylon Delain, who would bolt through the Red Raider's defense for 40 yards, and the end of the 3rd quarter with Kewaunee leading by the 22-0 score.

Things got chippy in the fourth as Marathon saw its season slipping away.  Multiple big hits drew penalty flags; several others could have, but didn't.  One such hit sent Diesel Bosdeck to the sidelines for the rest of the game after he picked off Thursday's pass and returned it inside the Marathon 10-yard line.  Paulsen would rush the very next play in for a 9-yard score, and drew offsetting personal foul penalties one against Paulsen, and one against the nearest Marathon defender and things seemed to calm down at that point.  Dane Harrell would end the next marathon drive with another interception, and Paulsen would rush in from 2 yards out to cap the Storm scoring, and send the game into a running clock for the final 7 minutes.

Marathon, however, did not go down without a final swing or two. On their final drive, they used two timeouts on route to score their lone touchdown on the night with under a minute to go.

Kewaunee will host Bonduel Friday, October 31st, which can be heard on U102.1 and NEW Radio Sports Network with Jacob Nate taking you through pregame at 6:45 PM, followed by the 7:00PM kickoff.

Storm surge past Marinette to claim Packerland Conference title

The Kewaunee Storm capped off their regular season with a statement win Friday night, defeating Marinette 42-21 in a dual for the Packerland Conference championship.

Marinette struck first after forcing a turnover on downs on Kewaunee’s opening possession. Senior quarterback Chase MacGregor connected on a short touchdown pass to put the Marines ahead 7-0. The Storm responded quickly, leaning on the ground game led by Waylon Delain and quarterback Brett Paulsen. Paulsen capped off the drive with a four-yard touchdown pass to Connor Kilgore to even the score at 7-7.

After recovering a fumbled snap just before the first-quarter break, Kewaunee took its first lead on a 19-yard touchdown run from Paulsen, fighting through multiple tackles to make it 14-7.

A Kilgore interception late in the second quarter set up another scoring opportunity, and Paulsen found Dane Harrell from 21 yards out for the touchdown. The Storm added one more score before halftime with another Paulsen rushing touchdown to take a 26-7 lead at the break.

Marinette opened the second half with a big play from MacGregor, breaking loose for a 73-yard run before Mason Hofherr punched it in from 11 yards out to cut the deficit to 26-14. But Kewaunee’s offense stayed in rhythm. Paulsen added a nine-yard touchdown run before a fumbled handoff recovered by Harrell set up a 20-yard reverse touchdown from Kilgore to stretch the lead to 42-14 at the end of the third quarter.

Marinette’s Cooper Smith scored late in the fourth, but it was too little too late as the Storm closed out the 42-21 win.

Paulsen finished with three rushing touchdowns and two passing scores, leading Kewaunee to a perfect 6-0 record in conference play and 8-1 overall. Marinette drops to 6-3 (5-1), suffering its first conference loss of the season.

The Storm will now turn their attention to the postseason, looking to carry their strong finish and balanced offensive attack into the playoffs.

Storm football facing Marines

The Kewaunee football team is hosting Marinette this Friday.

The Marines are coming off a 51-30 victory over Mishicot.

The Storm saw some pretty notable performances last Friday in their 49-8 victory over Peshtigo. Brett Paulsen had 250 total yards, threw for 4 touchdowns, and ran 2 in himself. Diesel Bosdeck had 98 rushing yards with a touchdown on only 3 attempts, one of those being a 90-yard rushing touchdown. Connor Kilgore had 79 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns on 6 receptions. The Storm’s offensive line also showed out, not allowing a single sack and serving 15 pancakes. Leading the way for the defense was Bryce Tulachka, who had 10 total tackles, 4 of which were for loss and half a sack.

In a recent interview with Kewaunee head coach Randy Charles, he said he is prepared to face a strong Marinette offense and defensive line. Their current focus is on the present, and they have been working to set themselves up for success, looking into the playoffs.

The kick-off is at 7:00 pm.

Kewaunee dominates early but falls in four to N.E.W. Lutheran

Kewaunee came out strong Tuesday night, winning the opening set and holding leads late in the second and third, but N.E.W. Lutheran’s persistence and steady defense helped the Blazers rally back for a four-set victory.

After a back-and-forth start in set one, the Storm took control at 13-13 and used a six-point run to pull away, cruising to a 25-15 win.

Kewaunee looked to build on that momentum, jumping ahead 12-6 in the second set before N.E.W. Lutheran battled back to take its first lead at 14-13. The teams traded points the rest of the way before the Blazers edged out the 25-23 win to even the match.

The third set followed a similar pattern as Kewaunee led early, but late errors opened the door for the Blazers, who closed strong for a 25-22 victory and a 2-1 advantage.

With momentum on their side, N.E.W. Lutheran started fast in the fourth, racing out to an 8-1 lead that the Storm couldn’t overcome, finishing the match with a 25-20 set win to take it 3-1.

Kewaunee drops just below .500 on the season at 11-12 overall and evens out in conference play at 4-4, while N.E.W. Lutheran improves to 18-18 (3-4).

The Storm will look to bounce back Saturday with a non-conference matchup against Crivitz at 10 a.m.

Kewaunee battles hard in four-set loss to Peshtigo

Despite a gritty effort and several strong rallies, the Kewaunee volleyball team fell to Peshtigo 3-1 Tuesday night. The Storm showed plenty of fight throughout the match, never backing down even when facing large deficits.

Peshtigo opened strong, using a 5-point run early in the first set to build an 8-3 lead and maintain control on the way to a 25-14 win. Kewaunee answered in the second, pulling away late after a 16-16 tie and sealing the set 25-18 on an ace from Ali Obry.

Storm volleyball sweeps Mishicot en route to Peshtigo

The Kewaunee Storm won their fifth match in their last eight tries on Monday night, beating Mishicot 3-0 ahead of its conference match against Peshtigo.

The Storm captured the win by outscoring the Indians 25-20, 25-20, 25-23.

The Bulldogs went 3-2 in their tournament action in Reedsville over the weekend, sweeping Reedsville, Oshkosh North, and Marinette while being swept by Laconia and Wabeno/Laona.

The first serve is at 7 p.m.

Kewaunee volleyball suits up against Mishicot

The Kewaunee volleyball team will be the lone local squad playing Monday night when they travel to Mishicot to take on the Indians.

The Storm outlasted the Pioneers last Thursday for a 3-2 victory (11-25, 25-15, 24-26, 25-15, 15-13). The Storm's defense and performance at the service line were key to the win. According to MaxPreps, their 13 aces were the most aces they've posted since October 2024.  Braelyn Chevalier had a season-high 18 digs and four aces, and Gabby Stangel had 21 digs.

The Indians come into the match 7-18 on the season and are trying to break a three-match losing streak. Take tournament play out of the equation, and the Indians are looking for their first win since a three-game sweep of Hilbert on September 18th.

The first serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Clippers, Blazers look to build tournament resumes on U-102.1

With soccer seeding meetings taking place in less than a week, Sturgeon Bay and NEW Lutheran look to add to their resumes when they meet at Clark Field on Monday afternoon.

The Clippers are unbeaten in Packerland Conference play as they enter their matinee against the Blazers. After escaping Peshtigo with a 1-1 draw, the Clippers have rattled off three straight clean sheets, outscoring their opponents 14-0 during that span.

The Blazers are on the opposite side of the spectrum, still looking for their first win in the Packerland. They are 2-9 on the year and 0-8 in the Packerland Conference, with their last victory coming against Faith Christian Academy on September 2nd.

Bryan Mazur and Dylan Kaye will host the call on U-102.1, beginning at 4:15 p.m. with the pregame show, followed by the first touch at 4:30 p.m.

Storm Rolls over Eagles on U-102.1

For the second week in a row, the Kewaunee Storm shut out their opponent. This week's victims were the Southern Door Eagles, defeated by the score of 42-0 in Kewaunee on Friday night.

Once again, the Storm offense would explode, setting the game into a running clock early in the first half. The first drive of the game would need just five plays, and less than two and a half minutes to put the first score on the board via a 25-yard Brett Paulsen to Connor Kilgore pass.  After forcing the Eagles offense into a three-and-out punt, the Storm would tack on another touchdown on a single-play drive when Kilgore found Alec Carlson for a 40-yard touchdown.

Brett Paulsen would also add a 4-yard rushing touchdown, and Connor Kilgore would return an interception for a 40-yard touchdown to set the score at 28-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter would be more of the same.   Paulsen threw two more touchdowns, one to Carlson and one to Diesel Bosdeck. Bosdeck would also have an interception in the 2nd quarter.

Neither the Storm nor the Eagles did much with the ball in the second half, choosing instead to use much of the play clock on nearly every play to wind down the running clock for the entire second half.  The only play of note in the second half was a final play of the game interception by Kilgore to put the exclamation point on the Storm's home field victory.

With victories in their next two games, Kewaunee will claim the title in the Packerland Conference.  Those games will take place next week, featuring a road matchup against Peshtigo and a Week 9 matchup back at home against Menominee.

Southern Door will return home next week to take on the Sturgeon Bay Clippers on Friday night. That game can be heard with Jacob Nate taking you through the action starting at 6:45 pregame, followed by the 7:00 kickoff.

Kewaunee's Miller wins Panther Invite

It helped the Storm finish in a tie for third place with 75 points, 12 points behind champion Southern Door. Natalie Miller and Kaylyn Martin broke 22 minutes to finish in the Top 15. On the boys' side, Gage Vlies led the way with a time of 19:28 to finish in 31st place.
