Storm softball picks up first win against Chilton

The Kewaunee softball team got their season off on the right foot before Friday's snows with an 8-2 victory.

The Storm were quieted by Tigers' bullpen after  Kendra Zahn held them to just one run and three hits across three innings. Before that, the Storm opened the game with a four-run first inning followed by two more in the third inning.

Sophia Pingel went 3-3 for the Tigers with a run scored.

Storm track team secures four event wins

Plenty of gold made the trip home to Kewaunee after Thursday's Hebert Invite at Manitowoc Lincoln High School.

Christopher Cullen (400m), Maddix Mueller (high jump and triple jump), and the 4x200m relay took home first-place finishes. DJ Echos, Braxton Riha, the 4x160m relay, the 4x400m relay, and Owen Carlson also posted top-five finishes in the meet. The Storm was the top-performing local team with 68 points, which was good for third place overall as they sat behind the host Ships (90.5 pts) and Appleton East (74 pts).

Kewaunee softball battles Chilton on the road

The Kewaunee softball team opens its 2024 campaign on the road when they play Chilton at 4:30 p.m.

The Storm finished last year with a loss in regionals to Southern Door and a 10-13 record. The team welcomes back underclassmen Breanna Riha, Lexi Hanrahan, Bailey Saxby, and upperclassmen Jenna Rohr, all of whom made All-Packerland Conference squads a year ago.

The Tigers finished last season 19-4 but had their hearts broken in the regional final against Mishicot to end their season early. They tied New Holstein for the Eastern Conference title.

Kewaunee boys nearly win ADE Invitational

The Kewaunee boys track team took second place and the girls finished in fourth in their first track meet of the year at Ripon College in the ADE Invitational on Friday.

The Storm boys were aided by nine top five finishes, including event wins by Christopher Cullen (800m), Maddix Mueller (high jump), and the 4x200 relay. Owen Carlson, Braxton Riha, Mitchel Boeder, and two other relays also posted top five performances. For the girls, nine athletes finished in the top five. No one won individual titles, but Rylee Dax came close twice as she came in second place in the 400m and 4x800m relay.

Kewaunee alum impresses at NFL Combine

One of the most impressive showings by an offensive lineman in the history of the NFL Combine belongs to Kewaunee alum and former Wisconsin Badger Tanor Bortolini.

According to X's Kent Lee Platte (@MathBomb, Picture Below), Tanor Bortolini scored a Relative Athletic Score of 9.97 out of 10, which is ranked sixth out of the more than 1400 offensive guards to participate in the NFL Combine from 1987 to 2024.  He registered one of the few 40-yard dash times under five seconds and posted elite level scores in the shuttle, three cone, vertical jump, and broad jump drills.

The NFL Draft is scheduled for April 25th-27th in Detroit.

Kewaunee eliminated in heartbreaking fashion on 104.1 WRLU

The Kewaunee Storm boys' basketball season has ended after a heartbreaking loss to the Oconto Blue Devils on Friday evening, falling 65-64 on 104.1 WRLU.

Kewaunee won the opening tip and scored in the first three seconds on a pair of Thomas Stangel free throws. From there, though, Oconto went on a 12-0 run until a Braxton Riha layup at 13:54 in the first half. The Storm would answer back with a run of its own, going on a 9-0 run to bring Kewaunee back within 2 points.  After the opening half of play, Oconto went into the locker room with a 37-30.

The second half was as action-packed as the first, as Oconto and Kewaunee traded runs back and forth.  Oconto’s Carter Koch and Kewaunee’s Braxton Riha were forced to sit most of the second half due to foul trouble, each having four early in the second half.  Riha returned to the game with 10 minutes remaining and gave the Storm a boost, cutting the game to a 2-point Blue Devils lead.  Koch re-entered with just under 7 minutes left and led Oconto to emerge with a 10-point lead, 62-52, with 5:08 left in regulation.  Koch would foul out in under 4 minutes, opening the door for one last Kewaunee comeback attempt.  Oconto missed several bonus free throw attempts as Kewaunee was able to capitalize, pulling within 2 points at 65-63 in the final seconds.  Another Blue Devils miss allowed the Storm one final chance.  Braxton Riha was fouled with 0.6 seconds left in regulation and went to the free throw line with an opportunity to tie the game.  Riha made the first but missed the second, and the final horn would sound as Kewaunee scrambled to the ball for a final attempt.

Kewaunee was led by Thomas Stangel’s 24 points and Connor Kilgore’s 15-point efforts in the defeat.  Carter Koch led the way for the victorious Blue Devils with 19 points.  Oconto moves on to the WIAA Division 4 Regional Finals, hosting Weyauwega-Fremont on Saturday night.

Kewaunee’s season comes to an end with a 17-8 record.  Thomas Stangel, Braxton Riha, Christopher Cullen, and Collin Spranger are graduating this spring.
