Kewaunee begins road to Grand Chute vs. New Holstein Tuesday

Another trip to Fox Cities Stadium this season is the goal for the Kewaunee Storm baseball team that opens WIAA Tournament play on Tuesday against New Holstein as a top seed in the Division 3 field.

Featuring sweeps over Southern Door and Gibraltar, the Storm ended their season winning 11 of their last 13 games. Those two games saw the Storm play up one division against the defending state champion Denmark Vikings and up two division to play state-ranked Bay Port. Kewaunee had several players named to the All-Packerland Conference team including Player of the Year and unanimous FIrst team selection (pitcher) Cal Ihlenfeldt, fellow First-Teamers Payton Kohnle (infield) and Owen Carlson (outfield), Second-Teamers Tom Stangel (pitcher), Ethan Paplham (catcher), Braxton Riha (infield), and Sawyer Pribek (outfield), and Honorable Mention designees Colin Spranger (infield), Caleb Schaller (utility/DH) and Mitchell Thompson (utility/DH).

The Huskies enter the game fresh off a 7-1 win over the Lourdes Academy to improve their season mark to 10-11. Their season mark mirrors what they did to close the season, splitting their final 10 games.

First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

Storm baseball finishes regular season at Chilton

The Kewaunee Storm will head out of town for their regular season finale when they visit Chilton.

The Kewaunee Storm outhit their opponents 12-3 in their 9-2 romp over the Reedsville Panthers Saturday afternoon at home. The Storm struck first with three runs in the second inning and countered the Panther's two-run response with four more in the bottom half to put the game away. Nine different Storm players registered hits in the game, including three by Caleb Schaller and two by Payton Kohnle. The pair of hit leaders each tripled but it was Mitchell Thompson's two-run shot in the third that was the game's biggest blow. Five others drove in at least one run. Sawyer Ubersox led the Panthers with one of his two hits drive in their only runs of the game in the third inning.

The Tigers are 21-1 on the campaign this season, having not lost since the second game of a doubleheader against Pewaukee on March 31st in a one-run decision.

The first pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.

Storm's hit parade pounces Panthers

Brady Pribek picked up the win for the Storm, pitching five innings of three-hit ball, allowing two runs to score while striking out six.

Kewaunee storms past Peshtigo to outright Packerland title

The Kewaunee Storm left no doubt who the Packerland Conference champions were, blowing past the Peshtigo Bulldogs on the baseball diamond in 14-0 and 7-1 routs.

In game one, Cal Ihlenfeldt held the Bulldogs to just three hits while striking out eight across five innings. Ihlenfeldt was great at the plate as well, going 3-3 with two doubles and two RBI. Caleb Schaller also registered two doubles while driving in three runs while Thomas Stangel collected four RBI going 1-3 with a triple. Four others drove in at least one run.

In game two, the Storm blew the game open late with a tally in the fifth and three runs in the sixth after leading 3-1 after three innings. Payton Kohnle and Owen Carlson each drove in two runs, with the latter doing so on a home run in the sixth inning. Ihlenfeldt, Schaller, and Ethan Paplham each drove in one run. Bryce Heroux's RBI single in the third was the lone blemish on the pitching staff for the Storm. Schaller went the distance, allowing just the one run on three hits while striking out 10 Bulldogs in the process.

The Storm return to action on Saturday when they host Reedsville at 11 a.m. The Panthers are 6-10 on the year and have lost three in a row since beating Hilbert/Stockbridge on May 5th.

Kewaunee baseball looks to clinch outright title Friday

The Kewaunee Storm will look to keep rolling as they take on the Peshtigo Bulldogs for a doubleheader on Friday.

Although a loss to Bay Port may have slowed some momentum, the Storm still have the taste of the biggest win of the season for them still lingering as they swept Southern Door 4-3 and 10-6 on Tuesday. Kewaunee will need to win just one of the two game doubleheader  on Friday to clinch the outright Packerland Conference title.

Peshtigo will look to play spoiler for the Storm, and help out the Eagles who will need Kewaunee to lose both games to get a share of the title. Peshtigo has struggled so far this season after the departure of now Sturgeon Bay Head Coach Neal Henrigillis, as the Bulldogs are 4-12 overall and 4-10 in the Packerland Conference.

First pitch from Kewaunee is slated for 5:00 p.m.

Kewaunee softball plays final tune-up against Wrightstown

The Kewaunee Storm softball team will play one more tune-up game against the Wrightstown Tigers on Thursday before they take on the Southern Door Eagles in the playoffs.

Kewaunee was recently swept in their War on the Shore series with the Algoma Wolves when they lost 5-4 and 17-3 to their rivals. Those losses brought the Storm’s overall record to 10-11 and 8-8 in the Packerland Conference. One last tune up will be needed for Kewaunee, who have been losers of five straight games including an 8-6 loss to Southern Door, their round one opponent.

Wrightstown has done a complete three-sixty on their season, moving their record to 10-12. After starting the year 1-10, the Tigers rattled off seven straight wins in the middle of the year to save their season and earn them a five seed in the top half of the Division 3 Sectional 2 bracket. The Tigers will look to add one more win to the column before they begin their trip through the playoffs next Tuesday.

First pitch from Kewaunee is set for 4:00 p.m.

Storm baseball falls to Bay Port

The Kewaunee Storm were shut out by the Bay Port Pirates 10-0 on Tuesday in a non-conference baseball game in Green Bay.  The Storm were coming off a doubleheader sweep over Southern Door on Monday, beating the Eagles 4-3 and 10-6 to seize control of the Packerland Conference top spot.  The Storm were able to hang with Bay Port early but the Pirates were able to tack on six runs late in the game to come away with the 10-0 win.  Kewaunee (14-0, 18-4 overall) will now host Peshtigo in a doubleheader on Friday with a chance to clinch the Packerland Conference.

Storm, Eagles battle for top of Packerland baseball standings

The battle for the top of the Packerland baseball table occurs in Kewaunee on Monday when Southern Door makes the trip to battle the Storm.

The Storm has won three of their last four games, including Saturday's 7-4 victory against Gibraltar at Fox Cities Stadium. The Vikings opened the scoring in the first inning when Rylan Caldecott took advantage of a wild pitch to make it 1-0. The Storm answered when Mitchel Thompson's single drove in Payton Kohnle. After the Vikings went 1-2-3 in their half of the second inning, the Storm batted around against Bennett Isaacson with Caleb Schaller, Collin Spranger, Kohnle, Owen Carlson, and Cal Ihlenfeldt recording hits. The Storm's Waylon Delain ended any hope of a threat in the seventh inning, striking out the side to end the game.

The Eagles ran their winning streak to nine with a doubleheader sweep of Winneconne on Saturday. A 3-2 loss to St. Mary Catholic on April 22nd remains the lone blemish on the Eagle's record this season, having gone a perfect 10-0 so far in the Packerland Conference.

The doubleheader is slated to begin at 4 p.m.

Packerland Conference takes over St. Norbert for championships

The best of the Packerland Conference track will be decided Monday at St. Norbert College.

Algoma, Sturgeon Bay, Gibraltar, Kewaunee, NEW Lutheran/Providence Academy, Oconto, Peshtigo, Sevastopol, and Southern Door will all take over Donald Schneider Stadium on the campus of St. Norbert College beginning at 3 p.m. with the first events.

Last year, the Kewaunee boys and the Sturgeon Bay girls posted convincing wins for their respective team titles when the meet was held at Southern Door.

Kewaunee battles Gibraltar at Fox Cities Stadium on 105.1 The GOAT

Kewaunee and Gibraltar will play for their third time in a week, but this time will be in a much different location than their home fields.

The Storm and the Vikings will battle each other at Fox Cities Stadium for the second year in a row. Both head coaches, Daniel Spranger for Kewaunee and Jay Kita for Gibraltar plan on bringing bigger rosters to the home of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to give them a memorable experience.

In their previous matchups, Gibraltar could not generate the offense needed to mask their mistakes in the field on Tuesday losing both ends of a doubleheader to Kewaunee by the scores of 10-1 and 9-1. Both teams are coming off non-conference losses, with the Storm losing to Denmark on Thursday and the Vikings falling to Mishicot on Friday.

Tim Kowols will have the call on 105.1 The GOAT, NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com, and 1051TheGOAT.com beginning at 4:15 p.m. and the first pitch at 4:30 p.m. or following the conclusion of the South Bend Cubs/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers game.

Kewaunee softball prepares for matchup against Peshtigo

The Kewaunee Storm have played two games this week but still have plenty of rest ahead of their games against Peshtigo on Friday.

The Kewaunee softball team needed less than four innings in either game to dismantle Gibraltar by scores of 22-1 and 16-0 on Tuesday afternoon. The Storm batted around twice in the first inning, scoring 15 runs as the Vikings pitchers struggled with control for a second straight game. Emily Todd, Braelyn Chevalier, Morton Bootz, Vivian Bootz, and Baleigh Saxby all knocked in runs with singles en route as a part of a 14-hit day. Breanna Riha and Saxby each drove in two runs on the day. In game two, the Storm scored 10 runs in the second and four more in the third to end the game short. All but one starter registered at least one hit and scored at least one run in the game. Todd was perfect at the plate, going 3-3 with three runs scored and four more driven in. Chevalier went 2-3 but also drove in four runs as both homered in the game. Hanrahan earned the win with just two hits allowed and three strikeouts across two innings of work.

The Bulldogs had a similar experience against Sturgeon Bay on Tuesday, going the minimum against the Clippers in 10-0 and 13-0 wins. They remain a perfect 16-0 on the season, including a 12-0 mark in the Packerland.

First pitch is slated for 4:30 p.m.

Storm baseball can't keep up with Vikings

The Denmark Vikings showed the Kewaunee Storm why they are the defending champions, outscoring their hosts 10-1 after the first inning en route to a 13-4 victory.

The Storm and the Vikings exchanged three-run innings in the game's first stanza with Owen Carlson hitting a home run and Sawyer Pribek tying the game on a two-run single. The Storm would not score again until a Cal Ihlenfeldt homer in the fifth inning when they were down 7-3. The Vikings would answer that call with five runs in the sixth inning and a single tally in the seventh.

The Vikings as a whole had 14 hits with four players with multi-hit days. Izaac Dittmer went 3-5 with four RBI while Rheis Johnson was a perfect 4-4 with two RBI.

Pribek took the loss for the Storm, allowing six runs on six hits across three innings. All four pitchers used by the Storm gave up at least one earned run.

The Storm will be back in action on Saturday when they play Gibraltar at Fox Cities Stadium. Tim Kowols and Jacob Nate will have the call on 105.1 The GOAT and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 4:15 p.m. followed by the first pitch at approximately 4:30 p.m. depending on the length of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers/South Bend Cubs matchup.

Storm baseball takes on the champs at home

The Kewaunee Storm baseball will take on some of its toughest competition of the season on Thursday when they welcome the defending state champion Denmark Vikings to Kewaunee.

The Storm swept a double header on Tuesday from Gibraltar by the scores of 10-1 and 9-1. In the first game, the Vikings committed seven errors while the Storm scored in every inning but the seventh to win 10-1. Owen Carlson led the way offensively for the Storm, going 2-4 with three RBI while Payton Kohnle, Cal Ihlenfeldt, Mitchell Thompson, Caleb Schaller, and Braxton Riha all knocked in one of their own. Ihlenfeldt went the distance, striking out 10 Vikings with an RBI hit by Rylan Caldecott his lone blemish on the afternoon. Noah Greene took the loss as he gave up four runs across three innings. In game two, the Vikings cut down on their mistakes but the hits kept coming for Kewaunee as they won 9-1. The Storm registered 12 hits in the contest, led by Carlson's three knocks to go along with another two RBI. Ihlenfeldt went 2-4 with three RBI. Braden Kita led the Vikings offensively in game two, going 2-3 with a home run in the sixth inning. Schaller nearly matched Ihlenfeldt's effort in the second game by going six innings, allowing a run but striking 10 out along the way. Bennett Isaacson took the loss, allowing five runs across four innings.

The Vikings picked up where they left off from last season, going 17-2 on the year so far and nursing a six game winning streak. They have not dropped a game to a team hailing from northeast Wisconsin yet, losing to Hudson earlier in the season in Mauston and falling most recently to Pewaukee at home on April 27th.

First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.

Kewaunee track teams finish top 3 in Algoma Invite

The Kewaunee track teams threatened to take the top of the leaderboard on Tuesday at the Algoma Invitational with each squad finishing in the top three overall.

For the second-place boys' team, Kemper Robinson (discus), Mitchell Swagel (pole vault), and the 4x400m and 4x800m relay teams took first place in the meet. Nathan Schlough picked up a pair of runner-up finishes with personal records in the 100m and 200m while Christopher Cullen had a similar fate in the 400m and 800m. The squad as a whole had 14 top-three performances.

The girls took third place with Hannah Miller winning the triple jump and being a part of the victorious 4x200m relay. Seven other events had Storm athletes finish in the top three.

Kewaunee storms past Gibraltar on softball diamond

The Kewaunee softball team needed less than four innings in either game to dismantle Gibraltar by scores of 22-1 and 16-0 on Tuesday afternoon.

The Storm batted around twice in the first inning, scoring 15 runs as the Vikings pitchers struggled with control for a second straight game. Emily Todd, Braelyn Chevalier, Morton Bootz, Vivian Bootz, and Baleigh Saxby all knocked in runs with singles en route as a part of a 14-hit day. Breanna Riha and Saxby each drove in two runs on the day. Riha allowed one run on no hits with Pam Prescott driving in the only run on an RBI fielder's choice.

Abby Jarosh and Megan Gallant collected the only hits on the day for the Vikings in the second game.

Kewaunee baseball heads north to face Gibraltar

The Kewaunee Storm brings an eight-game winning streak with them to Fish Creek on Tuesday when they play Gibraltar in a doubleheader.

The Storm swept a doubleheader from Algoma last Tuesday by scores of 14-0 and 13-3. In game one, Payton Kohnle and Cal Ihlenfeldt each drove in five runs, combining to go 7-for-8 with two home runs. Ihlenfeldt did not need the offense, as he pitched four innings, allowing just one hit while striking out six Wolves. In game two, The Storm trailed by one until the fourth inning when they scored eight runs in the frame and followed it up with five more runs in the fifth inning. Mitchell Thompson went 2-4 with three RBI while Ihlenfeldt went 1-3 with two RBI. Four others drove in at least one run.

The Gibraltar Vikings baseball team scored 10 runs across their final two frames to run away from Hilbert 13-3 in seven innings. Freshman phenom Aaron Brey led the Vikings offensively with three hits and four RBI on the afternoon.  Bennett Isaacson and Aiden Purinton each added two hits while seven players had at least one RBI. Pitching-wise, it was a bullpen day with six different pitchers throwing no more than 1 2/3 innings. The staff allowed just one earned run and four hits while garnering nine strikeouts.

The doubleheader begins at  4 p.m.

Storm track up for the competition at Two Rivers

They did not have the same hardware they earned the day before at Peshtigo, but the Kewaunee Storm track teams performed well at their second invite in as many days at Two Rivers.

The Storm boys posted eight top-three performances on the afternoon. Jordan Lamack (high jump), Isaac Schlies (300m hurdles), and the 4x200m relay earned event victories for the Storm.

The Storm girls had three top-three performances, with Hannah Miller's personal best in the triple jump the lone event victory.

Storm softball set for test facing Eagles

Looking to bounce back from a tough doubleheader at the hands of the Sevastopol Pioneers, the Kewaunee Storm softball team will take on the Southern Door Eagles Friday afternoon.

After falling to those Pioneers 12-2 and 7-2, Kewaunee has lost three of their last five games, after starting their season on a 5-1 note. At 7-4, the Storm sit fourth in the Packerland Conference, just a game behind the Eagles of Southern Door, who they could pass Friday night. Kewaunee lost to Southern Door in both games last season, losing 10-3 and 7-6.

The Eagles are coming off of a sweep of the Sturgeon Bay Clippers on Tuesday by scores of 11-0 and 17-2. At 9-4 overall and 6-4 in the Packerland Conference, the Eagles are just one win in conference play away from matching their total from last season. Southern Door has scored the most runs of any team in the conference, scoring 115 runs over their 10 conference games.

The first pitch from Kewaunee of game one of the doubleheader is set for 4:00 p.m.

Packerland baseball battle features Storm and Eagles

The top two teams in the Packerland Conference will face off on Friday as the Kewaunee Storm are set to host the Southern Door Eagles in a showdown.

The Storm enters the doubleheader with Southern Door at 13-2 overall and 10-0 in the Packerland Conference. Kewaunee is riding an eight game winning streak going into the matchup, and have won 13 out of their last 14 games. The Storm may have the hardest part of their schedule this season coming up, with two doubleheaders against Southern Door and Gibraltar, and then taking on reigning state champions Denmark on Monday.

Southern Door has taken just one loss on the season, falling to St. Mary’s Catholic. The Eagles are 9-1 overall and 8-0 in the Packerland Conference, looking to take over the lead of the Packerland. Southern Door will have had six days off since their last game, after their doubleheader on Tuesday against Sturgeon Bay was rescheduled to May 22nd. The two teams have excelled throughout the first two sports seasons, and are set for another strong matchup on the diamond.

First pitch of the doubleheader from Kewaunee is slated for 4:00 p.m.
