Bortolini medals in shot put

Kewaunee's Tanor Bortolini capped off a big week Friday with a fourth place finish in the boy's shot put in Division 2.

Bortolini threw 51'5 to clinch the podium position, which was about five and a half feet off the best throw of the day by Zach Strouf of Rice Lake.

A medal and an oral commitment to play football for the Wisconsin Badgers makes for a nice week for the Kewaunee junior.

You can find this question in the DoorCountyDailyNews.com E-paper. If you answer correctly through the E-paper, you have an opportunity to win a $25 certificate to The Grove in Kewaunee.

The answer will be posted at 7 AM on Saturday.

Kewaunee football looks to repeat success of 2010

Kewaunee's spring sports seasons are winding down and football will be here sooner than you think. The Storm will begin the 2019 season on Friday, August 23rd when they host Kiel. They'll look to repeat as conference champions and hope to have the same playoff success they did in 2010. That year the Storm won the state championship behind quarterback Doug Delebreau and running back Craig Christman. Delebreau threw for over 2,200 yards and 27 touchdowns. Christman came one yard shy of 2,000 yards on the season and 28 touchdowns.

High School Sports Trivia Contest Question of the Day 5-24-19

Friday's trivia question is, "Doug Delebreau was Kewaunee's leading passer when they won the state championship in 2010. Who led the Storm with almost 2,000 yards rushing that season?"

You can find this question in the DoorCountyDailyNews.com E-paper. If you answer correctly through the E-paper, you have an opportunity to win a $25 certificate to The Grove in Kewaunee.

The answer will be posted at 7 AM on Saturday.

Kewaunee softball wins regional championship

It took them an extra two innings to do it, but the Kewaunee Storm was able to clinch a date in the sectionals next week with a 5-4 victory over Chilton Thursday.

The game was tied at two heading into the ninth inning when the Storm was able to push across three runs in the top half and only giving up two in the bottom half to keep the Tigers away from holding the Regional trophy.

Hailey Gaedtke earned the game ball in this one, striking out seven in the complete game while also driving in two runs on two hits.

Kewaunee holds of Southern Door in baseball playoff opener

The Kewaunee Storm almost saw its six-run lead disappear in a 6-5 win over conference rival Southern Door in the opening game of the WIAA Baseball playoffs.

The Storm scored five of its six runs in the top of the third with the big blow coming from a two-run double by Nathan Van Goethem. A Wyatt Kruse single in the top of the fourth drove in Jack Severin to make a 6-0, an insurance run that would loom larger a few innings later. The Eagles score three runs in the bottom of the fifth and another pair in the seventh before Wyatt Kruse struck out Austin Vandertie with two on to end the threat and the game.

State on the line for track athletes

A trip to LaCrosse hangs in the balance Thursday afternoon when dozens of local athletes head to two sectional sites for a chance to qualify for the state meet.

The top four in each event at the sectional meets qualify for state, but an athlete can also make it if they post one of the top 8 scores in the state on Thursday.

Storm nearly completes comeback against Denmark

No one would have blamed Kewaunee if they packed it in after giving up 12 runs in the first two innings of their baseball game Monday, but no one told them that.

The Storm would eventually fall 12-8, but showed a lot of heart in the final six frames to make the game closer than it appeared after those opening frames. Cain Hall led the way for Kewaunee with two hits.

Kewaunee softball sweeps Sevastopol

The Kewaunee softball team busted out the lumber in a pair of victories over visiting Sevastopol on Monday.

In game one, Hailey Gaedtke had a pair of extra base hits including a home run in an 18-3 victory. Mykenzi Uhlers, Emma Hallgren and Elizabeth Rohr also joined Gaedtke's hit parade, each collecting a pair of hits. Claire Kohnle picked up the win.

In game two it was Gaedtke picking up the win from the circle in a 6-4 win over the Pioneers. Hallgren drove in three runs in the second half of the doubleheader while Taylor Schleis knocked in two of her own.

Kewaunee hosts Packerland Track Championships

All eyes will be on Kewaunee High School this afternoon when the Packerland Conference's nine schools compete for a track championship.

The Sturgeon Bay boys and the Algoma girls look to repeat as conference champions after winning last year's title at the home of the Wolves. The Clippers were led by two of its relay teams taking the event titles and top 3 performance in nearly all the field events thanks to Rex Meikle. Speaking of field events, it was there where the Wolves girls did their damage, winning four of the seven. Katelyn Williams was the star of last year's conference championships, not just winning titles in the shot put and discus but also winning the 100M and 4 X 100M relay events.

The action begins at 3:30 p.m.

Kewaunee baseball picks up rivalry victory

The Kewaunee baseball sent Storm fans that traveled up the coast to Algoma home happy. They were able to pick up a win by the smallest of margins on Saturday. The final score was 4-3.

The Storm will play a home game against Southern Door on Tuesday at 5 PM.

Kewaunee softball comes up just short in War on the Shore

Hailey Gaedtke and Mykenzi Uhlers' great performances couldn't quite lead Kewaunee to a rivalry victory against Agloma on Saturday. It was an admirable effort on the road against one of the best teams in the Packerland Conference. The Wolves won it on a walk-off single in the seventh 2-1. Gaedtke was pitching and only allowed those two runs in 6 1/3 innings striking out three. Uhlers did the damage on offense hitting a home run in the fifth inning but that was all the Storm could muster on the day.

Kewaunee will host Sevastopol on Monday.

Reminiscing on a great track season

It's hard to have a better season than Hannah Lamack had for Kewaunee track and field in 2017. She broke school records in the 1600M Run and 3200M Run. Her time in the 1600M was 5:23.56 while for the 3200M it was 11:46.70.

Lamack was the correct answer to Friday's trivia question. Congratulations to Jason Karnopp who answered it correctly! Jason will win a $25 certificate to The Grove in Kewaunee.

Stangel gets only hits in Kewaunee baseball doubleheader sweep

Other than Daniel Stangel, the bats fell silent for Kewaunee as the baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader Monday to NEW Lutheran 2-1 and 5-0.

Stangel's two hits in game one kept it close until the final batter when Sam Meerstein won the game for the Blazers on a walkoff double.

It was Meerstein playing the devil again for the Storm in game two, this time allowing only the one hit to Stangel in the shut-out victory.

Kewaunee softball wins a thriller

Seven innings were not enough for Kewaunee and Oconto in softball on Friday. Elizabeth Rohrs hit a two-out walk-off single in eighth inning to give the Storm a 6-5 win. Hailey Gaedtke had a big day at the plate for Kewaunee going 3-for-4 with two doubles. Claire Kohnle pitched all eight innings to get the win.

The Storm have Saturday and Sunday off before a doubleheader at Green Bay NEW Lutheran on Monday.

Tannor Bortolini and Nick Baumgartner are winners at Two Rivers

Kim Wiley scored four goals in that game for the Storm as they won in a route 5-0. Wiley was the answer to Friday's trivia question.

Kewaunee soccer loses to NEW Lutheran

NEW Lutheran scored three unanswered goals en route to 4-2 Packerland girls soccer victory over Kewaunee.

The Storm gave themselves a 1-0 lead early, but could not keep track of Abbey Czaja. She tallied a hat trick while Lydia Nelson put the game well out of reach with the Blazers' fourth goal.
