Kewaunee track teams sparkle at Oconto Falls

The Kewaunee track teams brought home plenty of hardware on Thursday, including the boys winning the title and the girls coming in second place.

For the boys, Maddix Mueller produced the only event win in the triple jump, but 13 other top three performances helped the Storm keep their point total high.

The girls saw Fany Pecout continue her impressive junior season with wins in the 100m and 200m with personal records and another career best in the discus to take second. Hannah Miller won the triple jump and the 400m while Jessica Barnica captured top honors in the 100m hurdles.

Storm baseball finishes off Blazers

The Kewaunee Storm baseball team needed an extra day, but it was worth the wait as they shut out NEW Lutheran 8-0.

The Storm only needed one run to beat the Blazers as Thomas Stangel and Ayden Smidle combined to throw a no-hitter in the continuation from Tuesday's second game. Stangel was the one who earned the victory, striking out seven batters across four innings. Braxton Riha led the way offensively, knocking in a run with three hits including a double. Payton Kohnle and Cal Ihlenfeldt each doubled as one of their two hits in the rout.

Kewaunee softball gears up for critical series with Sevastopol

Two of the top teams in the Packerland Conference softball standings will collide Friday night in Kewaunee as the Storm and the Sevastopol Pioneers play a doubleheader.

Kewaunee has been elite as of late, as after splitting the weekend series with Oconto, the Storm bounced back to beat Green Bay NEW Lutheran/Providence Academy 10-0 and 12-2 in their doubleheader. After being blown out in the opening game of the season by Chilton, who is now 6-2, the Storm have rolled over teams to a 7-2 record.

Sevastopol’s season has been all over the place, as they enter the doubleheader with a 9-4 overall record and a 5-3 record in conference. The Pioneers took care of the winless Sturgeon Bay Clippers 3-1 and 9-1 on Tuesday, but had lost four straight before that game to Southern Door, Peshtigo and Mishicot. This will be a test for both Kewaunee and Sevastopol, and shake up the standings after Friday.

First pitch from game one is slated for 4:00 p.m.

Storm baseball hosts doubleheader against Pioneers

The Kewaunee Storm baseball team will look to stay undefeated in Packerland Conference play, while their opponent, the Sevastopol Pioneers, look to grab their first win on Friday.

The Storm recently took down the NEW Lutheran/Providence Academy Blazers in the first game of their doubleheader, and had their second game delayed due to darkness, with the Storm leading the way at 6-0. Kewaunee enters the doubleheader at a 8-2 record, and sits third in the Packerland Conference.

Sevastopol led the Sturgeon Bay Clippers through three innings in the opening game of the two game doubleheader by a score of 2-1, but Sturgeon Bay scored 10 in the fourth to blow the game wide open. The Pioneers are 0-9 on the season, and have been outscored by 73 runs in their eight Packerland Conference games.

First pitch from Kewaunee for game one is set for 4:00 p.m.

Kewaunee soccer opens season with Blazers

The Kewaunee Storm girls soccer team will begin their season against Green Bay NEW Lutheran/Providence Academy on Thursday.

Kewaunee was 0-2-1 last season, and had nine games canceled throughout the season last year. The Storm have five games on the schedule this season, with the Blazers being scheduled for two games, Sturgeon Bay with one after their opening game on April 20th was canceled, and have Sevastopol/Gibraltar on the schedule as well.

The Green Bay NEW Lutheran/Providence Academy Blazers picked up their first win of the season last time they were on the field, defeating Clintonville 7-1 on Tuesday. The Blazers fell to Sevastopol 1-0 in their last local game.

The match is set to begin at 4:30 p.m.

Storm softball looks to continue momentum against Blazers

The Kewaunee Storm softball team have turned around their season after a rocky start, and will look to add more wins to their record against NEW Lutheran/Providence Academy.

Kewaunee last took the field when they faced the Oconto Blue Devils over the weekend, and will want to get the momentum back that they had building throughout the season. The Storm will enter the matchup with the Blazers at a 5-1 record and 4-0 in the Packerland Conference. NEW Lutheran fell to Stockbridge/Hilbert 5-2 on Monday, and pushed their record to 2-4 overall.

Tuesday's doubleheader in Green Bay is set to start at 4:30 p.m.

Kewaunee baseball slated for series with Blazers

The Kewaunee Storm baseball team will take on the NEW Lutheran/Providence Academy Blazers in a doubleheader on Tuesday.

Kewaunee is coming off of a doubleheader sweep of Oconto over the weekend, and have moved to 4-0 in the Packerland conference ahead of the doubleheader with the Blazers. The Storm have once again put themselves as a contender this season. NEW Lutheran fell to Sturgeon Bay over the weekend as well in both of the games of the doubleheader, having their overall record fall to 3-5 and 1-5 in the Packerland Conference.

First pitch of the doubleheader from Green Bay is slated for 4:30 p.m.

Storm baseball set for Oconto doubleheader

After falling to Manitowoc Lincoln 11-1, the Kewaunee Storm will look to bounceback on Friday afternoon when they host the Oconto Blue Devils for a Packerland Confernece doubleheader.

The Storm fell down 7-0 to the Ships of Manitowoc Lincoln in the bottom of the first inning after loading the bases after the first three batters of the game for the Ships. Kewaunee would not be able to slow down Lincoln in the inning as walks would be the achilles heal of the Storm. Kewaunee split the two game season series with the Blue Devils last season, losing game one 3-2 but winning game two 10-3.

Oconto is coming off of a weeks rest with their last games coming last Saturday against the Sturgeon Bay Clippers. The Blue Devils will enter the matchup with Kewaunee with a 5-0 overall record and a 4-0 record in the Packerland.

Game one of the doubleheader at Kewaunee is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.

Kewaunee baseball heads to Manitowoc Lincoln

After taking care of their business in the doubleheader with Sturgeon Bay on Tuesday night, the Kewaunee Storm baseball team will be in action against Manitowoc Lincoln on Thursday, weather permitting.

After finishing off Sturgeon Bay by a combined score of 28-0 in the two games played on Tuesday, Kewaunee will look to keep their momentum, and their patient at-bats, rolling against a high quality opponent. The top of the batting order for Kewaunee proved to be a critical part of the doubleheader, making the statements needed, including a 3-Run Home Run from Owen Carlson in the first game.

Manitowoc Lincoln has started their season 7-0 so far, and have gone 5-0 in the Fox River Classic Conference early in the year. The Ships were a strong team last season, being one of the three teams to knock off the Eagles of Southern Door last year. In their FRCC games so far this year, the Ships have outscored their opponents 50-2.

Essay
Throughout high school, I have learned many different qualities while participating in athletics, but also through academics. The biggest lessons I have learned are that if you put the work into anything, the payoff will be great and also that sacrifice can lead to success. No matter what you do in life, if you put in extra work to your job or life you will feel much better and the results will show. Putting in extra work is something I have done almost my whole life and it's something that I enjoy. It gave me a competitive side that I will have for the rest of my life and use in my post high school career. I have always been very competitive in anything that I do. I think that this will allow me to have that mindset later in life and always strive to get better whether it is at my job or in college athletics. Another thing I learned is that sometimes you have to sacrifice things to achieve your goals. Sacrifice can be very hard to do for some people and it was a bit hard for me. However, I knew my end goals and what I wanted to eventually achieve so I knew that at points I would have to sacrifice things in order to take the next step in achieving my goals. These lessons that I have learned while participating in athletics and throughout my high school career will be lessons that I use every day to keep being successful in my life, in college, and during my professional career.

Post-Graduation Plans
Thompson plans to study finance and play football at Minnesota State-Mankato.

The Storm have scored an average of 13 runs per game during their three game winning streak, including 11 in a 11-1 win over Two Rivers on Friday afternoon. Big fifth inning sends Kewaunee baseball to third straight Dells win

An 11-run fifth inning rescued the Kewaunee Storm from the brink in Wisconsin Dells on Saturday, eventually beating St. Mary's Springs 19-10.

Walks were the main culprit going against the Storm as their pitching staff allowed eight free passes while striking out just two. They gave up at least one run in each of the first four innings, including three in the third innings and four in the fourth.

The Storm did post another big inning in the third inning when they plated five with Cal Ihlenfeldt delivering the innings biggest blow in the two-run single. In the 11-run fifth inning, it was small ball that drove in most of the runs. Ihlenfeldt ended the day going 2-3 with five RBI and Owen Carlson went 2-5 with for RBI. Mitchell Thompson and Caleb Schaller each had two RBI.

Kewaunee sweeps Friday set in Wisconsin Dells

Kewaunee swept their two games on Friday in Wisconsin Dells, beating Northwestern 7-5 and shutting out Lake Mills 6-0. They return to action on Saturday morning with a match-up against St. Mary's Springs Academy.

Owen Carlson and Cal Ihlenfeldt each had two RBI while three players had multiple hits. Caleb Schaller went six innings, allowing four earned runs but struck out 11.

In game two, the Storm scored three times in the third and seventh innings to put the game out of reach from the L-Cats. Braxton Riha delivered the game-winning hit in the third inning when he cleared the bases with a double. Payton Kohnle, Carlson, and Ihlenfeldt posted multiple hit games. Ihlenfeldt didn't need much help from the offense as he went the distance for the complete game shutout, allowing just three hits while striking out eight.

The Storm return to action Saturday morning in the Wisconsin Dells when they play St. Mary's Springs.

Kewaunee track boys dominate two meets

Two meets in a week proved to be no problem for the Kewaunee boys' track team as they won both multi-team meets hosted by Southern Door and them.

On Tuesday, the Storm boys beat Southern Door by 116-91 margin in Brussels at the meet that also included Sturgeon Bay and Algoma. In that meet, the girls' team just missed out on second place with 72 points. The game was closely contested through the first three innings, but the top of the fourth inning would be one for Kewaunee to forget. After three were completed, the score was 5-2 Chilton with the Tigers coming up to bat. Maddilyn Mueller would start the scoring in the inning off for Chilton, roping a single into left field scoring two runs. After a walk, Megan Meyers would drive two more home on a double and an error, making the game 9-2. Chilton would continue their high scoring inning with walks and scoring on passed balls and concluded the top of the fourth with a 17-2 lead.

After Braelyn Chevalier came in to score for Kewaunee, Baleigh Saxby piled on another run for the Storm in the bottom of the 5th to make the final score 17-4.

Kewaunee is set to take on Sturgeon Bay next with their game against Two Rivers being postponed.

Kewaunee baseball set for Bonduel

If Mother Nature allows, the Kewaunee baseball team will hit the road Thursday for a game at Bonduel.

Kewaunee softball scheduled to play Chilton

Weather permitting, the Kewaunee softball team will play their first game of the season when they travel to St. Norbert College to face Chilton.

Mother Nature has been the Storm's biggest opponent this season as they have had games postponed against Wrightstown and Valders in the opening weeks of the season. After playing .500 ball during the season, it was the Tigers that ended the Storm's season in the WIAA Regional by an 11-0 score. The Tigers have not played a game this season and that will remain true for the Storm if they can not get Thursday's game in either as their matchup against Two Rivers on Friday has already been postponed.

The first pitch from St. Norbert College in De Pere is set for 1 p.m.

Storm Softball begins season against Valders

The 2023 softball season for the local area will get underway as the Kewaunee Storm will travel to Valders to take on the Vikings Tuesday night.

After their non-conference matchup against the Wrightstown Tigers on March 30th was postponed, the snow melted away and the Storm are able to take the field to begin their season. Last season, Kewaunee finished 8-9 overall and 4-5 in the Packerland Conference. The Storm will have to replace the production of 4 graduating seniors from that team, but according to their roster, will carry nine freshmen on the Varsity team.

The Vikings of Valders were a four seed in the WIAA playoffs last season after finishing the regular season at 13-6 overall and 10-4 in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference. Valders was defeated in the Sectional Semifinal by Wautoma by a score of 3-0. The team graduated five seniors from last year’s regional title team. Valders is set to play Luxemburg-Casco later on in the season as well.

First Pitch from Valders is set for 4:30 p.m.

Kewaunee to host meet Tuesday

The Kewaunee Storm Track and Field team will play host to the area’s first outdoor Track and Field meet this spring, as they will welcome in four other conference schools for the Kewaunee Five Meet.

The Boys team is coming off of a second place finish after tying with Marathon at 47 points, and falling just short of New London at the Rosholt Invite at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Mitchell Swagel (Pole Vault) was the lone second place finisher for the Storm, with Maddix Mueller (Pole Vault) and the 1600m Relay of Christopher Cullen, Isaac Schleis, Jordan Lamack, and Swagel.

The Girls team has been led by Hannah Miller in the indoor season, as she dominated the Pam Kjono Invite on March 24th. Miller finished first in the triple jump, second in the long jump and fourth in the 800 meter run. The team took seventh overall in the invite, and will compete again Tuesday afternoon.

Kewaunee will be welcoming in and competing against Green Bay NEW Lutheran, Peshtigo, Sevastopol and Sturgeon Bay.
