Storm boys welcome Vikings

Kewaunee and Gibraltar will open their Packerland Conference schedules against each other on Thursday night.

 

The Storm narrowly lost to Manitowoc Lutheran 60-56 in their season opener. Thomas Stangel was the top scorer for the Storm with 33 points. Braxton Riha (9 points), Christopher Cullen (6 points), Jerabek (6 points), and Connor Kilgore (2 points) also contributed to the cause in the loss.

 

The Vikings showed the need for a second scoring option on Monday night as they lost to Gillett 60-36. Braden Sitte was the offense for the Vikings, scoring 12 of his team-high 20 points in the first half. Jeffrey Mize scored seven points, and Kayin Jackson added five points in the Vikings' loss. Head coach Travis Ward said it was a role reversal from when the two teams faced each other when the senior-laden Vikings rolled the young Tigers on their way to state.

 

Tip-off in Kewaunee is set for 7:30 p.m.

Kewaunee Boys Varsity Storm Narrowly Fall To Manitowoc Lutheran

The Kewaunee Boys Varsity Storm suffered a close loss, 60-56, versus Manitowoc Lutheran on Tuesday. Thomas Stangel was the top scorer for Kewaunee Boys Varsity Storm with 33 points, but it wasn't enough to secure the win. Kewaunee Boys Varsity Storm went on a 14-point run to start the game. Kewaunee Boys Varsity Storm had a strong start to the game, leading 30-22 at halftime, but couldn't keep up the momentum and ultimately fell short. Stangel poured in 22 points in the first half as Kewaunee Boys Varsity Storm outscored Manitowoc Lutheran 30-22. Stangel and Avery Jerabek each hit multiple three-pointers for Kewaunee Boys Varsity Storm. The team shot 5-13 (38%) from beyond the arc. Stangel made 10 of 11 free throws, and Kewaunee Boys Varsity Storm attempted 23. Kewaunee Boys Varsity Storm blocked thr shots in the game. Additional scorers for Kewaunee Boys Varsity Storm included Braxton Riha (9 points), Christopher Cullen (6 points), Jerabek (6 points), and Connor Kilgore (2 points). Noah Lukasek scored 17 points to lead Manitowoc Lutheran. Will Franzen and Lukasek each hit multiple three-pointers for Manitowoc Lutheran. Franzen (13 points), Wesley Hecker (10 points), Brayden Bennett (7 points), Caden Stanzel (6 points), and Isaiah Muchka (5 points) also pitched in for Manitowoc Lutheran. The Storm plays Gibraltar at home this Thursday.

Kewaunee boys open season at Manitowoc Lutheran

The Kewaunee Storm basketball team opens its year on the road with a non-conference matchup with Manitowoc Lutheran.

 

The Storm is coming off a 17-7 season and a second-place finish in the Packerland Conference. A 69-62 loss to Crivitz ended their year in the WIAA Regional Final. The team will have to lean on unanimous first-team all-Packerland Conference selection Thomas Stangel even more this year after he averaged 17.1 points last season. The departures of Cal Ihlenfeldt and Sawyer Pribek take away the Storm's other top scorers and their leaders in rebounds and assists.

 

Manitowoc Lutheran stomped on Two Rivers 81-53 in its opener, thanks to 14 points from Will Franzen and Jaymen Ott and 11 points from Noah Lukasek and Wesley Hecker.

 

The game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Kewaunee girls play at home against Manitowoc Lutheran

The Kewaunee girls basketball team returns to action on Tuesday when they welcome Manitowoc Lutheran to their home court.

 

The Storm opened their season with a 50-41 win over Wrightstown a week ago. Jadelynn Kroll posted a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds while Gabrielle Stangel added 12 points in the victory over the Tigers.

 

Manitowoc Lutheran won its matchups against Kiel and Winnebago Lutheran to start their season on the right foot. 

 

Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. in Kewaunee.

Kewaunee girls start season on the road at Wrightstown

On Tuesday, the Kewaunee Storm will take to the road to open their season at Wrightstown.

 

The Storm finished the season 10-16 with a loss in the WIAA Regionals to Coleman. While they struggled out of their conference, they went 9-7 in the Packerland Conference. Their top three scorers, Jadelynn Kroll (14.9 ppg), Brianna Demmin (8.7 ppg), and Gabrielle Stangel (6.5 ppg), are available to return.

 

The Tigers went 17-9, falling in sectionals to NEC rival and state participant Freedom. The two sides opened the 2022-2023 season against each other, with the Tigers prevailing 49-26.

 

Tip-off is 7 p.m.

Kewaunee, Darlington battle for state berth on 104.1 WRLU

A trip to Madison is on the line Friday night when Kewaunee and Darlington meet in DeForest in the state semi-finals of the WIAA Division 6 Football Playoffs.

 

The Storm cruised to Level 4 with a 30-0 win over St. Mary's Springs last week. Owen Carlson proved why he was the Packerland Conference's Offensive Player of the Year, rushing for 252 yards and four touchdowns on 29 carries. The defense has also remained stout, allowing just seven points during the team's three-game playoff run. This is the second straight year the Storm finds itself one win away from a state title game berth.

 

The Redbirds come into the contest with just one loss on the year, which came against Prairie du Chien on August 25th. After winning its opening round game 49-14 over Belleville, it has won two close games against Mineral Point (7-0) and Lancaster (28-22). This is the Redbirds' third straight appearance in the state semifinals.

Kewaunee shuts out St. Mary's Springs on 104.1 WRLU

The Kewaunee Storm rolled through St Mary Springs Friday night with a 30-0 win. Owen Carlson showed his talents after being held last week to just a singular touchdown. It was all Carlson against the Ledgers, 4 touchdowns and another performance of over 200 yards. It puts Carlson above 2000 rushing yards in only 12 games. The Storm travel to face Darlington from a neutral site next week. Henry Annen and Reece Robalard will be on 104.1 WRLU for the Level 4 matchup.

Kewaunee tangles with St. Mary Springs on 104.1 WRLU

A second straight trip to a state semifinal is on the line Friday night when Kewaunee welcomes St. Mary Springs to Don Rabas Field.

 

Both teams have demolished their opponents on the way to the matchup with the Storm beating Oconto (42-0) and Cedar Grove-Belgium (42-7) while the Ledgers have beaten Random Lake (42-12) and Howards Grove (41-6). The similarities do not stop there as both teams are undefeated on the season and have yet to give up 100 points on the year. Offensively, the Storm has been a little more potent as they have averaged over 40 points a game, while the Ledgers average over 31 points a game.
