Storm girls thrash Tigers

The bigger gym did not slow down the Kewaunee girls basketball teams as they beat Wrightstown 67-37 at the Kress Events Center as a part of the Shawano Sun Drop Shootout on Monday.

It was the Storm's fifth straight win since losing 70-28 to state power Notre Dame Academy on the road. The Tigers meanwhile have now lost two games in a row after seeing their four-game winning streak snapped.

The Storm are back in action after the New Year when they travel to Luxemburg-Casco for a 7 p.m. matchup.

Boeder shines as three-sport athlete

In a growing era of specialization, there is Kewaunee’s Mitchell Boeder.

At the 2025 WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament, Boeder’s year ended with a fourth-place finish on the podium at the Kohl Center. While many of the state’s place winners may have transitioned to offseason wrestling tournaments, Boeder continued to put on the purple and gold of the Storm.

During the track season, he set personal records in the shot put and discus, missing out on the state meet in La Crosse by five feet in the shot put. His senior football season ended with him becoming a two-time team captain, four-time varsity letter winner, two-time unanimous first-team defensive lineman, two-time first-team offensive lineman, two-time Packerland Offensive Lineman of the Year, two-time all-region offensive lineman and an All-State offensive lineman.

The Bemidji State football commit said all three sports worked together to help make him successful.

According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, the 2025 NFL Draft saw 222 of the 253 athletes selected (88%) participate in multiple sports in high school. After the holiday break, Boeder will return to the mat in Oshkosh when Kewaunee takes on dozens of other teams at the Lourdes Academy On the Water Classic. You can listen to the full interview as part of the weekly Kewaunee County Wrestling Podcast.

Vaughn family, Gerczak lace up for new scholarship

What started as a way to get free sports cleats and shoes to kids in need is becoming much more, especially for one Kewaunee family.

Announced earlier this month, Play 4 Owen, 23’s Cleats 4 Kidz and local artist Zane Statz are collaborating on a new scholarship and award called Laces 4 Life. The initiative will recognize student-athletes from Kewaunee, Algoma, Southern Door, Gibraltar and Sturgeon Bay who are excelling in the classroom and in the community.

The $2,300 scholarship and cleat award honors Owen Vaughn, who died by suicide in February. The three-sport athlete became a source of inspiration for the Kewaunee wrestling and baseball teams as they wrapped up the school year.

A few towns away, 11-year-old Bentley Gerczak has been busy running his organization that helps connect young families with the equipment they need to compete in youth sports. What started as giving back a pair of soccer shoes he had won has grown into donating more than 150 pairs of new shoes and hundreds of used pairs for redistribution.

Gerczak has expanded the mission beyond cleats, collecting shoeboxes filled with nonperishable food items for local pantries. His father, Jim, and Owen’s father, Chris Vaughn, are friends, leading Gerczak to look for ways he could help carry on Owen’s legacy.

That effort included donating the pair of spikes the baseball team brought with them on their run to the state championship. Gerczak didn’t want to stop there, helping organize the scholarship, which will be awarded annually at a special banquet. He hopes other kids will be inspired to find ways to give back and that community members will support them in doing so.

It has not been an easy year for the Vaughn family since losing Owen in February. Chris Vaughn said he is thankful for the community support that rallied around them in the months following, whether through hugs, meals dropped off on their porch or events organized in his son’s honor.

That support helped lead to the creation of Play 4 Owen, which is launching the Owen Vaughn Memorial Scholarship as part of Laces 4 Life while also promoting mental health awareness. Vaughn said the goal is to help ensure no other family goes through what they did and to carry on Owen’s memory.

The Laces 4 Life scholarship application, which includes a nomination from a coach, teacher or other member of a school’s faculty, is due April 15, 2026. More information can be found below.

Storm boys tame Tigers on the road

The Kewaunee boys basketball went on the road to earn a resounding victory Tuesday night, beating Wrightstown 80-61.

The two teams played a tight first half, only to see the Storm pull away in the second half. The Storm dominated most statistical categories such as rebounds (39-25), steals (13-4), and assists (21-13) to lead them to the rout. Diesel Bosdeck, Mason Kovacs, Mason Delebreau, and Conor Kilgore led the assault from behind the arc while Avery Jerabek used his quick hands and speed to set up several fast break opportunities.

The Storm are off until January 2nd when they welcome Howards Grove.

Storm girls tip Blue Jays

The Kewaunee girls basketball team improved to 5-2 on the season with a 65-61 win over Menasha on Tuesday.

Despite being outrebounded by the Blue Jays 38-28, the Storm outshot their opponents 46 percent to 34 percent, including a 37 percent to 25 percent advantage from behind the arc. That strong shooting came handy about halfway through the second half as the Blue Jays closed a nearly double-digit deficit. Summer Walecka hit a three-pointer at the top of the key to spark a 12-3 run that would prove crucia in the end. The Blue Jays would make a charge late, but Ali Repitz secured a key steal late to preserve the victory.

The Storm are back in action on December 29th when they take on Wrightstown at the Kress Events Center on the campus of UW-Green Bay at 12:05 p.m.

Storm girls' basketball hosting Bluejays

The Kewaunee girls’ basketball team is hosting the Menasha Bluejays this Tuesday. The Bluejays are coming off a 46-39 victory over New London. The Storm is returning to the court after a 69-24 victory over Sevastopol. Leading the charge for the Storm this season has been Jade Kroll, averaging 17.6 points per game. Summer Walechka and Gabby Stangel have also been vital to the team, with Walechka averaging 11.0 ppg and Stangel with 9.4 ppg.

The tip-off is at 7:00 PM

Storm boys' basketball traveling to face Tigers

The Kewaunee boys’ basketball team is on the road this Tuesday to face the Wrightstown Tigers. The Tigers are coming off a 67-44 loss to Little Chute. The Storm are looking to continue their win streak, starting the season 5-0, most recently beating Peshtigo 61-57. Leading the Storm was Diesel Bosdeck with 16 points, followed by Conor Kilgore with 15. Avery Jerabek also had 12 points.

The tip-off is at 7:30 PM.
