Thompson in line for state wrestling title for Kewaunee

Kewaunee's Mitchell Thompson is a win away from Kewaunee's first state title since Jack Severin thanks to a pair of victories on Friday.

Thompson did not need a third period in either match, pinning both of his opponents in the second period. Ezra Ducat is also guaranteed a medal after winning his quarterfinal match before falling in the semifinals. Matt Wery could not carry the positive momentum from Thursday into Friday, suffering two second-period pins to end his run at the state meet.

Storm look to keep rolling against Cougars in Second Round

The Kewaunee Storm girls basketball team will look to make it another upset in the WIAA Tournament when they travel to Coleman to take on the Cougars in the Regional Semifinals.

Kewaunee is fresh off of their overtime thriller against Menominee Indian by way of some solid defense in a 59-56 game. Defense has begun to swing the Storm’s season around, and they will look to extend it even further Friday night. Jadelynn Kroll has been a spark of light for this Kewaunee team, but it has been every player rallying around their role leading their run. The Storm would play the winner of Bonduel and Shiocton if they can stun Coleman.

The Cougars have been led by Aubrey Bintz to their 20-4 record and perfect 16-0 Marinette & Oconto Conference record. Coleman fell the last time they were on the court, as they were beaten by Laona/Wabeno before ending up having a first round bye in the playoffs. We will see if the Cougars use the break to right the ship, or if the ship scuttles once again to the hands of the Storm.

Tip from Coleman is set for 7:00 P.M.

Storm girls look for upset at Menominee Indian

The Kewaunee Storm hope they are the team no one wants to face in the playoffs when they open tournament play against Menominee Indian Tuesday night on the road.

The Storm enters the match-up 9-15 with most of those losses coming against bigger schools. They closed out a stretch last Thursday with a 71-45 win over Sturgeon Bay where they won five of their last seven games. Averaging more than 14 points a game, Jade Kroll is in the top two of the scoring, rebounding, and assists per game categories on the Storm. Brianna Demmin is top two in scoring and rebounding.

The Eagles are 12-11 on the season, splitting their last six matchups. Kaysha Wilber scored 12 points while Mariah Fish and Ayanna Smith each had 10 points in a 65-58 in their season finale against Shiocton.

Tip off is set for 7 p.m.

Kewaunee boys host Oconto

The Kewaunee Storm is making its case for a conference championship as their march continues Thursday at home against Oconto.

After losing to Peshtigo by two points on January 31st, the Storm thrashed the Bulldogs in their most recent matchup, beating them 63-34. Aside from a 65-39 loss to top-ranked Brillion on November 29th, the Storm's other four losses were by a combined eight points. They are led by Thomas Stangel, averaging more than 16 points per game while Cal Ihlenfeldt is near a double-double a game with 14 ppg/8 rpg.

The Blue Devils are sitting in the middle of the pack of the Packerland with a 7-6 mark (13-7 overall) heading into the twilight of the regular season. Kadin Baxter's 29 points were nearly enough to bring the Blue Devils back from a 16-point halftime deficit in a 71-65 loss to NEW Lutheran.

Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.

Storm boys head to Peshtigo

The Kewaunee Storm looks to build momentum before the start of the boys' basketball tournament with a trip to Peshtigo on Tuesday.

The Storm edged NEW Lutheran 62-59 in their last game on February 6th. Thomas Stangel led the way with 25 points while Cal Ihlenfeldt chipped in nine points in the victory. Seven Storm players scored at least five points. The Storm have won five of their last seven games.

The Algoma boys basketball team had no answers for Kaine Fort in a 54-46 loss to the Peshtigo Bulldogs. In the end, however, it was all about Fort's second-half performance. He scored 14 of his game-high 25 points in the second half to build on a three-point halftime lead. Mason Doberstein added 11 points and Grant Bauman added 10 points in the victory for the Bulldogs.

Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.

Storm girls look to continue Packerland hot streak vs. Peshtigo

The best basketball the Kewaunee girls' team has played this season hopes to continue Tuesday night when they host Peshtigo.

The Storm is 6-13 on the season, but they have won four of their last five Packerland Conference games to help keep their record afloat. That includes a 63-53 win over Oconto on Saturday, a team threatening Sevastopol and Peshtigo at the top of the Packerland Conference table.

The Bulldogs toppled Gibraltar on Saturday 46-38 after building their eight-point advantage in the first half. Brooklyn Phillips led the Bulldogs with 16 points while Akira Smalls added 12 points in the victory.

Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.

Storm boys battle Blazers by the bay

The Kewaunee Storm boys' basketball team take the road show to Green Bay on Monday to battle NEW Lutheran.

This is the Storm's first game in the month of February after losing to Peshtigo 56-54 last Tuesday. Thomas Stangel scored 18 and Payton Kohnle added 12 in the loss that saw no other player score more than nine. The game snapped a three-game losing streak.

The Blazers were able to rally from a halftime deficit to beat Gibraltar last Friday 68-61. The Vikings would take Lynch out of his element in the second half, limiting the first-team All-Packerland performer to just three of his 19 points after the break. Elijah Meerstein was more than willing to pick up the slack to lead the Blazers' comeback, scoring 16 of his team-high 20 points in the second half.

Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m.

Kewaunee girls head north to Oconto

The Kewaunee girls' basketball team visits Oconto for a Saturday matinee in Packerland Conference action.

After an uncharacteristic slow start to the season, the Storm have won four of their last seven games and split their 10 Packerland Conference games. They beat NEW Lutheran 53-41 in their last game to break a two game losing streak.

Addisyn Viestenz did a little bit of every thing to hassle the Gibraltar girls' basketball team as Oconto won in Fish Creek Tuesday night 61-38. The Vikings' defense could control Viestenz for much of the second half, but that allowed other Blue Devils to shine, as Natalie Schlueter and Emilee Banker each scored five points after the break.

The opening tip is set for 1 p.m.

UndermannedKewaunee wrestling loses to Peshtigo

Kewaunee wrestling finishes dual season against Peshtigo

The Kewaunee wrestling team will host its final dual meet of the season on Thursday when they welcome the newly crowned Packerland Conference champion Peshtigo to town.

The Storm was competitive with their small roster, but it ultimately foiled them during the Packerland Conference season, losing all three of their duals including last week's bout with Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol. In their tournament action a few days later,

Kemper Robinson was the top-place winner for the Kewaunee wrestling team on Saturday at the Deerfield Scramble. Robinson took second place at 160 pounds while Matt Wery (145) and Mitchell Boeder (285) took 3rd place. Two others placed in the tournament.

The Bulldogs clinched the conference crown with wins over Oconto, Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol, and Southern Door last week.

Varsity matches begin at 7 p.m. with middle school teams duking it out before then.
