Kewaunee softball game postponed

Kewaunee's softball scheduled for Saturday against Peshtigo has been rescheduled to May 2nd. The Storm will try to begin their season on Monday when they're scheduled to take on Roncalli on their home field. Kewaunee is coming off a 10-7 season in 2018. The year prior saw a lot more success when the Storm finished 17-8 and won a regional championship. In the regional final game, they defeated Brillion 5-2.

Brillion was the answer to Friday's trivia question which asked who Kewaunee softball beat in the 2017 regional final.

High School Sports Trivia Contest Question of the day - 3-29-19

Friday's trivia question is, "Who did Kewaunee softball knock off in their 2017 regional championship game?"

You can find this question in the DoorCountyDailyNews.com E-paper. If you answer correctly through the E-paper, you have an opportunity to win a prize.

The answer will be posted at 7 AM on Saturday.

Update: The previous question asked who Kewaunee baseball knocked off in the 2017 regional final.

Throwers a strength for Kewaunee

Kewaunee Head Coach Joe Kassner is happy with the mix on his team, but especially with his throwers. The Storm expects to graduate a lot of seniors at the end of their season, but Kassner has been impressed early on with the talent in the freshman ranks. One of the strengths of his team he believes is the throwers, which have been confined mostly to shot put during the indoor season. Kassner believes one of his throwers, in particular, could have a big year.

He also highlighted Elliot Van Goethem and Brock Kleiman as two other throwers set for big years for the Storm. They have a chance to showcase their hard work in practice when they compete at UW-Stevens Point Friday afternoon.

Storm go silent in Denmark

What started promising for the Kewaunee Storm Thursday afternoon ended sadly on the baseball diamond as they fell 7-3 to the Denmark Vikings. The Storm scored the first two runs of the contest, but would be outscored 7-1 in the final 6 ½ frames. Daniel Stangel led the way for the Storm, going a perfect 2-2 on the day with an RBI.

Baseball, softball try for games Thursday

Two games have been postponed but three others hope to hit area diamonds today. Kewaunee baseball is slated to take the field this afternoon at four against Denmark. The Storm’s softball team is also scheduled to play host this evening with a game at five against Gibraltar. Southern Door softball is expected to hit the road to Oconto to battle the Blue Devils at 5 p.m. Algoma’s game at NEW Lutheran has been rescheduled to April 9th while Sturgeon Bay will have to wait until April 15th to host Sturgeon Bay.

Kewaunee baseball season starting soon

The weather is getting warmer and baseball season is fast-approaching for Kewaunee. The Storm's first game is scheduled for Tuesday when they host Hilbert/Stockbridge. Kewaunee would like to improve on their record from 2018 as they finished over .500 for the first time since the 2015 season. That was the year Sam Kohnle tied the school record for walks drawn with 26 and broke the school record for stolen bases with 29.

Kohnle was the correct answer to Friday's trivia question which asked who tied the school record for walks and broke the school record for steals.

Kewaunee track gets a couple stellar showings

Kewaunee's girls track and field team headed to Manitowoc on Friday to participate in the Pam Kjono Indoor Meet. The best Storm performance came from Elizabeth Lamack who finished 2nd in the 3200 meter run at 13:13.44. Lamack also participated in the high jump and finished 16th.

Kaaryn Smidel finished 8th in the 800 meter run at 2:54.09. Elena Lewis got a top ten finish in the 1600 meter run at 6:27.99. Lisa Reinke finished 6th in the shot put. The Storm's 4x800 meter relay team finished in 9th place.

Kewaunee adjusting to tighter entry limits

The gyms where many high school indoor track meets are not the only thing tightening up for Kewaunee. The indoor track meets have been more restrictive of how many entries each school can have for certain events. Kewaunee track coach Joe Kassner says it makes it harder to get a look at kids and how they compete unless they are willing to travel.

Kewaunee heads to Wausau West for a meet against the host team, Medford, Tigerton, and Wittenberg-Birnamwood. Field events begin at 4:15 p.m.

Kewaunee Athletic Boosters works with students

The Kewaunee Athletic Boosters and the high school’s technical education department worked together recently to address a glaring need for its soccer teams. Kewaunee’s soccer coaches expressed a need for dugouts for its games, preferably portable so they could move around if needed.  What started as another project for the Kewaunee Athletic Boosters to take on turned into an opportunity for collaboration according to the organization’s president Michelle Dax.

The Kewaunee Athletic Booster Club has also in the past successfully fundraised for new scoreboards, handrails for fan seating areas, and a portable defibrillator.

Kewaunee baseball trying to improve again

The Kewaunee baseball will try to continue the trend of improving on their record for the third straight season. Last season's 10-9 record was an improvement over 2017 and that season was a better year than 2016. The 2019 Storm will try to recapture the magic of the 2015 team that went 17-8 and won the Packerland Conference crown with a 14-2 record in the conference. They reached the regional final as well.

Friday's trivia question was, ""When was the last time the Kewaunee baseball team won a Packerland Conference championship?"

The correct answer was 2015.

Kewaunee's Dax earns all-state honors

Kewaunee’s Sara Dax can officially close the book on her high school career after being named to the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches’ Association All-State team for a second year in a row. The Michigan Tech recruit led the Storm in scoring (21.8 points per game), rebounding (8.8 rebounds per game), and assists (3.5 assists per game) during the 2018-19 campaign. The Storm made it to the sectional semi-final before falling to Kiel to conclude a 23-2 season.

Kewaunee track getting to full strength

The Kewaunee track team expects to be at full strength in time for its first invitational Thursday at UW-Oshkosh. About 28 boys and 25 girls are out for this season’s teams, a blessing for the coaching staff as they try to fill up events. The success of its wrestling and basketball teams stretched into the opening week of the track season, which started earlier this month. Kewaunee head track coach Joe Kassner says those athletes got a little time off to rest.

Kassner says other commitments such as driver education classes will also keep some of its athletes out until later this week. Even though the season has already started, Kassner added there is still time for students to join the team. You can listen to the full indoor track season preview with Kewaunee’s head track coach Joe Kassner online at DoorKewauneeHighSchoolSports.com.

Kewaunee storms to Sheboygan Falls for regional semis

The Kewaunee Storm boys’ basketball team is aiming to keep their season alive with a road matchup at Sheboygan Falls Friday night. The Storm are coming off a big 75-54 win over Two Rivers on Tuesday. Ryan Carmichael leads the Storm in scoring at nearly 16 points a game and assists with nearly four a game. Sheboygan Falls earned the bye to the semis with a 15-7 overall record. They are coming off a sound 84-59 defeat to Xavier last Monday. Jonah Tenpas leads the team in almost all statistical categories, averaging 11 points,  just shy of five rebounds, and over two assists a game. Friday’s game begins at 7 p.m.

Storm sees season's end in Denmark

The Kewaunee Storm girls basketball team’s season came to a close Thursday night in Denmark as it lost 46-35 to Kiel. Its 35 points were the lowest it had scored all season long in the Storm’s first loss since January 7th at Wrightstown. Kiel’s Savannah Walsdorf proved to be a difference maker as she scored 20 points in the win. Kewaunee’s season ends with a record of 23-2 including a perfect mark in the conference.
