Kewaunee girls survive second-round scare

Coming off a bye, the Kewaunee High School girls’ basketball team got a taste of postseason play Friday night. Kewaunee survived against Denmark, 50-46. It was close throughout, the Storm nursed a one-point halftime lead and never could pull away. Denmark plays in the North Eastern Conference, against larger schools. Sharpened by a tougher level of competition, the Vikings were able to give state-ranked Kewaunee everything they could handle.

Kewaunee’s leading scorer was Hailey Gaedtke (15 points), followed closely by Mackenzie Tlachac (14). Denmark’s Jessica Heraly had a game-high 21 points. Kewaunee returns to the court Saturday, another home game against Kewaskum. The Indians wrecked Brillion Friday, 55-28.

Severin opens WIAA State Wrestling Tournament action

The road to another podium finish for Jack Severin begins today in Madison as the Kewaunee senior wrestles his first match at the state tournament.

Severin will face Somerset's Tommy Hantsbarger at 126 pounds in Division 2 when the session begins at 11:15 a.m.

Kewaunee girls prepare for first WIAA Playoff game

The road to Green Bay finally begins for the Kewaunee girls basketball team Friday night when they host Denmark Friday night.

The Storm enters the game 21-1 on the season and on a 16 game winning streak. The Vikings were the first matchup of the season for the Storm, beating them on the road 60-46. Denmark outscored Two Rivers by 15 in the first half in its 56-41 victory on Tuesday to advance to the second round. The winner of the game will advance to Friday's regional final against either Kewaskum or Brillion. A Storm win would ensure one more home game for the Storm. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.

Kewaunee boys ready for conference championship game

The Kewaunee High School boys’ basketball team did what it had to do Monday night against Sevastopol, easily defeating the Pioneers, 79-39. Kewaunee ends the regular season against Southern Door in a rematch of a 44-43 nail biter from earlier in the season. That lone point is the difference in the Packerland standings with Kewaunee in first and the Eagles trailing close behind in second. The game tips at 7:30 PM.

Severin punches ticket to state

Going up from Division 3 to Division 2 did not mean much to Kewaunee's Jack Severin.

Severin won the 126 pound weight class at the Oconto Falls sectional on Saturday, punching his ticket to the state tournament in Madison. He will await his opponent when his route to another state medal begins on Friday.

Kewaunee boys win as showdown takes shape

The Kewaunee High School boys’ basketball team controlled Peshtigo from the start Friday night en route to a 75-47 victory. Kewaunee stretched an 11-point halftime lead to the final commanding margin of victory. The win pushes the Storm to 13-1 in the conference, a game ahead of Southern Door with two games to play. One of those contests just so happens to be against the Eagles. Before Thursday’s potential championship contest, Kewaunee has to make a trip to Sevastopol Monday night. The Pioneers edged Gibraltar Friday in a mild upset.

Kewaunee boys survive scare at Oconto

The Kewaunee High School boys’ basketball team maintained their slim one-game lead in the Packerland standings…barely. The Storm eked past Oconto on the road, 60-57, in a seesaw affair Tuesday. It was the only Packerland varsity contest that was played as scheduled due to the morning’s winter storm. Kewaunee Schools operated on a two-hour delay, and that may have affected the Storm. Earlier in the season, Kewaunee beat Oconto handily, 70-48, as a comparison.

Both teams had three players reach double figures. Ryan Carmichael netted 23 to lead Kewaunee while Oconto was paced by 16 from Josh Woller. Kewaunee is back on the court Friday against Peshtigo.

Kewaunee girls roll past Sevastopol

The Kewaunee High School girls’ basketball team rolled against Sevastopol Monday night, 76-42. Four players reached double figures as the Storm continue to work in more and more rest for key players, gearing up for the postseason beginning next week. That trend started in a comfortable victory at home against Gibraltar on January 31st when Mackenzie Tlachac had just eight points in limited minutes.

Kewaunee is ranked number five in the state at the Division 3 level with a 20-1 record. Their only loss was at (10) Valders. Kewaunee remains perfect in the Packerland Conference with one game left, Thursday at Southern Door.

Kewaunee qualifies trio to sectional wrestling

Denmark provided tough matchup for defending regional champion Kewaunee in Division 2. The Storm had Jack Severin win his weight class along with Mason Jeanquart.  Mitchell Thompson clinched his sectional appearance with a second-place finish.

Kewaunee girls pull away from Peshtigo in the second half

After 18 minutes of play Friday night, the Kewaunee High School girls’ basketball team found themselves leading tenuously in what can only be described as a slugfest. A strong second half allowed the Storm to improve a 15-13 advantage to a 49-25 final score. Mackenzie Tlachac was the only Kewaunee player to crack double figures, finishing with 17 points.

The Storm has two regular-season games remaining against Sevastopol and Southern Door. Kewaunee has already clinched the championship as they hold a five-game edge over Gibraltar and Peshtigo in second place.

Kewaunee boys tattoo NEW Lutheran

The Kewaunee High School boys’ basketball team defeated NEW Lutheran, 81-53, on Thursday night. The win pushes the Storm to 15-3 overall, 11-1 in the Packerland Conference with four games left in the regular season. Kewaunee saw several great performances Thursday including 24 points from Alex Rohr. Ryan Carmichael added 18 with Tanor Bortolini chipping in 14 points.

Kewaunee has retaken sole possession of first place in the conference but there are plenty of potential hurdles between now and the final game. The Storm will face Oconto and Peshtigo who are both in the upper half of the Packerland standings, and they end the season against Southern Door who remains only a game back of Kewaunee.

Kewaunee girls heat up against Blue Devils

The Kewaunee High School girls’ basketball team rolled Tuesday in a complete effort against Oconto, topping the Blue Devils 72-41. Kewaunee yielded only 13 points to Oconto in the opening frame and still outscored the Blue Devils after the break while cycling in reserves. Mackenzie Tlachac had a game-high 23 points with Ashley Pawlitzky’s 17 offering strong support.

Kewaunee remains perfect in the Packerland Conference with three games remaining. Friday they travel to Peshtigo.

Kewaunee boys give Packerland huge postseason boost

The Kewaunee High School boys’ basketball team picked up a huge road win against ranked Shiocton Monday night, 75-70. Coming just weeks before the start of the postseason tournament it is a nice feather in the cap for the conference that should help the seeding of top teams including Sturgeon Bay and Southern Door.

Ryan Carmichael led the Storm with 21 points but it was senior guard Tyler Hensley provided the exclamation points with 5 baskets from behind the arc.

Kewaunee’s remaining games are all conference contests. They host NEW Lutheran on Thursday night.

Area wrestlers prepare for trip back to state

The road to Madison begins with regional tournaments across the state this Saturday for area wrestlers.  Kewaunee’s Jack Severin, Southern Door’s Grant Englebert, and Luxemburg-Casco’s Lucas Joniaux and Reece Worachek are all looking to return to the podium at the Kohl Center. Severin will likely face even stiffer competition than in previous years after Kewaunee was bumped up to Division 2, now sharing the regional with teams like Two Rivers and Luxemburg-Casco. Severin told DoorCountyDailyNews.com last month that he is ready for the challenge.

Luxemburg-Casco, Kewaunee, and Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol will wrestle at Denmark while Southern Door heads to Brillion for their respective regional tournaments. First session begins at 10:30 a.m.

Kewaunee girls rebound from first loss

The Kewaunee High School girls’ basketball team rebounded from their first loss of the season on Thursday night against a familiar opponent. The Storm and Gibraltar met in Kewaunee last week with the return engagement in Fish Creek six days later. Kewaunee bested the Vikings, 74-46. It wasn’t as easy as the score indicates though. The Storm netted 47 points in the second half to pull away.

For Kewaunee, four players reached double figures. Mackenzie Tlachac paced the Storm with 21. Gibraltar had some sterling performances as well, but not as much depth. Abbigael Sitte netted 19 points and Sage Krause had 16 with the remaining players accounting for only 11 points total.

Gibraltar is at Oconto Saturday night while Kewaunee rests until Monday when they host NEW Lutheran.

Kewaunee tops SBS, onto wrestling triple dual

After cementing their place as Packerland Conference champions with a win over Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol, the Kewaunee Storm wrestling team is back in action Friday night.

Wrestling against an undermanned but competitive Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol squard, the Storm won the dual 62-6, The Storm will travel to Oconto Falls for their last matches of the regular season. In addition to facing the host school, the Storm is also expected to face Green Bay Preble and Sheboygan South. The tri-dual is expected to begin at 5:30 p.m.

Kewaunee boys chop down Mishicot

The Kewaunee High School boys’ basketball team took advantage of a nonconference game against winless Mishicot, prevailing easily by an 89-44 margin. The Storm shined in the second half, outscoring the Indians 46-14.

The next game for Kewaunee is also of the nonconference variety but the difficulty level will greatly enhanced. Shiocton is 13-2 overall, 7-1 in the Central Wisconsin Conference. They played a familiar opponent Tuesday, taking out the Packerland’s NEW Lutheran, 89-40. Kewaunee travels to Shiocton Monday.

Kewaunee girls basketball suffer first loss of season

Game number 16 of the 2019-2020 season marks the first defeat for the Kewaunee High School girls’ basketball team. The Storm fell at Valders, 50-43, on Tuesday night. The Vikings are no slouches, possibly the best team Kewaunee has faced all year. They now possess a 15-2 record and remain undefeated at home. For a Storm team that has been a cut above conference competition, it was good preparation for the state tournament that begins later this month.

Kewaunee got off to a slow start scoring just 15 points in the first half. Valders got 19 points from Emma Wagner and 12 from Kendra Hickmann which gave the Vikings just enough offense to hang on in the second half. Kewaunee’s next game is Thursday against Gibraltar.

Kewaunee wrestling prepares for tough stretch run

Wrestling is not an easy sport and Kewaunee knows that better than almost anyone. The Storm clinched their third straight Packerland Conference title last week against Southern Door with a hard-fought 51-24 victory. The team is a two-time defending regional champion, but an enrollment increase bumped them up to Division 2. That places them in the same bracket as another local, multi-year regional champion in Luxemburg-Casco and other tough squads in Denmark, Valders, Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol and Two Rivers. Head coach Dan Steinhorst says the competition level has certainly risen but says his wrestlers are ready for the challenge.

Before they get to next weekend's regional tournament, Kewaunee will wrap up its Packerland Conference slate with a 7 p.m. home meet against Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol.

Great performance from our 10 high schoolers today. Finishing 3rd as a team! Also bringing home two individual 1st places from Jason Reinke and Jack Severin! Way to go!

Kewaunee boys coast Saturday against Gibraltar

The Kewaunee High School boys’ basketball team raced out to a 44-28 halftime lead at Gibraltar Saturday afternoon in Fish Creek before coasting to a 78-63 victory. Ryan Carmichael led the Storm with 28 points. The win puts Kewaunee back into a first place tie in the Packerland Conference with Sturgeon Bay. Both teams are 10-1 in league play.

For Kewaunee, the next two games are non-conference and a rematch with Southern Door (9-2) is the final game of the regular season. Kewaunee and Sturgeon Bay have split their regular season matchups already. There is still a very real possibility that the final standings could have a three-way tie at the top.

The Gibraltar High School girls basketball game entered Friday’s contest playing lights out basketball. They had just smothered Sturgeon Bay, 52-24, to pick up their fourth straight win. The undefeated Kewaunee Storm weren’t fazed and led comfortably for nearly the entire game while giving starters like Mackenzie Tlachac extended rests. Kewaunee had a double digit lead early and was able to answer every Gibraltar attempt at a scoring run.

Claire Kohnle had 15 points for Kewaunee with Katie Metzler adding 14 and Ashley Pawlitzky netting 12. Abbigael Sitte scored a game-high 20 for Gibraltar. Kewaunee tips off against Valders Tuesday in nonconference play. Gibraltar can make a bid for third place in the conference if they defeat NEW Lutheran Tuesday.
