Storm baseball hold off Pioneers rally for victory

A three-run rally was insufficient for Sevastopol to knock off Kewaunee on the baseball diamond Tuesday as the Storm won the game 7-5.

After trading runs in the third inning, the Storm scored two runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to climb to a 7-2 lead. The highlight of that stretch came in the fourth inning when Micah Vanness clubbed a two-run home run. The Pioneers engineered a late rally powered by back-to-back doubles from Logan Schuh and Tyler Grooters, but they would leave the bases loaded without scoring another run to drop the game to the Storm.

Brady Pribek and Vanness led the Storm with two RBIs on one hit, while Schuh's afternoon ended with him leading the Pioneers offensively with two hits and two RBIs. Both teams were plagued by mistakes in the field, combining to commit eight in the game.

Storm softball outlasts Pioneers

The Kewaunee softball team made its early runs stick in a 3-1 win over Sevastopol on Tuesday.

An RBI groundout by Breanna Riha in the first inning and a bases-clearing two-run double by Riha in the third were all the Storm needed. The Pioneers tried to take the game late when Naomi Rikkola stole home, but Addison Schauske was cut down to third to end the late threat.

Vivian Bootz led the Storm with three hits, while Kambreia Last added two hits, and three others had one. Kayla Ranly, Rikkola, Schauske, and Taylor Kochanski contributed hits for the Pioneers.

Storm baseball burn Blazers

The Kewaunee baseball team hung crooked numbers in each of the first five innings to win Monday's game 19-0 over NEW Lutheran.

The game's death knell came in the second inning when the Storm plated eight runs, highlighted by a bases-clearing triple by Brett Paulsen and a run-scoring single from Alec Carlson. The Storm pounded out 14 hits while taking advantage of five Blazers errors. The lone bright spot for the Blazers was a Hayden Schultz single in the fifth inning off of Waylon Delain. Jackson Walecka and Delain combined to allow no runs on one hit while striking out 13 of the 16 batters they faced.

The Storm are back in action on Tuesday when they play Sevastopol at 5 p.m.

Storm track post several wins at Packerland Conference relays

The Kewaunee track teams brought back plenty of gold from Thursday's Packerland Conference Relays meet in Oconto.

The boys posted wins in the 4x200m, 4x400m, and the 4x1600m, while the girls found their success in the 4x400m, 4x800m, SMR 1600m, the DMR 4000m, Anna Barnica (high jump), and Braelyn Chevalier (long jump).

Storm softball suffers tough loss to Wrightstown

A day after beating NEW Lutheran/Providence Academy in a rare Wednesday game 4-1, the Kewaunee softball team was shut out by Wrightstown Thursday evening, 7-0.

The Storm were able to get at least two baserunners in the fifth and sixth, but could not secure the big hit to change the score. Bryn Amundson and Mallory Colwell caused problems for the Storm, combining for five hits and two RBI to lead the Tigers to the win. Ali Repitz took the loss for the Storm, allowing five runs (3 ER) on seven hits in one inning of work. Lexi Hanrahan accounted for two of the Storm's four hits.

On Wednesday, the Storm scored two runs in the fourth and fifth innings while pounding out 10 hits to beat the Blazers. Summer Walechka, Breanna Riha, and Hanrahan each had two hits while Repitz, Hanrahan, London Karnopp, and Chloe Sperber drove in runs. Repitz earned the win from the circle, allowing five hits and one run (0 ER) in a complete game effort.

Storm softball smacks Tigers

The Kewaunee Storm softball team scored at least two runs in four different innings in Tuesday's 9-3 win over Howards Grove.

The Tigers tallied all three of their runs in the first inning with a bases-clearing double. The Storm answered with two runs in the first inning and another two runs in the second inning, with Vivian Bootz's two-run single the game's rally's biggest blow. Tallying a single run in the fourth inning, the Storm scored a pair in the fifth and sixth innings, buoyed by a two-run, inside-the-park home run and an RBI double by Breanna Riha.

Riha's day ended with her collecting three hits and three RBI. Cora Schleis, Bootz, Summer Walechka, and Lexi Hanrahan posted multi-hit games.

Wolves softball demolish Cougars

The odds were in the Algoma softball team's favor on Friday as they put up crooked numbers in the first, third, and fifth innings to beat Coleman 12-0 in five innings.

With two players on and one out, a Nora Krause single, a Natalie Ray double, and a passed ball gave the Wolves an early 4-0 lead. They would nearly double that lead two innings later when Ray hit a two-run homer and Jaydn Nellis followed it up a few batters later with a two-out triple to make it 7-0. The Wolves put the game on ice in the fifth inning thanks to a two-RBI double from Madison Schneider, RBI singles from Brooke Mattson and Sierra Slaby, and a RBI ground out from Macie Zimmerman to make it a 12-0 lead.

Ray ended her day 3-4 with four RBI while Schneider also had a two-RBI day. Five Wolves players recorded multi-hit games. Zimmerman didn't need much for run support, facing only five more than the minimum over five innings, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out eight.

Storm softball ravages Clippers

The Kewaunee Storm softball team only needed three innings to hand Sturgeon Bay a 19-0 loss on Thursday.

The Storm sandwiched a nine-run second inning with a pair of five-run frames with 17 hits. While the Storm strung together singles and free passes to score five runs in the first inning, the second inning was marked by a three-run homer off the bat of Breanna Riha and a triple from Lexi Hanrahan. The third inning's big blow was a bases-clearing double from Ali Repitz.

Riha led the way with six RBI while Repitz drove in five runs and Hanrahan tallied three. Seven Storm players tallied at least two hits, with three hits apiece coming from Bootz and Riha. Repitz allowed nothing across three innings of work while striking out eight.

Storm baseball topples Blue Devils

Brett Paulsen did it at the plate and on the mound for the Kewaunee Storm as they beat Oconto Tuesday night 7-4.

Paulsen's single in the second inning doubled the Storm's advantage in the second inning to 4-0 before a bases-loaded walk to Diesel Bosdeck made it 5-0. The Storm tacked on an extra run thanks to a fielder's choice by Connor Kilgore. After the Blue Devils scored three times in the fourth inning, the two teams settled with the final score by trading runs in the sixth.

Paulsen ended the day going 3-4 with two RBI while earning the win on the mound with five strikeouts. Kilgore also posted two RBI while three others also batted runs in for the Storm.

Storm softball outlasts Raiders

Four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning helped the Kewaunee Storm softball team knock off Two Rivers Monday afternoon 10-9.

The Storm took a 2-0 lead in the second inning thanks to a Raiders error and a double by Ali Repitz. The Raiders would score seven of the game's next nine runs, which included two extra-base hits. An error on a Mariah Schlies cut the lead to one in the fifth before it stretched back out to 9-4 in the top of the sixth. A Breanna Riha double and a hard-hit ball by Baleigh Saxby made it 9-6 before the seventh inning's heroics. Lexi Hanrahan and Vivian Bootz delivered RBI singles to get the game within one run before Repitz came through again with a two-RBI single that ended the game on a happy note for Storm fans.

Repitz stuck with it from the circle, allowing nine runs (8 ER) on seven hits and seven walks across seven innings of work to get the win. She made up for it at the plate, ending her day 4-4 and three RBI. Bootz, Riha, Schlies, and Hanrahan posted multi-hit games for the Storm.

The Storm play again Tuesday evening when they play Oconto at home at 5 p.m.

Storm baseball hold off Gogebic

The Kewaunee Storm baseball team scored two runs in three consecutive innings, leaving Mauston with a 7-5 victory.

Down 1-0 after one inning, productive outs brought in the first runs of the game for the Storm in the second inning. In the third inning, Brett Paulsen's bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch scored the subsequent two runs for the Storm to make it. The Storm lost the lead in the fourth inning when Gogebic logged three singles and took advantage of an error to make it 5-4. More productive outs helped the Storm retake the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Another wild pitch would bring home the Storm's final run of the afternoon.

Connor Kilgore, Ethan Paplham, and Brady Pribek all had two hits in the game for the Storm while Diesel Bosdeck, Paulsen, Wyatt Delain, and Alec Carlson registered RBI. Pribek and Bosdeck combined to strike out 10 batters in the game.

Storm softball lose to Valders on the road

The Kewaunee softball team gave up crooked numbers in four of the six innings played in an 11-2 loss to Valders on Friday.

The Storm was down 9-0 when they finally scratched across two runs in the top of sixth inning. Breanna Riha drove in the first run with a single before an error allowed her to score the other run. Riha and Kambreia Last collected the lone hits of the game for the Storm, who committed five errors on defense. The Vikings had three players with multi-hit games and three more with at least two RBI.

Storm baseball splits Mauston matchups

Friday was a mixed bag for the Kewaunee Storm baseball team. They beat Gladstone 7-4 while losing to Escanba 8-3.

In their win over Gladstone, a six-run fifth inning proved to be the difference for the Storm. Ethan Paplham's bases-clearing triple and two-RBI double from Micah Vanness proved to be the most significant blows dealt by the Storm. Connor Kilgore went 3-4 with an RBI, while four others recorded at least one hit. Will Delain nearly went the distance, striking out nine batters while allowing four runs (0 ER) on four hits.

The Storm suffered a big run inning in their loss to Escanaba. They allowed seven runs on two errors and two walks, leaving the de facto home team without an advantage. The Storm took a 3-1 lead in the third inning on a pair of errors. Paplham, Kilgore, Delain, and Carlson all had hits in the loss.

Storm take third at Rosholt Invitational

On Thursday, the KHS Girls Track & Field team traveled to Stevens Point to participate in the Rosholt Invitational. They finished third in a meet where 24 teams scored points. Hannah Miller placed in all four of her events. She won the 800 and was 2nd in the 400 and Triple Jump. She was also a part of the 4x400 relay team with Lily Hudson, Alison Szydel, and Natalie Miller, who placed 4th. Kaylyn Martin continued her impressive run in the distances with a 6th place finish in the 1600m and a 7th place finish in the 3200m. The 4x200m relay team of Lily Hudson, Natalie Miller, Alison Szydel, and Braelyn Witcpalek finished 4th. Many other team members were able to see a lot of great competition and improve their times and distances. This wraps up the indoor competition portion of our season. Hopefully, next week, we will see some more favorable spring weather as we head outdoors for meets in Sevastopol and Marinette!
