Area runners and teams braved cool fall conditions at the Division 3 Sectional meet held in Manitowoc, with state berths on the line.
On the boys’ side, Lourdes Academy edged out Valders by just four points to capture the sectional team title, finishing with 113 points. Iola-Scandinavia (129) and Weyauwega-Fremont (133) rounded out the top four, while Mishicot finished fifth with 140.
Individually, Roncalli’s Elliott Onesti won the sectional race with a time of 16:12.8, followed by Iola-Scandinavia’s Ben Beck (16:38.3) and Weyauwega-Fremont’s Marcus Benjamin (16:51.2). Rounding out the top five were Lourdes Academy’s Henry Spanbauer (16:56.3) and Omro’s Lucas Kasuboski (17:27.9).
Southern Door led local boys’ teams with a strong showing, finishing just outside the top ten behind solid performances from its young core. Algoma, Gibraltar, and Sevastopol also competed, rounding out a deep local representation in the sectional field.
In the girls’ race, Kewaunee captured the sectional title with 74 points, holding off Valders (93) and Southern Door (118). Lourdes Academy (126) and Mishicot (148) rounded out the top five.
Kewaunee’s Hannah Miller claimed the individual championship, crossing the line in 18:59.7, nearly 40 seconds ahead of the next finisher. She was followed by Mishicot’s Juliana Doerner (19:35.7), Brillion’s Alana Kempen (19:37.9), Valley Christian’s Mya Moran (19:38.2), and Valders’ Alyssa Wagner (19:48.5).
Southern Door’s girls had one of their best team showings of the season, placing third.
Sevastopol’s Breiah Newton also qualified individually with a top-10 finish, and Algoma’s and Gibraltar’s runners rounded out the local field with steady performances in the cool fall conditions.
The state qualifiers from the meet will now advance to the WIAA Division 3 State Championships, held Saturday, November 1, at the Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.
