Kewaunee softball battled through a roller-coaster Saturday, dropping a tough opener before responding with a dramatic walk-off win to split with Oconto.
In Game 1, the Storm looked in control early, building a 6-1 lead behind a flurry of hits, but couldn’t hold off a late surge in a 9-8 loss. Kewaunee out-hit Oconto 13-10, with Braelyn Chevalier and Vivian Bootz each collecting three hits, but an eight-run sixth inning flipped the game. Despite the setback, the Storm showed consistent production throughout the lineup and played clean defensively without an error.
Game 2 turned into an all-out shootout, and another late-game swing saw Oconto take a 16-15 lead in the eighth. But the Storm answered. Kambriea Last and Breanna Riha came through in the bottom half as a fielder’s choice from Riha scored Last, pushing across the winning run in a 17-16 walk-off victory.
Chevalier stayed hot at the plate with three more hits and four RBIs, while Last and Bootz each piled up four-hit performances in a 19-hit offensive explosion.
Improving to 7-2 on the season, Kewaunee will get a test at home Monday against Luxemburg-Casco with a 4:30 p.m. first pitch.
