Gibraltar takes second at Oneida Nations Regional

Several area golf teams competed in the WIAA Division 3 Oneida Nation regional this week at Thornberry Creek at Oneida-Hobart with the top four teams advancing to sectionals.

Mishicot won the regional with a team score of 337, followed by Gibraltar at 358, Reedsville at 360, and Roncalli at 366 to round out the qualifying teams. Sevastopol finished fifth with 372, just missing the cut. Kewaunee shot 384 and Southern Door finished with 447.

Individually, Evan MacCaux of Kewaunee punched his ticket to sectionals with an 82, qualifying as an individual despite the team falling short. Chase Kanapka of Sevastopol also advanced individually with a 91, giving the Pioneers a representative at the next level even though the team didn't qualify as a group.

Henry Wehrenberg led Gibraltar with an 85 and Bairen Lhost added an 88. Chase Kanapka's 91 paced Sevastopol. Marshall Gray shot an 88 to lead Southern Door.

Late rallies washes away Vikings from tournament on 105.1 The GOAT

A mid-game rainstorm helped the offense blossom for Marion in the final two innings as they came from behind to knock Gibraltar/Washington Island out of the WIAA Tournament 20-13.

Trailing 1-0 in the first inning, the Vikings scored three times in their half of the frame, taking advantage of Heidi Krueger's early command, a base hit from Gabi Solomon, an error, and a fly out to take a 3-1 lead.

The Vikings stretched their lead to 9-1 in the second inning, scoring four times on free passes, a passed ball and a RBI single from Celeste Ashley. A mid-game rain hassled both pitchers in the middle innings, but the Vikings still had an 11-4 lead entering the sixth inning when disaster struck.

The Vikings gave up seven runs in the sixth inning and nine runs in the seventh innings with the Mustangs' Bailee Miller, Neveah Ewald, and Julia James delivering the biggest blows. Isla Fagundes and Gallant drove in runs late, but it was not enough to flip the game back into the Vikings' favor.

Solomon led the team in the season finale, going 2-5 with an RBI. Gallant, Mia Glocke, and Ashley also had hits while Ashlyn Lautenbach, Ashley, Fagundes (2), Gallant (2), Emilie Glocke registered RBI. Glocke took the loss in the circle, allowing 18 runs (10 ER) on 10 hits while striking out 10 across 6.2 innings with her sister Mia giving her arm a brief break in the sixth inning. The Vikings' season ends with a record of 5-20.

VIkings softball host start of tournament play vs. Marion on 105.1 The GOAT

The Gibraltar/Washington Island softball team hosts its first home tournament game in a decade on Tuesday when it welcomes to Marion in the WIAA Regional Semifinal.

The Vikings concluded its regular season with a 7-6 loss to Reedsville. Emilie Glocke was dominant in the circle, striking out 12 over five and two-thirds innings, but eight walks and six Reedsville stolen bases created too much damage. The Panthers put up five in the fourth to build a 7-1 lead and Gibraltar couldn't quite complete the comeback, scoring five late runs on a walk, a fielder's choice, a ground out, and a single before the rally fell short. Gabi Solomon, Glocke, Cleleste Ashley, and Mia Glocke each had a hit and drove in a run. The Vikings have won five games in the month of May, giving softball manager Brandon Schmidt a strong dose of optimism heading into Tuesday's game.

The Mustangs finished their season with a strong 8-5-1 mark, including a four-game winning streak that saw them average 17 runs per game.

Vikings baseball hits road to face Bears

The Gibraltar/Washington Island baseball team continues its non-conference road trip on Tuesday with a game at Bonduel.

Adorjan Szakala delivered his most important innings to date in a Gibraltar/Washington Island uniform on Friday night as he closed the door on a nailbiting 8-7 victory over Mishicot. Cam Munao, Hobbs Emerson, and Miles Richmond went 2-4 while Wyatt Bultman went 3-5 to lead the Vikings in hits in the game. Szakala picked up the win with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing no hits and striking out one. Munao started the game, pitching five strong innings as he allowed three runs (3 ER) on three hits while striking out five innings.

The Bears are 17-5 on the season and have rebounded from their 11-6 loss to Kewaunee with wins over Manawa (10-5) and Amherst (4-3).

First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.

Szakala wins the day for the Vikings on 105.1 The GOAT

Adorjan Szakala delivered his most important innings to date in a Gibraltar/Washington Island uniform on Friday night as he closed the door on a nailbiting 8-7 victory over Mishicot.

Early on, it looked like there would be no drama with the Vikings scoring multiple runs in each of the first three innings to build up a 7-0 lead. The Vikings scored their first three runs in the opening inning courtesy of RBI hits from Aaron Brey and Luke Rericha and a passed ball. A wild pitch and a passed ball helped the Vikings score two runs in the second inning and an error helped them score two more in the third inning.

The Indians refused to go away as they scored the next seven runs to tie the game in the sixth inning, highlighted by two RBI hits from Quintyn Sand and one from Jax Vogel. After the Indians tied the game and still had the bases loaded, Szakala entered the game and struck out Brogan Wasurick to end the threat. The Vikings threatened to score in the seventh in, but Logan Rank performed his own Houdini act to get out of a bases loaded jame. Szakala executed a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extra innings. In the top of the eighth inning, Brey's lead-off walk led to the final run when Hobbs Emerson beat out swinging bunt to allow the birthday boy to score.  Szakala finished the job in the eighth inning, inducing a pair of groundouts before forcing a pop out to end the game,

Munao, Emerson, and Miles Richmond went 2-4 while Wyatt Bultman went 3-5 to lead the Vikings in hits in the game. Szakala picked up the win with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing no hits and striking out one. Munao started the game, pitching five strong innings as he allowed three runs (3 ER) on three hits while striking out five innings.

The Vikings will not play again until the open the WIAA Tournament at home on June 2nd against either Prentice or Three Lakes/Phelps at 4:30 p.m. Tim Kowols will have the call on 105.1 The GOAT beginning at 4:15 p.m.

Vikings baseball clip Wildcats, battle Indians on 105.1 The GOAT Friday

Gibraltar/Washington will go for two wins in two days on Friday when they battle Mishicot on Friday after they beat Lena 12-10 on Thursday.

A RBI double from Owen Dannhausen did not stand for long as the Wildcats took advantage of some Vikings mistakes in the second inning to make it a 3-1 deficit through three innings. The Vikings' fortunes turned in the from there as they scored at least two runs in each of the final four innings, including a critical five run  fourth inning. The Wildcats responded with a five-run sixth inning before the Vikings' Charlie Reinhardt drew a bases-loaded walk and Miles Richmond recorded an RBI single to put the team up for good. Richmond and Cam Munao each had three hits while Aaron Brey and Luke Rericha recorded two RBI. Miles Richmond collected the win as the Vikings used four pitchers on the day.

On Friday, the Vikings head south to battle Mishicot in non-conference baseball action. The Indians are 7-13 on the season and are trying to break a five-game skid. There were swept in their weekday series against Reedsville, losing 14-2 on Tuesday and 5-4 on Thursday. Owen Cisler led the Indians offensively, going 2-3 with an RBI.

Tim Kowols will have the game on 105.1 The GOAT beginning at 3:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the first pitch at 4 p.m.

Vikings baseball on the road against Wildcats

The Gibraltar/Washington Island baseball team is gearing up for this Thursday, as they are traveling to Lena to face the Wildcats.

The Vikings are on a hot streak, having won their past seven games. Most recently, picking up a pair of victories against Sevastopol in their doubleheader this past Tuesday. In the first game, Aaron Brey tossed all seven innings and punched out 11 while allowing just two hits and no runs. Brey also had two RBI, paving the way for the Vikings to a 2-0 win.

In the second match-up, Gibraltar jumped on Sevastopol early and rolled to a 10-2 win behind Hobbs Emerson, who went five and a third innings and struck out six. Miles Richmond closed it out with nearly two hitless innings of relief. Cam Munao and Mason Isaacson each went 2-for-2 at the plate, and Brey, Wyatt Bultman, and Owen Dannhausen each drove in two runs. Gibraltar drew eight walks and didn't commit an error all game.

The first pitch is at 4:30 p.m.

Vikings can't erase early six-run deficit

Gibraltar's softball team dropped a tough one Tuesday at Fish Creek, falling 7-6 to Reedsville despite out-hitting them four to two.

Gabi Solomon, Glocke, Cleleste Ashley, and Mia Glocke each had a hit and drove in a run for Gibraltar, but it wasn't enough on the day.

Gibraltar baseball keeps momentum building with seventh straight

The Gibraltar Vikings took care of business Tuesday, sweeping Sevastopol in a doubleheader and holding the Pioneers to just four combined runs on the day. Gibraltar improves to 16-6 and extends their winning streak to seven games while Sevastopol drops to 8-10.

Game one was a pitchers' duel. Aaron Brey was flat out dealing, tossing all seven innings and striking out 11 while allowing just two hits and no runs. Sevastopol actually out-hit Gibraltar five to two and Andrew Wiesner punched out 11 of his own, but Brey was the difference. Gibraltar's four stolen bases and Brey's two RBIs on two hits were enough to pull out the 2-0 win.

Game two wasn't as close. Gibraltar jumped on Sevastopol early and rolled to a 10-2 win behind Hobbs Emerson, who went five and a third innings and struck out six.

Connor Mueller had two of Sevastopol's three hits in game two, and the Pioneers drew seven walks but couldn't capitalize when it counted.

Vikings softball welcomes Reedsville

After earning one of their first home tournament games in school history, the Gibraltar/Washington Island softball team will take the field on Tuesday to battle Reedsville.

The Vikings have won all five of their games during the month, including a pair of lopsided wins (18-3, 11-5) against NEW Lutheran last week. Game one was over in a hurry. The Vikings sent 13 batters to the plate in the third inning alone, putting up 11 runs to blow it open. Gabi Solomon's inside the park home run was the big blow, and Addison Richmond chipped in a two-run single during the surge. Both finished with three RBIs. Megan Gallant went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, and Emilie Glocke handled business in the circle with six strikeouts over three innings. Glocke came back for game two and tossed all seven innings in an 11-5 win. Olivia Pelkey was dialed in, going 4-for-4 with a double to pace the offense. Solomon stayed hot with two more hits, and Glocke added two hits and two RBIs of her own from the circle. Cleleste Ashley kept the pressure on with two stolen bases.

The Panthers are 3-15 this season and trying to break a five-game skid.

First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.

Vikings baseball host Pioneers for doubleheader

The Gibraltar/Washington Island baseball team will try to build on the momentum they started last week with a twin bill against county rival Sevastopol.

Since being swept by Kewaunee in a doubleheader, the Vikings have won six of their last seven games including a pair of games on Saturday. Aaron Brey set the tone in game one, striking out 11 over five hitless innings before Cam Munao closed it out with three more strikeouts in relief. Munao went 2-for-4 at the plate and swiped four of the team's 10 stolen bases. Wyatt Bultman led the offense with two hits and three RBIs, and Gibraltar drew nine walks in the 8-0 win. Game two was over early. The Vikings put up six in the first inning and never looked back in a 10-0 win over Bowler. Munao stayed hot, going 3-for-4 with a double, and Hobbs Emerson earned the win by tossing three scoreless innings with five strikeouts. Six different players drove in a run as Gibraltar spread the wealth with 11 hits and seven stolen bases on the day.

The Pioneers split a pair of games last Saturday against Sturgeon Bay to take a shine off of the Clippers' senior day festivities. In game one, Sevastopol rallied to take a 10-9 lead with a massive seven-run sixth inning, highlighted by a three-RBI double from Logan Schuh. Bo Tanck went 3-for-5 to lead the offense and Andrew Wiesner added two hits. But Sturgeon Bay answered in the bottom of the seventh when an error scored the winning run, walking off the Pioneers 11-10. Game two was a different story entirely. Chase Haberli tripled home three in the first and never looked back, tossing five hitless innings and striking out seven to earn the win. Schuh, Haberli, Tanck, and Reid LeClair each had two hits as Sevastopol rolled up 12 and cruised to a 13-0 win.

First pitch is set for 4 p.m.

Gibraltar cruises to two shutouts at Saturday's baseball Invitational

With temperatures finally climbing into the 80s after a rough stretch of weather, the Gibraltar Vikings made the most of a nice day at the baseball diamond, blanking Three Lakes and Bowler to move to 14-6 on the season.

Vikings baseball taking on Gillett quad

The Gibraltar/Washington Island baseball team is heading to Gillett this Saturday for a quad; the Vikings will be met by Bowler and Three Lakes.

The Vikings are riding a hot streak, having won their past three games, including a pair of wins over Green Bay NEW Lutheran in a double header and a 5-4 victory over Oconto Falls.

The first pitch is at 9:00 a.m.

Vikings' Martin, Brey sign NLI

Two more Gibraltar athletes will move onto the next level to play their respective sports after the track team's Josie Martin and the baseball team's Aaron Brey signed their National Letters of Intent earlier this week.

Martin will continue her track and field career at UW-Eau Claire, following in the footsteps of McKailey Reisen who joined the squad in past years. She set a personal best in the shotput of 31"10' to grab the school record. She has posted events four times (one shot, three discus) this season.

Brey has been a mainstay on the All-Packerland Conference squads since his freshman year, primarily as a pitcher. He signed on to throw at Carroll University next year. In his last outing, he threw six innings of shutout ball, allowing one hit while striking out ten in an 11-0 victory over NEW Lutheran.

You can see more pictures from their signing day ceremony on the Gibraltar Area Schools Facebook page.

Vikings baseball outlast Panthers in extra innings walk-off

Gibraltar/Washington Island avenged an earlier season loss to Oconto Falls on the baseball diamond on Thursday with a 5-4 walk-off extra inning win in Fish Creek.

The Vikings once again had to battle back from behind as the Panthers flipped a 1-0 advantage for the Vikings from the first inning into a 4-1 lead in the sixth inning. Cam Munao cut the lead in half in the Vikings' half of the sixth inning when he was hit by a pitch before Wyatt Bultman's clutch two-out, two-run triple in the seventh extended the game. The Vikings finally prospered in the 11th inning when Charlie Reinhardt singled in Owen Dannhausen to extend the team's winning streak to three.

Luke Rericha, Bultman, and Reinhardt all had two and were responsible for four of the team's five RBI. Munao, Aaron Brey, Dannhausen, Hobbs Emerson, Miles Richmond, and Mason Isaacson-Krueger also recorded hits as they outhit the Panthers 12-6. The Clippers tied the game in the top of the seventh only to get walked off in the back end. Jack Higginbotham, Drew Propsom, and Rylan Ruenger all had two hits with Propsom driving in a pair.
