Gorham's milestone shines through Vikings' loss on 105.1 The GOAT

The Gibraltar girls basketball team was able to look to its senior star as a bright spot in its 68-36 season-ending loss to Niagara in the first round of the WIAA Division 5 Girls Basketball Tournament on Tuesday.

The Vikings struggled to find an offensive groove for much of the game, battling foul trouble and a swarming Badgers defense that forced several turnovers on both sides of the court. The Badgers held the Vikings scoreless for the game's first four minutes, allowing Mallory Sanicki and Alivia Kleikamp to show off their offensive prowess. Anna Jarosh got the Vikings onto the scoreboard and sparked a mini-rally before another offensive drought later in the half placed them into a hole they would never recover from. Mikala Gorham would end the half strong for the Vikings, but the team entered the locker room down 35-18.

The Badgers started to stretch their lead even more early in the second half thanks to stingy defense and offensive rebounding, which allowed them multiple opportunities to put up points. Gorham would finally get her breakthrough later in the frame to put herself in Gibraltar lore by scoring her 1000th point on an And-One opportunity.

The play gave the Vikings some extra life later in the half, but the Sanicki sisters combined to hit five three-pointers in the frame, not allowing the Badgers to be put away by the Vikings for a second year in a row. Mallory Sanicki led all scorers with 19 points for the Badgers, with Kleikamp adding 13 points and two other players contributing nine. Gorham's career ends with 1,002 points to her name, scoring 13 points in the season finale. Fellow senior Anna Jarosh scored eight points, and Celeste Jauregui chipped in with six points.

The Vikings end the year with a 4-20 mark, including 1-15 in the Packerland Conference.

Vikings girls look to extend season at Niagara on 105.1 The GOAT

For a third straight year, extending the season will down to a night in Niagara as the Gibraltar Vikings girls basketball team hit the road to face the Badgers.

It's a tale of two streaks for the Vikings and the Badgers. The Vikings enter the game on a three-game losing streak and a stretch where they have dropped 10 of their last 12 games. The team has played teams closer the second time around this season, but have not been able to experience the fruits of that labor. One of the bright spots this season has been Mikala Gorham, who leads the team with 13.9 points per game and is tied with Anna Jarosh for the lead in rebounds with 5.3 rpg. Gorham enters the game 11 points short of 1,000 points for her career.

The Badgers are winners of their last seven games, six of which have been by double figures. Mallory Sanicky leads the team with over 13 ppg, but teammates Alivia Kleikamp and Bristol Sanicky are right there at 9.2 ppg.

The last two seasons have come down to these two teams as an opening round matchup. Last year, Andie Schar scored 15 points and Gorham added 10 points in a 45-43 win for the Vikings. The previous year, it was Josie Rock's 17 points that sprung the Badgers past the Vikings 48-32 as they outscored Gibraltar by 14 points in the second half.

Vikings boys battles Wolves on Senior Night on 105.1 The GOAT

With their postseason fate sealed, Gibraltar and Algoma will try to finish the Packerland Conference slate strong when the two teams meet on Monday.

The Vikings fell to Sturgeon Bay 66-40 in their last game. They played the Clippers tight early on as they held them scoreless for the first seven minutes of the game. The Vikings did what they could to keep pace with Aaron Brey, Liam Lindenberg, and Luke Rericha hitting shots from behind the arc, but ultimately missed too many shots underneath to keep up with the Clippers.  The Vikings were led by Kayin Jackson's 11 points, with Jeffrey Mize adding six, while Brey and Lindenberg each added five.

The Wolves have been idle since they beat Sturgeon Bay last week 61-60. The Wolves missed three free throws at the end of the game, but the Clippers could not get the final shot to fall as Algoma prevailed. Cody Kirchman led the way for the Wolves with 19 points and Jackson Starr paced the Clippers with 19 points as well.

Vikings girls head to tournament on down note vs. Tigers

A new season begins on Tuesday for the Gibraltar girls basketball team after they lost to Gillett 54-27 on Thursday.

The Vikings found themselves down 35-13 heading into the locker room after suffering two scoreless droughts of at least four minutes, while the Tigers could rack up points. The two sides had more of a seesaw battle in the second half with the Vikings' Mikala Gorham and the Tigers' Hope Soper dueling. Gorham led the Vikings with 15 points while Abby Jarosh and Celeste Jauregui each chipped in three points. Audrey Pate led all scorers with 22 points, scoring 16 of those points in the first half for the Tigers. Soper added 12 points and Lily Hausen chipped in seven points.

The Vikings will be back in action on Tuesday when they open the WIAA Division 5 Tournament in Niagara. Tim Kowols will have the call on 105.1 The GOAT beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the tip-off at 7 p.m.

Vikings, Clippers look for bounce back on 105.1 The GOAT

Gibraltar and Sturgeon Bay will try to wash the taste out of their mouth from losses earlier this week when they face each  other in Fish Creek on Friday night.

The Vikings were victimized by Caden Pierre's hot first half and Drew Daoust's even stronger second half, as the Eagles rolled to a 74-38 victory. Kayin Jackson ended his day with a team-high 13 points while Jeffrey Mize chipped in 10 points. The loss leaves the Vikings chasing their first conference win since beating Sevastopol 53-48 on January 3rd.

The Clippers were edged by Algoma 61-60 in their last outing. The Wolves missed three free throws at the end of the game, but the Clippers could not get the final shot to fall as Algoma prevailed. Jackson Starr paced the Clippers with 19 points. It was Starr's 24 points that led the Clippers past the Vikings in their first meeting last month 58-43.

Gibraltar welcomes Sturgeon Bay on 105.1 The GOAT

The Gibraltar Vikings look to extend their winning streak to three when they host Sturgeon Bay on Thursday night.

The Vikings are in the midst of their first multi-game winning streak of the season after they dispatched Stockbridge earlier in the week 57-17. Mikayla Gorham scored 22 of her game-high 25 points in the first half for the Vikings as they took a 40-10 lead into the break. Anna Jarosh added 14 more in the win.

The Clippers are trying to break a seven-game losing streak when they head to Fish Creek. In their game earlier this week against Peshtigo, the Clippers rallied in the second half to take a four-point lead at one point. However, costly turnovers and empty possessions weighed heavily as the Bulldogs stepped up, and some hit big shots as they lost 57-51.

The Clippers have the upper hand on the Vikings in the season series, winning their previous matchup in Sturgeon Bay 54-41. Dasha Yeltysheva was one of three Clippers in double figures with 23 points as they outscored the Vikings 25-15 in the second half. Megan Schar scored 15 points in the loss for the Vikings.

Following last Friday's game at Oconto, head coach Travis Ward discussed the challenge ahead playing another one of the stars in the Packerland Conference.

Gibraltar's Tepe follows love of hockey to Green Bay

For Gibraltar student Jameson Tepe, his love for hockey is a long-distance relationship.

Tepe is a member of the Green Bay United Gryphons, aU18 WAHA hockey team serving northeast Wisconsin. The team is made up primarily of players like Tepe who want to play hockey but their respective schools don't have a team of their own. With no rinks in Door or Kewaunee counties, Tepe travels to Green Bay three days a week to get his practices in and some weekends even further away for games. Following in his cousin's footsteps is no easy feat considering the travel, but it is one he is willing to make.

After playing a weekend of games in Iron Mountain, Tepe and the Gryphons will play at home against Kenosha on March 1st and at home against Verona on March 9th.

Vikings girls outlast snow, Eagles in Saturday showdown

Saturday was worth the fight in the snow for the Gibraltar girls basketball team as they beat Southern Door 52-47 in Brussels.

Gibraltar's Mikala Gorham's eight points and Southern Door's Ashlyn Delfosse's 14 points ensured that the Vikings and the Eagles entered the locker room tied at 25 points a piece. The difference would be Gorham in the second half as she erupted for 14 more points to end the afternoon with 22 points for the Vikings. Her teammates Megan Schar and Anna Jarosh would also reach double figures with 15 and 10 points, respectively, to help the Vikings end their seven-game losing streak. Delfosse's day would end with 22 points, while Kaleigh Clafin chipped in 11 points in the loss.

With its game against Stockbridge in between, the Vikings will go for a second straight Packerland Conference win on Thursday when they play Sturgeon Bay. Tim Kowols will have the call on 105.1 The GOAT beginning at 6:15 p.m. followed by the tip at 6:30 p.m.

Gibraltar girls can't put out Blazers, face Eagles Saturday

The Gibraltar girls basketball team had no answer for NEW Lutheran's Ingrid Beaumont and Lexi Meerstein in a 67-36 loss Friday night.

The Blazers duo made a combined 18 shots from the field as Beaumont registered 22 points and Meerstein added 21 points in the win. The Blazers never looked back after they took a 35-18 lead into the break.

The Vikings were led by Megan Schar's 22 points on the night, 12 of which came from behind the arc. Mikala Gorham contributed nine points in the Vikings' loss.

Vikings boys fall on the road to Blue Devils on 105.1 the GOAT

A slow start to the second half doomed the Gibraltar Vikings boys basketball team on Friday night as they lost to Oconto 58-45.

Kayin Jackson led the attack early for the Vikings, scoring the team's first seven points while they weathered the storm brought upon them by Cooper Campshure and Trenton Hartman, who combined for 22 of the Blue Devils' 33 first half points. The Blue Devils would stretch their lead into double figures, but hot shooting from behind the arc from Braden Kita helped narrow the deficit to 33-29 at the break.

The Blue Devils flustered the Vikings' offense in the second half with their zone defense, forcing Gibraltar to make longer, higher passes while creating several turnovers. Midway through the second half, the Vikings were outscored 16-4 before Liam Lindenberg and Jeffrey Mize could find their way to rack. The Vikings would never get their deficit in single digits as their month-long losing streak continued on the road.

Jackson led all scorers with 19 points, and Braden Kita kicked in another 12 points from behind the arc to pace the Vikings. Head coach Travis Ward was proud of his team's effort on Blue Devils star guard Carter Koch, who scored just six points thanks to a combination of tough defense applied by Aaron Brey and others and foul trouble. Campshure and Hartman more than made up for Koch's slow night with 18 and 16 points, respectively.

The Vikings are back on the road on Monday when they face Gillett. NEW Radio Sports Network will carry the Vikings' game on Tuesday when they host Peshtigo. Tim Kowols will have the call on 105.1. The GOAT will begin at 6:45 p.m., with the pregame show followed by the opening tip at 7 p.m.

Vikings boys look to smite the Blue Devils on 105.1 the GOAT

The Gibraltar Vikings boys basketball will drive around the bay to Oconto in hopes of breaking its losing skid against the Blue Devils.

The Vikings have lost their last four games and nine of their last 10 matchups with a 49-45 victory over Florence the lone outlier. Marco Jauregui added seven points and Kayin Jackson contributed six points in the loss.

The Blue Devils are 12-5 overall, splitting their 10 games in the Packerland Conference. They are riding a two game winning streak with victories over Menominee Indian (80-66) and Wautoma (68-55). Vikings girls play host to Pioneers on 105.1 The GOAT

The Gibraltar Vikings girls basketball team will get a second crack at Sevastopol on Tuesday night in Fish Creek.

In their first matchup on December 17th, the Pioneers took a 15-0 lead and never looked back, beating Gibraltar 78-28. The Pioneers were led by Kayla Ranly's 16 points, with Naomi Rikkola chipping in 15 points and Ella Volkmann adding 12 points. In the weeks since the Pioneers have nine of their 10 games, with a loss against Kewaunee, their lone blemish. Rikkola and Ranly control the strings offensively, averaging 17.7 and 16.9 points, respectively. Meanwhile, the Vikings posted only one win during that stretch, coming against Goodman/Pembine on January 9th. Still adjusting to losing Andie Schar for the season with a knee injury, Goham and Schar pace the Vikings with 13.3 and 7.6 ppg, respectively.

Vikings boys can't catch Raiders

Two Rivers' zone defense gave the Gibraltar boys basketball team fits in a 65-41 loss in Fish Creek on Monday.

The Vikings found themselves down 39-20 at the break after they were able to beat the Raiders' press but could not get around the quick and aggressive defenders playing in their zone defense. Braden Kita scored seven of his team-high 17 points in the first half, ending his evening with three three-pointers. Marco Jauregui added seven points and Kayin Jackson contributed six points in the loss. Carson Kadow led the Raiders with 25 points while Alex Johnson and Christian Pyles each added nine points.

Viking boys burned by Blazers

Missing their leading scorer, Kayin Jackson, proved to be too much for the Gibraltar boys basketball team to overcome as they lost their Saturday matinee to NEW Lutheran 47-33.

The Vikings trailed the Blazers 26-10 at the break as they tried to navigate the Blazers' press defense set up by their coach Mark Meerstein. Liam Lindenberg hit three three-pointers after the break to try to get the Vikings into the game, but it would not be enough.

Lindenberg led the Vikings in Jackson's absence with 11 points. Wyatt Bultman, Marco Jauregui, Braden Kita, and Aaron Brey each added four points in the loss. Isaiah Faulknergy led the Blazers with 14 points with Reid Nelson and Grayson Herlache also reaching double figures.
