Vikings boys face Rebels in regular season finale

The Gibraltar boys basketball team will bid adieu to the regular season on Saturday when they play a matinee against Wabeno-Laona.

The Vikings enter the matchup trying to snap a four-game losing streak heading to the matchup, a stretch that has included its two contests with top-ranked Kewaunee. In their 81-40 loss to Kewaunee on Thursday, Kayin Jackson was the lone Viking to reach double figures with 12 points while Aaron Brey and Charlie Reinhardt each chipped in eight points. Saturday's game is likely the last at home for seniors Jackson, Brey, Mauricio Fernandez, Owen Dannhausen, Marco and Fernando Jauregui, and Leo Canudas Castro.

The Rebels are 18-5 on the season and winners of three of their last five. Canton Chrisman (18.6 ppg), Cooper Albrecht (16.2 ppg), and Walker Winkelman (13.5 ppg) all score in double-figures for the Rebels with Albrecht also among the team leaders in rebounds (6.4 rpg) and assists (3.6 apg).

Saturday's tip is set for 1 p.m.

Lourdes Academy had four players reach double figures against an injury-riddled Gibraltar squad on Monday as they cruised to an 88-19 win in Oshkosh.

The Vikings had an early lead in the contest thanks to a pair of three-pointers from Emilie Glocke and a basket underneath from Josie Martin. With the Vikings leading 8-3, the Knights went on a 30-0 run over the next six minutes with Aubrey Schettle proving to be lethal from beyond the arc and the Liabwill sister doing their job underneath. The Vikings mustered just four points the rest of the way as they entered the locker room trailing 52-12 at the break.

The Vikings could turn the tide in their favor in the second half as the Knights scored 25 of the first 28 points in the half, with Kylie Rietz leading the attack. Martin and Gabriella Solomon registered the lone shots made from the field as the Knights tightened their defense until the game eventually went to a running clock.

Schettle made six three-pointers en route to a game-high 20 points while Sarah Hafemeister (16 points), Adhieu Liabwill (13 points), and Rietz (11 points) also reached double figures. Students at Gibraltar Secondary School have organized Kat’s Full Court Fight Against Lymphoma, an event supporting 2018 Gibraltar graduate and current Northern Sky Theater volunteer coordinator Kathleen Jackson.

Jackson launched a GoFundMe page more than a year ago after being diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of cancer that attacks the body’s lymph nodes.

Gibraltar seniors Giovanni Mercier, Josie Martin and Celeste Ashley have taken on the task of organizing the event, which will take place during the school’s boys basketball game against Sturgeon Bay on Feb. 17.

The trio has attended similar events in the past, including efforts to support the families of former Gibraltar student Braden Sitte. They say it has been a learning experience, but also a gratifying one.

The evening begins at 5 p.m. before the JV game and will include silent auctions, raffle baskets, a bake sale and concessions from area businesses.

Door County has been exceptionally generous at basketball-centered events this season. Before raising more than $17,000 on Monday to support Tanck, a matchup between Sevastopol and Sturgeon Bay raised more than $12,000 for the Butch and Ramirez families and collected another $2,900 for DoorCancer, a local organization that helps fund families on their own cancer journeys.

Vikings boys edge Eagles

For the second time this year, the Gibraltar boys basketball team survived a one-possession game against Southern Door late to earn a 52-51 victory.

The Vikings opened the game by scoring the first seven points and eventually built a 21-point lead behind points in the paint from Kayin Jackson and Wyatt Bultman, along with 3-pointers from Owen Dannhausen and Marco Jauregui.

The Eagles reeled in the Vikings thanks to a pair of 3-pointers from Eli Jadin and another from Ryker Lohrey. The Vikings were outscored 30-20 in the second half, but Bultman’s sixth basket in the paint during the period proved to be the difference, helping Gibraltar secure its first winning streak against the Eagles in well over a decade.

Bultman led the Vikings with 22 points, while Jauregui scored 12 and Jackson added 11, highlighted by a first-half dunk. Lohrey paced the Eagles with 12 points while Dawson Schwartz added 11 points.

Head coach Travis Ward praised his team’s defense after the win, highlighting the work of his senior guard. “Aaron Brey did a fantastic job guarding Lauden Berg (seven points), which allowed us to be more patient on the offensive end,” he said.

Vikings' offense goes cold in Peshtigo on 105.1 The GOAT

Two separate offensive droughts sent the Gibraltar Vikings boys basketball team to a 72-45 loss to Peshtigo on Friday night.

Dominik Baxter clearly remembered being limited to just five points in the teams’ last meeting, combining with Levi Hodgins for the Bulldogs’ first 16 points. The Vikings held their own early thanks to 3-pointers from Marco Jauregui, Kayin Jackson and Aaron Brey. The Bulldogs blew the game open late in the first half with a 15-0 run led by Baxter that put them ahead 40-26 at the break.

Despite some early buckets from the Bulldogs, the Vikings were able to threaten early in the second half, forcing a timeout when they trimmed the lead to nine points with just over 14 minutes left. Peshtigo would not allow another Vikings field goal the rest of the game, as the free-throw line provided a safe haven for the Bulldogs’ offense. The drought allowed the Bulldogs to extend the lead to nearly 30 points late, prompting both teams to empty their benches.

Baxter led all scorers with 28 points, 22 of which came in the first half. Hodgins added 17 points, while seven other Bulldogs scored at least two points. Brey paced the Vikings with 14 points, Jauregui added 10 and Wyatt Bultman chipped in nine.

The Vikings return to action Monday when they face Sevastopol at Institute for their Warrior Violet game. Tim Kowols will have the call beginning at 6:45 p.m., with the opening tip set for 7 p.m.
