Henry takes fourth in state 3200 meter run

Gibraltar's Evan Henry showed his distance prowess Friday morning in LaCrosse, breaking 10 minutes in the 3200 meter run to take fourth at the WIAA Division 3 State Track Meet in LaCrosse.

Adam Rzentkowski of Rosholt won the race in 9:37.40. Henry was averaging between 73-76 seconds per lap for the first seven loops, but found a burst of speed in the final 400 meters, running that 64 seconds. He will have about 24 hours to recuperate before he runs the final 1600 meters of his high school career.

As of 3 p.m. Friday, Abbigael Sitte is also still competing after qualifying in the 100 meter dash final tomorrow. The 4 x 100 meter relay team just missed out qualifying for its final.

Gibraltar prepares for state track meet

Culver's Door County Student-Athlete of the Week: Gibraltar sprinter Abbigael Sitte

A trip to LaCrosse is becoming a spring tradition for Gibraltar sprinter Abbigael Sitte. This week’s Culver’s Door County Student-Athlete of the Week qualified for three events at this year’s WIAA State Track Meet held on the campus of UW-LaCrosse, including the 4 x 100 meter relay. Nothing was a given for Sitte, who almost did not make sectional meet in the 200 meter and needed strong performances in the relay and 100 meter dash to secure her spots as well. Sitte will run the anchor for the relay team, a contrast she says to when she used to race the first leg.

The WIAA State Track Meet begins on Friday with the preliminary heats. Sitte is in the second heat of the 100 meter dash, the first heat for the 4 x 100 meter relay with teammates Bria Caldecott, Nina Sitte, Abbey Fitzgerald, Sarah Daubner, and Jade Toneys, and the first heat of the 200 meter dash.

Gibraltar takes 8th in WIAA Sectional

Gibraltar will send no one to state, but still completed a successful campaign earlier this week at the WIAA Sectional Meet in Crivitz.

Qualifying as a team, Jackson Krauss was the Vikings' top golfer, scoring a 98 on the 18-hole course.

Gibraltar wins second straight regional championship

It is a new division but it was the same result for the Gibraltar Vikings as they won their second straight WIAA Regional Championship Wednesday.

Now competing in Division 4, the Vikings clinched their sectional berth with an 11-3 victory over Crivitz.  A three-run double by Alex Laughlin started the scoring for the Vikings in the second inning. Crivitz would add a tally two innings later when Eric Hoyerman hit Dawson Andrist with the bases loaded. The Vikings would begin pouring it on in the top of the fifth when Brandon Stillman knocked in three runs with a double and Griffin Reinhardt drove in another on a single to make it 7-1. In the seventh inning, the Vikings would add on with a two RBI double by Samuel Lindenberg and a pair of runs off of balls getting passed the catcher with Laughlin at the plate. Crivitz would score twice in the bottom half of the seventh, but it was not enough to stop the Vikings. Eric Hoyerman, Luke Steebs and Samuel Lindenberg all pitched in the contest, striking out four and walking four.

The Vikings' next game will be held next Tuesday at Crivitz against Niagara at 1:30 p.m. The sectional championship would follow at 4 p.m. if they win.

Reinhardt's perfecto leads Gibraltar past NEW Lutheran

Gibraltar pitcher Trevor Reinhardt showed why he was the Packerland Conference Player of the Year Tuesday as he threw a perfect game in the Vikings' 10-0 win over NEW Lutheran.

Reinhardt did his damage on the mound over six innings of work, striking out nine in the process.

The Vikings did their heavy lifting in the third inning scoring five runs thanks to singles by Luke Steebs, Andras Szakala, and Reinhardt. The inning was capitalized by a double by Griffin Reinhardt.

Steebs, Reinhardt, Alex Laughlin, and Szakala each racked up multiple hits for Vikings' 13 hit attack.

Crivitz spoiled a potential county battle for the regional championship by beating Sevastopol, so the Vikings will head northwest for a chance at a second straight sectional berth.

Seven Gibraltar baseball players named to all conference teams

Seven Gibraltar baseball players and two softball players were named to the Packerland All-Conference teams. This included Packerland Conference Player of the Year Trevor Reinhardt being named first team as a pitcher. Andras Szakala joined him on the first team as a catcher. Brandon Stillman made second team as an outfielder. Eric Hoyerman (P), Sam Lindenberg (IF), Griffin Reinhardt (IF) and Alex Laughlin (UT/DH) were honorable mentions.

The Viking softball team ended up with two honorable mentions with Payton Pluff (IF) and Karlee Kita (UT) making it.

Trevor Reinhardt named Packerland Conference Baseball Player of the Year

Gibraltar's Trevor Reinhardt had a great season on the mound and at the plate for the Vikings.  This has earned him Packerland Conference Player of the Year. He was named to the Packerland All-Conference First Team as a pitcher and also finished second in the league in batting average at .467.

Reinhardt's Vikings will try to continue their season on Tuesday in the regional final at Green Bay NEW Lutheran.

Gibraltar baseball will play familiar foe in regional final

Gibraltar will try to get revenge on Green Bay NEW Lutheran when the two teams play for the regional championship on Tuesday. The Blazers knocked off the Vikings twice during the regular season. NEW also beat Gibraltar in the playoffs in boys basketball ending the Vikings surprising playoff run after winning the regional championship.

Gibraltar advanced to this round when Gresham had to forfeit the first round matchup. NEW clubbed St. Thomas Aquinas/Lena 28-4. The game will be played in Green Bay.

Gibraltar didn't have as good of a regular season as the 2010 team that went undefeated in conference play but they can go further in the playoffs with a win over NEW. That Viking team was led by Tom Sawyer who hit a blistering .519 that season. Alex Larsen led the team with 4 home runs and he was the correct answer to Saturday's trivia question.

Congratulations to Vicki Olson who answered the question correctly! She is the winner of a $25 certificate to the Sister Bay Mobil.

High School Sports Trivia Contest Question of the Day 5-25-19

Saturday's trivia question is, "Tom Sawyer led the 2010 Gibraltar baseball team to an undefeated conference record with a .516 batting average. Who led that Vikings team in home runs with 4?"

You can find this question in the DoorCountyDailyNews.com E-paper. If you answer correctly through the E-paper, you have an opportunity to win a $25 certificate to the Sister Bay Mobil.

The answer will be posted at 7 AM on Sunday.

Vikings qualify for six state events

Gibraltar's Evan Henry won the 1600 meter and second in the 3200-meter run to lead the Vikings with six event qualifying efforts for next weekend's state meet.

Other state qualifiers include Abbigael Sitte in the 100m and 200m dash, the 4 x 100 meter team featuring Bria Caldecott, Abbey Fitzgerald, Nina Sitte, Abbigael Sitte, Sarah Daubner and Jade Toneys, and Fitzgerald also in the long jump.

Gibraltar advances before baseball playoffs get underway

Before a single pitch is even thrown in this year's WIAA Baseball Playoffs, Gibraltar has already punched its ticket to the second round.

Officials from Gresham High Schools alerted Gibraltar athletic director Peggy Tanck earlier this week that they would be forfeiting Thursday's game. The Vikings will now keep a close eye on the NEW Lutheran/Lena-St. Thomas Academy matchup to learn where they will be playing next week.

Other WIAA playoff matchups scheduled for Thursday include Kewaunee heading to Southern Door, Sturgeon Bay hosting Algoma, Sevastopol traveling to Bowler, and Luxemburg-Casco playing at Denmark.

Henry, Sitte, and Fitzgerald lead Gibraltar's sectional qualifiers

Evan Henry, Abbey Fitzgerald, Nina Sitte, Bria Caldecott and Abbigael Sitte will be busy when Thursday's sectional meet comes around for Gibraltar.

All five will represent the Vikings in multiple events on Thursday after both teams scored in the bottom half of the regional meet held at Algoma.

Henry swept the distance events and Brady Ash qualified for the sectional meet in the high jump. On the girls side, Fitzgerald and Sitte also qualified for sectionals on the Vikings' 4 x 100 team joined by Nina Sitte and Bria Caldecott. Those two also qualified in multiple events.

The Vikings won the conference championship and made it all the way to state winning the sectional championship. They were led by Rychia Bosman who broke a number of school records.

The correct answer to Saturday's trivia question was 2010. Congratulations to Debby DeWitt who answered the question correctly! She will win a $25 certificate to the Sister Bay Mobil.

Gibraltar baseball last regular season game rained out

Gibraltar was scheduled to play their final regular season game on Saturday against Lourdes Academy. The weather wouldn't cooperate and the game was rained out. With the playoffs starting on Thursday the game will not be made up. That means the Vikings are getting ready to make a postseason run. They'll open up the regionals on Thursday when they host Gresham Community at 4:30 PM.

Luke Steebs pitches well in loss for Gibraltar

Luke Steebs only allowed two runs and struck out five in his start on the mound for Gibraltar on Friday at Kewaunee. The Vikings bats couldn't get anything going and Gibraltar fell 2-0 to the Storm.

Gibraltar will play their final regular season game of the season on Saturday when they host Lourdes Academy/Valley Christian at 11 AM.

Gibraltar softball season over after loss to Sevastopol

Gibraltar's softball season is over after falling in the opening round of the regional playoffs to Sevastopol on Thursday. The Vikings were unable to defend their home field and lost 11-1 to the Pioneers.

Playoffs about to begin with conference foe for Gibraltar

The regular season is over for Gibraltar after a 10-3 loss at Sturgeon Bay on Tuesday. It's now playoff season and the Vikings will open the postseason with a familiar foe. They'll host Sevastopol on Thursday for a 4:30 PM first pitch. The two teams split their two matchups this season each winning on the other's home field.

Gibraltar baseball can't hold big lead

After the top of the third inning Gibraltar had an 8-0 lead over Sturgeon Bay. That lead wasn't big enough as the Clippers scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat the Vikings 9-8. Abram Abeyta got the walk-off hit to complete the comeback.

Sam Lindenburg was great at the plate for Gibraltar in the game going 3-4.

The Vikings will host non-conference opponent Valders on Thursday at 4:30 PM.

Henry sweeps distance events, Sitte and Fitzgerald dominate Packerland Track Championships

With seven individual event titles, if only Gibraltar had complete teams to see where they would have ended up in the final Packerland Conference Track Championships standings.

Evan Henry continued his distance dominance in the conference, sweeping the titles in the 1600 meter (4:44) and 3200 meter (10:31) events. He also took third in the 800.

Whether you spell with an -ey or an -i, those named Abby had an amazing day for the Vikings. Abbigael Sitte won titles for the 100 and 200 meter dashes, Abbey Fitzgerald won the long and triple jump events, and the two combined to bring home a title in the 4 x 100 meter relay.

Gibraltar baseball splits two on Saturday

Gibraltar baseball went 1-1 in their two games at home on Saturday. In game one the Vikings came up just short at against Peshtigo. The final score was 7-6. Alex Laughlin hit a home run in the sixth inning to cut the lead but it was not enough for the Vikings.

In game two Gibraltar played much better and picked up a 14-4 victory over Oconto.

The Vikings will travel to Sturgeon Bay on Tuesday with the first pitch scheduled for 5 PM as Gibraltar tries to better their seed in the playoffs. Last year they won a regional championship which was their third since 2013. In that year the Vikings defeated Manitowoc Lutheran 10-4 to win the regional championship. In that game both Austin Bauldry and Matt Hecht hit home runs. Matt Hecht was the correct answer to Saturday's trivia question.

Gibraltar baseball earns split against Southern Door

Gibraltar baseball rebounded from a game one 5-2 defeat to claim the second contest by a 10-0 score over the Southern Door Eagles.

In game one, Alex Laughlin and Trevor Reinhardt each doubled while Spencer Krause and Luke Steebs collected the RBI for the Vikings, but ultimately could not recover from a tough three-run third inning. Reinhardt took the loss for the Vikings, giving up all five runs on seven hits in four innings of work.

In game two, Steebs didn't need a six run outburst in the second inning, but it clearly helped him keep a mental edge in a five inning, one hit shut out of the Eagles. Brandon Stillman and Andras Szakala collected three RBI a piece while Reinhardt drove in a pair. Dominic Krauel and Alex Laughlin also had RBI as well. The Vikings had four extra base hits and four stolen bases in the win.

Gibraltar softball schedule getting very tough

The Gibraltar softball team will certainly not have an easy go with it the rest of the season. In their final five games, all are conference games and each team is at or above the .500 mark in the Packerland. They start that schedule off with a doubleheader at Southern Door on Monday with game one scheduled for 4 PM. The Vikings will follow that up the next day at Algoma.

After that grueling schedule is over, Gibraltar will have a chance to win some games in the playoffs which the Vikings last did in 2017. In the first round of regionals, they defeated Stockbridge/Hilbert 15-5 to advance.

Stockbridge/Hilbert was the correct answer to Saturday's trivia question. Congratulations to Paul DeWitt for answering the question correctly! Paul will win a $25 certificate to the Sister Bay Mobil.

Gibraltar baseball hosts youth camp on Saturday

The Gibraltar baseball team did not have a game on Saturday but that doesn't mean they took the day off. Saturday was the Youth Baseball Camp at Gibraltar High School where the current varsity players were the instructors. This gave them an opportunity to be leaders after they all participated in the youth camp before high school. Head baseball coach Jay Kita is in his 17th season and this is the 14th year he has run the Youth Baseball Camp. Kita says it has grown tremendously since the very first one.

Kita also talked about what he has liked about his team so far this season and the players that have really stood out.

Kita added he thinks his team will play even better once the weather warms up more. Gibraltar heads to Southern Door for a doubleheader on Monday with game one scheduled to begin at 4 PM.

Gibraltar football has its coaches

Members of Gibraltar's football team should be familiar with its new head coach and assistant coach.

Back in January, the Gibraltar School Board named Mike Peck as its new head football coach. The Gibraltar Elementary School physical education team helped coach the defense last year under former head coach Jim Laughlin, who decided to not pursue the vacancy after Scott Biemeret left the position right before the 2018 season. Rejoining Peck on the staff will be Tom Sawyer, who will likely continue his operation of the offense as the assistant coach after being formally approved by the district board in March.

The Vikings went 7-4 last season, making it to the first round of the WIAA eight-man football playoffs.

Gibraltar's offense couldn't be stopped against Sevastopol

Gibraltar softball just kept on scoring in a thrilling game against Sevastopol on Tuesday. The Vikings went on the road to win 12-10 over the Pioneers. Neither pitching staff could keep the other off base much but Gibraltar was able to do it a little more.

The Vikings will host Algoma on Friday with the first pitch scheduled for 5 PM.

Gibraltar baseball knocks off Sevastopol

Gibraltar was able to come back against Sevastopol after trailing early in the ballgame. Trevor Reinhardt allowed 3 runs in the first inning but only allowed one more the rest of the way to help lead the Vikings to a 7-4 victory. Reinhardt also contributed at the plate going 2-4 with a double and 2 RBIs. Sam Lindenburg scored twice in the ballgame.

Gibraltar will host the Algoma Wolves on Friday evening with the first pitch scheduled for 5 PM.
