Gibraltar High School Archives for 2020-03

Coaches make best out of situation

With spring sports seasons postponed until further notice, it might be hard for local high school coaches to get a chuckle under the current circumstances.

Enter Gibraltar boys' basketball coach Justin Burress. Like many local coaches, Burress teaches at the school, focusing his time with sixth graders. With students having to do remote learning for the foreseeable future, teachers are connecting with students through web-based programs and with video. While it is usually one way communication, Burress decides to have a little more fun with it. Check out the video below from Gibraltar's Facebook page.

Culver's Student-Athlete of the Week: Gibraltar's Sage Krause

Even before it was canceled, one of the state’s most prolific three-point shooters would not be in Green Bay for its annual contest. Gibraltar’s Sage Krause knocked down 74 three-point shots during the 2019-2020 season, which was good for seventh in the state across all divisions. Four of those came in the Vikings’ heartbreaking regional semi-final loss against Gillett last month. Following the game, Krause said the seniors were inspiring.

Before she returns to the hardwood, the Culver’s Student Athlete of the Week will head out to the diamond to play on the softball team this spring.

Gibraltar loses regional final to Wausaukee on 105.1 WSBW

The Gibraltar Vikings came up short in its bid for a second straight regional title, losing to Wausaukee 79-70.

Both teams traded baskets in the opening minutes, but a 13-2 run by the Rangers gave the Vikings an uphill battle they would have to climb the rest of the game. The Rangers carried a 46-36 advantage into the break thanks to Tristian Pollard, Brandon Shigouri, and Hayden Renikow combining to score 29 points and causing several Viking players to be in foul trouble. Dominic Krauel scored 13 first-half points to lead the Vikings. The second half saw the Vikings get to within seven points late, but a three-point shot by Pollard followed by another two-point basket underneath put a stop to the comeback attempt. Renikow led all scorers with 23 points for the Rangers while Spencer Krause led the Vikings with 18. A tightly called the game, the Vikings had four of its five starters foul out and several others on both teams with at least three fouls.

The Vikings finish their season 7-18 and say good-bye to seniors Paul Hartmann, Brandon Stillman, Conor Duffy, and Dominic Krauel.

The Gibraltar Vikings used a 23-9 run to end the first half as a springboard to their second straight regional final as they beat the Suring Eagles 66-49 in Fish Creek.

The game was back and forth in the early going with the score tied 11-11 The Vikings clamped down on the Eagles defensively from there on out while Sam Lindenberg and Dominic Krauel carried the offense to a 34-20 halftime. Both coaches used timeouts to cut off runs by either team, but the Eagles were never able to get to within single digits. The Vikings had four players in double figures, led by Krauel's 16 points and Lindenberg's 14. Dequez Sepulveda led the Eagles with 14 points in the loss.

The Vikings will hit the road for the regional final as they head to Wausaukee for a 7 p.m. tilt. The top-seeded Rangers beat Goodman-Pembine 66-39. Tim Kowols and Bryan Mazur will have the call beginning at 6:30 p.m. on 105.1 WSBW.

Gibraltar boys basketball looks to keep streak on 105.1 WSBW

Many of the members of the Gibraltar boys basketball team were in the same spot just a few months ago as they await their matchup with Suring on Friday night in Fish Creek.

Suring was also the opponent when the Gibraltar football team was looking to advance in the WIAA Eight-man Football Playoffs. That game eventually went to the Vikings, but not before the Eagles came back to almost spoil the celebration. The difference now is that it is the Eagles, led by Jayden Geniesse, that is the lower seed and making the trip east. The Eagles earned the semifinal berth by beating St. Thomas Aquinas 61-38 on Tuesday night while the Vikings got theirs by blowing past Bowler 97-67.

Tim Kowols and Bryan Mazur will have the call beginning at 6:30 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the opening tip at 7 p.m.

Gibraltar boys looks to make tournament run on 105.1 WSBW

The Gibraltar Vikings boys basketball team looks to win its second straight regional championship when it begins Division 5 tournament play Tuesday night against Bowler.

Both teams come into the match-up with similar records, just winning a handful of games during the regular season. Zachary Fehrman and Lane Schultz are the one-two punch for the Panthers, averaging a combined 30 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists a game. The Vikings are a little more balanced offensively with Luke Steebs averaging 15 points a game and teammate Sam Lindenberg contributing 10 points a night. Head coach Justin Burress sees a lot of similarities between this team and last year's squad that won only 10 regular-season games before winning three straight in the playoffs.

FULL COACH INTERVIEW WITH JUSTIN BURRESS

Culver's Student-Athlete of the Week: Gibraltar's Dominic Krauel

It is all about doing the hard work that precedes success for Gibraltar’s Dominic Krauel. That’s why Vikings head coach Justin Burress nominated the senior for the Culver’s Student-Athlete of the Week award, who is making the most of his opportunity after playing junior varsity in past years. A solid contributor for the team’s football and baseball teams as well, Krauel is also an accomplished percussionist. His ensemble recently received a top ranking at the Solo and Ensemble Contest held earlier this month at Southern Door, securing an appearance at the state festival this spring. Krauel is hopeful his basketball team will have similar success when the playoffs begin next week.

Krauel is averaging just over seven points a game for the Vikings, which begin their playoff quest in Division 5 next Tuesday in Fish Creek against Bowler.
