Gibraltar's Fitzgerald sets state record for triple jump gold

Thanks to a state-record leap in the triple jump, Gibraltar's Abbey Fitzgerald is coming home with a silver and a gold medal.

In her first event of the day, Fitzgerald took second place in the long jump with a jump of 19-00.5 feet. Despite having only two successful jumps, she held onto the lead until Royall's Jessica Brueggeman took the top spot away with a jump of 19-08 feet. Both jumps not only would have won the state meet in 2019 but would have set the state record set by Brueggeman.

Fitzgerald returned the favor in the triple jump. After Brueggeman took the lead from Fitzgerald with a 38-07 foot jump, Fitzgerald came back with a state record leap of 39-04.25 feet. Both Fitzgerald and Brueggeman scratched on their final attempt to secure the victory for the Gibraltar senior.

Gibraltar's Fitzgerald looks for state gold

Gibraltar's Abbey Fitzgerald has a chance to bring home some major hardware from the DIvision 3 WIAA State Track Meet on Thursday.

Fitzgerald is seeded fourth in both the long jump and the triple jump entering the field on Thursday. There is potential she could win the triple jump if she recaptures her magic from regionals. Her jump of 37-5.5 beat the previous record set by Tamara Zak in 1989 by 16.5 inches. The top-seeded distance is 36-05 feet by Royall's Jessica Brueggeman.

Fitzgerald will try her hand first at long jump (17-08) when the field events open at 11 a.m. Her triple jump attempts will come 45 minutes after the boys finish their competition.
